  • Welcome to our first-time watching as we react to The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014).
The heart-pounding conclusion to "The Hobbit" trilogy was filled with action, better visuals and a monumental final battle. It is always bittersweet to finish a series off but seeing Bilbo Baggins' journey was definitely worth it.
Directed by Peter Jackson, "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" picks up where the previous films left off, plunging us into the midst of the epic conflict for control of the Lonely Mountain and its vast treasures.\
More characters from "The Lord of the Rings" make an appearance here! We got to see Galadriel, Lord Elrond, Saruman and Gandalf finally confront the darkness that has been brewing all along and it's now revealed to us it was Sauron this entire time.
We hope that you enjoy our reactions, commentary and discussions as we delve into the film's themes and how it impacted the fantasy genre. How it's connection to the incredible "Lord of the Rings" trilogy made this such an enjoyable experience and how they continue to show the pure genius and innovation of J.R.R Tolkien who singlehandedly changed the landscape of what fantasy was as a genre and what could be achieved.

TO answer one of your questions, in the books, Saruman had found a palantir when he first took residence at Isengard.. he hid it from the White COuncil, and eventually used it so much that Sauron noticed him and corrupted/cowed him.... tho in the books, unlike the movies, Saruman was trying to play both sides.. and hoping to get the Ring for himself to rule.

As to why the Dwarves had the White Gems of Lasgalen that belonged to Thranduil:
Thorins Grandfather, Thror, had heard of the Gems at some point in the Past, and that they belonged to Thranduils wife. Since the Relations between Dwarves and Elves were good at the time and one might consider them Friends, Thror offered to make Jewelry out of the Gems, befitting an Elven Queen. When asked what he wanted in exchange for this service, he wanted nothing and said this would be a Gift.
Thranduils wife never got to wear them, however, because she got killed at Gundabad. After that Thranduil went to Erebor to get the Gems of his wife, her most precious possession. Thror however changed his Mind in a complete asshole move and suddenly demanded a very, very hefty payment for the Gems.
Thranduil was understandibly furious since this wasn't what they agreed on and Thror tried to capitalize on Thranduils pain over his recently lost wife. Thror effectively robbed Thranduil and then demanded ransom.
Thranduil may seem like a coldhearted sob, but he was 100% justified, he always just wanted back what was his in the first place.

Yeah, there was a bunch of stuff they could've cut for that.
Especially when you mention that Elves basically mate for live, and they're immortal. Humans may move on and find love again (which is healthy, make no mistake), but for Elves they literally find their one soulmate and if they die, there is no new love after that, only rememberance of their lost love and grief (since when an elf dies, it is through violence), for eternity.
His wife was very fond of these Gems, so Thranduil became obsessed with them after her Death as the one thing to honor her memory, which sadly made him grow distant to his Son Legolas, who was the real thing his wife held most dear.
Thror really pulled the ultimate asshole move, worse he did it out of plain greed. At least Thorins actions can be excused due to Dragon sickness, Thror was just a greedy fella.

The fate of Balin's colony was uncertain, as no word had come from Moria in many years. The Fellowship (which included Balin's cousin, Glóin's son Gimli) later happened upon Balin's tomb in the Chamber of Mazarbul, and learnt of his fate from the Dwarves' book of records, the Book of Mazarbul. It told how Balin discovered Durin's Axe, and established a small colony, but it was overrun by orcs and Balin was killed by an orc archer in Dimrill Dale. Thus he died in the same place as his father, having been self-proclaimed Lord of Moria for less than five years. Balin's tomb was inscribed "Balin Fundinul Uzbad Khazad-Dûmu", with smaller runes beneath giving the translation into English (as the representation of Tolkien’s invented language of Westron): "Balin, son of Fundin, Lord of Moria"."

It is also thought to have magical properties and fire powers, as when fighting Durin's Bane, Gandalf claimed to wield the Flame of Anor.

Thranduil is such a misunderstood character, especially in the movie. To be honest, the Dwarves did trespassed in the Mirkwood, Thranduil did his best to protect his people especially after the battles he faced. It was during the War of Wrath that winged dragons first and unexpectedly poured out of Thangorodrim to devastate the besiegers at Angband (Morgoth's fortress in the north). Thranduil would have only been about 35 years old when the greatest of these winged dragons (Ancalagon the Black) began his reign of terror. The dragon horde of Morgoth was unbeatable. In fact, it took the Valar themselves, sending the host of the Valar (including the Vanyar, Famari), joined by many Maiar and a mighty host of eagles, to defeat the dragons and seal Morgoth away.(undoubtedly the most monumental battle in the history of Arda) but the damage done was catastrophic, and the powers used during the conflict altered the face of the land, and eventually buried most of Beleriand under water.
While we don’t have a record of Thranduil actually being defaced by dragon fire, the War of Wrath lasts over four decades while Thranduil was still a young prince living in Doriath, so it's possible he could have faced many dragons during this time.
It is at least an appropriate cinematic reference to his actual history and perhaps gives a glimpse into why he became so damaged (emotionally as well as physically)
Thranduil does make another appearance during the Last Alliance, where two-thirds of his father’s forces (including Oropher, Thranduil’s father) are killed. He rallied his forces and helped defeat Sauron… but in the end leads back a broken army to the Green Wood. He resolves to isolate himself from the affairs of the world…
And maybe after facing all this horror… so would I.
Not to mention his wife was captured and taken to Angmar by orcs during the Angmar war. She died at Gundabad that’s why there’s no grave for her for them to grieve that’s why Thranduil was strict, he receded from the world, caring strongly to protect and preserve his realm, his family and his people.
In the book, Thranduil was actually reluctant to start a war over gold, it was only then when the Dain arrived the next day BEFORE the trade had been made for the Arkenstone, the Dwarves proceeded to attack.
(Also, There’s NO Tauriel in the books)
When Thorin died, Thranduil laid Orcrist on Thorin's tomb, where it was said to glow in warning when enemies approached.
Thranduil was most definitely a very powerful king. He ruled over the largest population of elves in Middle Earth and was considered their greatest king and mightiest warrior. Although he ruled Silvan elves, he himself, was a Sinda, who had lived in Doriath during the First Age. After the destruction of Doriath, he migrated with his father, Oropher, to Greenwood the Great where the Silvan elves made Oropher king. Thranduil became king after his father was killed in battle. Thranduil had no ring of power, so in that respect, he could be considered less powerful than Galadriel, Elrond or Cirdan, who had the aid of those rings. Thranduil was a superb strategist and very wise, making treaties and alliances which benefited his kingdom and those of his elven kin as well as men. He also possessed strong magical powers, as evidenced by his “magic doors” which no enemy could penetrate and the enchanted river which protected his realm. Furthermore, Tolkien states in Unfinished Tales in the Chapter “Of The Sindar” that those from Doriath were the fairest, wisest and most skilled of all the elves in Middle Earth and the closest to the Calaquendi, those elves of Aman (the Blessed Realm) because they lived under the influence of Melian, the Maia. Thranduil also was instrumental in the defeat of Sauron, defeating his forces when they attacked Mirkwood and tying up Sauron’s resources in the North, helping to ensure his ultimate defeat. Since Thranduil accomplished all of this without a ring of power, using only his wisdom to strategize and his abilities to build alliances, one could consider him more powerful than the others when viewed simply on his own merits.
(I’m sorry I know I’ve been redundant about him being King after his father died because I cannot stress enough that he became king at a young age in even in Elven standards and it was literally after the battle where his father died, Thranduil going home with only two thirds of his people who survived, including him.)

    • @DesiBorcheva

Wow I'm impressed and amazed. Thranduil is my favorite character and I didn't know much about his early life. We have to accept the fact that to be a good king you have to take care of your people first. Everyone talks about how he didn't help Thorin with Smaug, I think he just knew they wouldn't defeat the dragon and he would just waste his people's lives. In the last film, however, we can see how he, although he does not like dwarves, helps in the battle, again sacrificing the lives of his people. All this he does because of the white gems that were taken from him. This is the last memory of his wife, if we don't count Legolas, as Gandalf said. Regarding Saruman's 'switch': he became "proud and impatient and enamoured of power" (Unfinished Tales) => "Sauron, through lies and sheer force of will, made the White Wizard his vassal" (WETA statues), thus "Saruman fell under the domination of Sauron and desired his victory or no longer opposed it" (Unfinished Tales) In the years up to the War of the Ring "Saruman was mustering [at Isengard] a great force for the service of his new master" (The Treason of Isengard) but "even as he did his new master’s bidding, the corrupted Wizard plotted a second betrayal" (WETA statues) - if he could have wielded the Ring's power he would have tried to take Sauron's crown for himself. Basically, Saruman was brought low by his pride and greed - he lusted for dominion and he saw two ways to achieve it: be Sauron's right-hand, or usurp Sauron's place as Lord of the Rings and Middle-earth. He was a true traitor: he had betrayed Free Folk and would have betrayed his new master given the chance. Ultimately though, he was "little more than the Dark Lord's puppet, acting out his will" (TLotR: Weapons and Warfare). Sorry for the long answer - liked your reactions to the MIDDLE-EARTH series!!

This was the final sendoff of Christopher Lee. He said he portrayed it as this being the moment where Saruman finally decided that the side of good was weak and the only way to survive was to join with Sauron.
"Why do the dwarves have it?" Most likely, Thror(Thorins grandfather)stole them. A deleted scene reveals that the gems were the last heirloom of his wife, who died in Angmar, which is why he's so desperate to get them back, even willing to go to war to retrieve them. I believe this scene should have been included, but you can find it unfinished on youtube.
33:50 Gloin wears the helmet that his son Gimli one day wears.
Love the twirlie whirlies. The elves great accuracy made obsolete.
One of the things I think is an amazing piece of storytelling is that Legolas took Orcrist from Thorin because it was an elvish heirloom. However, he was unskilled at using it and, while he managed to take out a few weak orcs with it, he was totally outmatched by a skilled warrior like Bolg. However, when he finally gives it to Thorin and goes back to his daggers, he easily ends Bolg.
Some people question why Thorin moved the sword and let Azog stab him. However, it was clear that Azog's strength would have lead to him overpowering Thorin either way. Thorin knew it and he did the only thing he could to kill the Defiler once and for all.

The main problem with these movies is that they're full of stuff that isn't in the book. Azog, Tauriel and Legolas and the love triangle, etc. Coupled with the over-reliance on CGI instead of practical effects and the noticeably more video-game/cartoon-like action sequences, it all results in a markedly different experience from the original trilogy even if we ignore that both stories have a very different tone anyway. I think the cast did an awesome job and it's the main strength of this trilogy, but the story and pacing doesn't really work because too much stuff was added without being sufficiently developed for the audience to genuinely care.
Way too often it feels like the logic tends to be, "You liked Legolas surfing on a shield while he shoots orcs with his bow? Well, here's Legolas hanging upside down from a bat beheading a dozen orcs? You liked Aragorn and Arwen trying to heal Frodo after he was stabbed by the Witch King? Here's Tauriel trying to heal Kili the exact same way after he was shot by a magic arrow that had the exact same powers as the Witch King's dagger, except it was carried by a random orc for some reason." I don't hate them, but man, they're such a step down from the Lord of the Rings.

(Also dislike the forced love triangle because I'm pretty sure Tauriel's actress said she would do the film if there wasn't a love triangle...and then they gave her a love triangle-) That's probably why it kind of fell flat too, since so many characters were created from nothing and then were just kind of....there.
....I did keep thinking while watching this that it would make such a cool game tho. Like if I had to fight out some of those sequences on my own. But that would also change things since then I think I'd be more ok with filler/outlandish/drawn out fight sequences since in a game, I would expect more combat from a gameplay perspective.

Men are the secondborn. Dwarvish forefathers were created by the hands of one of the Valar named Aulë,
then essentially Eru Îlluvatar(AllFather) breathed life into them to later wake up at a later point in a future era since Aulë was still excited to create things of his very own. It’s also why dwarves overall can resist the rings power and so forth.
There were these beings became known as Petty Dwarves in the books where these beings were super hostile and the elves thought it was just another spawn of Melkor (now Morgoth) so when they finally did see actual dwarves they killed them on site.
Back then they thought these “petty dwarves” as we call them to be other machinations of Morgoth seeing as how he and Mairon>Gorthaur>Sauron have been terrorizing the land and permeating shadows living nightmares throughout the land for thousands of years….
That and dwarves were keen on chopping down trees by huge amounts so you can kind of see why… but this was only the beginning.
But it’s not a very good start. Buuut not all dwarvish clans share this rift as the creator of the 16 rings was an elf named Celebrimbor and is one of the best characters ever. His main smithery guild in Eregion was full of dwarves and elves called the “Gwaith Ír Mirdain”. Even Gimli’s father was really close to a certain elf I won’t name yet! ❤
Not all dwarves were enemies to elves. Galadriel and her brother were best friends with dwarves. Famously the fortress of Nargothrond was built by Finrod Felagund with the dwarves! It was only a certain clan that killed Elu Thingol! (Elwë)
Galadriel & her elder brother Finrod Felagund were best friends with the dwarves. Finrod was named Felagund by the dwarves meaning “Earth Hewer” from the fact he helped them build the great fortress called Nargothrond of which he was the elven lord that ruled there justly. Was the same for Celebrimbor and the dwarves of Eregion especially the guild called Gwaith Í Mirdain.
His bestie was Narvi the dwarf. Narvi and Celebrimbor created the doors of Moria. Moria is also the elvish name for Khazad Dûm. Moria was by other elves who might have snuck in a tiny insult because Moria means black pit. However Celebrimbor and Galadriel both call it what the dwarves call it; which is Khazad Dûm!
This gift for Gimli set it into imperishable Crystal and would be the only thing left in middle earth that holds the light of the two trees of Valinor (Valanor by the Eldar). It’s basically the uncursed version of the Nauglamir. He named it The Galadramir. ❤
     If you search for
'victorian hair art' then you can see what amazing things people created with hair in the past. Craftsmen as dwarfs were, I imagine that Gimli must have created something beyond exquisite!
    -
Gimli attacking the ring shows it has no hold over him just like the Dwarvish rings out of the 16 meant to go to the elves had no hold over them. So technically they could easily be used offensively and defensively but many disappeared over the ages mainly due to Sauron collecting them back again over the last few thousand years. One or two eaten by dragons (not simple minded beasts here. They were twisted and enhanced beings by Melkor/Morgoth(Saurons Upperclassman as far as the Ainur face goes.).
There were only a few of them and their offspring are lesser drakes throughout middle earth. Most recent one you’ll see in The Hobbit movie and one other most recent dragon left of the originally created dragons was Scatha, of which I don’t think Scatha even has wings or could fly in any permanent sort of way.
“Evil cannot create. Only twist and warp what is already natural to the world”

It is established that elves may only die by violence or a broken heart. I think it is a missed opportunity not to have Tauriel die from sorrow. I think that would have been a poignant and powerful way to bookend her character arc and perhaps lend some context for how Legolas behaves toward Gimli in Fellowship of the Ring.

When we finally see Dwalin, the gruffest and least sympathetic dwarf come to tears in front of Thorin, it's a hard moment.
Edit: Love how they end the film with the map, sitting exactly where it was when Gandalf enters, sees it, and picks it up in the beginning of Rings. While the 2nd film is the strongest, I have become quite attached to the first as we are introduced to the Dwarves and the journey's beginning. Concerning Erebor's value to the Orcs - Purely strategic. Only a Dragon was able to root the dwarves from it and if the Orcs were able to gain control - same thing. They would have a completely defendable stronghold from which to exert power and occupy surrounding lands.

In the Hobbit book, most of the dwarves of the party were not given any development or personalities. Jackson and his team had to create them for the films and I think with the time allotted they did a fine job. Remember, the Hobbit films had more than twice the number of characters to give screen time to compared to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. So no doubt much harder to give time too. Also worth noting is that the actor who played Fili originally had to be replaced, so that may have played a part in some limits in his character development.

The three Elven Rings created by Master Elven Smith Celebrimbor and these was crafted in secret so they are not corrupted by Sauron like the other rings ( the ones to men and dwarves). However the three elven rings are somehow still bound to it because Celebrimbor did create the three rings using the knowledge that Sauron ( disguised as Annatar) taught Him. Sometimes I wish Peter Jackson could make another stand alone movies during the period of war of the ring, we know in LoTR during the Return of the King, the combined forces of men of Gondor and Rohan fought Sauron's armies from Mordor in Pelennor fields but do you know that, in the northern part of Middle Earth another battles took place as well. like the Battle of Dale and Battle of Dol Guldur.
WIth Battle of Dale, we could see once again a much older King of Erebor , Dain Ironfoot ( Thorin's cousin) together with King Brand and men of dale, who is the grand son of Bard the Bowmen ( the guy who slain dragon smaug), it would be great to see the battle, of them defending their homeland as Sauron forces also sent a huge host of Easterlings to attack the north. The battle lasted for days, and King Brand and Dain Ironfoot fought valiantly though they died at the end, and they were almost lost but then the news of the victory from the south came in, where Gondor and Rohan were able to defeat the Mordor armies, that news really caused the easterlings to lose morale and this has made a morale boost for the dwarves and men to push back the enemies off their land
With Battle of Dol Guldur, we could see also again a combined forces of Elves of Lothlorien led by Galadriel and Celeborn together with the Sylvan Elves from the Woodland realm of Mirkwood led by King Thranduil where they attack and defeated Sauron's remaining forces there.
This is also the reason why when we watch LoTR Return of The King (extended version) there is line if i am not mistaken spoken by Legolas to Gimli where he said the dwarves are not coming as they are defending their own land.
In the book it's also said:
"Yes, you have it,’ said Gimli. "The Lady of the Wood! She read many hearts and desires. Now why did not we wish for some of our own kinsfolk, Legolas?" Legolas stood before the gate and turned his bright eyes the passing of the grey company away north and east, and his fair face was troubled. "I do not think that any would come," he answered. "They have no need to ride to war; war already marches on their own lands."
Thats my wish lol, though I don't know if these will ever happen in my life time, it would be nice though, to see on big screen and to see some of the same actors/characters return back to these films.

This was a tough story to turn into a film trilogy, because it was simply a children's book. They created lots of characters and situations that needed fleshing out that weren't really even in the story in the first place. The earlier animated version for TV adapted the whole book (albeit a bit more rushed) in 90 minutes.
In the book, the dwarves are not hunted by "Azog", but are simply going from misadventure to misadventure. Gandalf himself doesn't even take too much of this seriously, and simply disappears from time to time because he's not really part of the quest. He only shows up every so often to check up on their progress. As Ian McKellan/Gandalf said to Frodo in Fellowship of the Rings, he was barely involved, and only gave Bilbo a nudge out the door.
Some of the high points were part of the book: the wild party at Bag End, the three trolls turned to stone, Elrond reading the map, and riddles in the dark with Gollum. Some simple events were cranked up, like the barrel ride: in the book, Bilbo arranges the escape, but there was no chase or battle. Many LOTR characters that returned (particularly Legolas) were simply added fan service.
Even though it was a children's book, Tolkien made clear that war costs lives. It wasn't so much about the loss of this or that particular dwarf, but the fact that many of Bilbo's friends died. It was this loss that prompted Thorin to speak his final words to Bilbo.

All of the Tolkien books had very short action sequences, and many of the sequences in the movies didn't even happen in the books and when they did they were exaggerated in the films. Of course in fantasy movies you expect action sequences, so it's understandable they were included. However, in doing so, they diluted a lot of the plot and character development, especially in the Hobbit where the source material was only one short book, even if you add the LotR appendices that included information about stuff such as what happened at Dol Guldur. The books sort of treat the action as if it were summarized rather than being shown in detail, and that was intentional as Tolkien having been in war himself didn't want to glorify war. It was more the resolve to stand against evil even in the face of certain death, not the glory of battle or the seeking of vengeance that he wanted to show, in which battle is merely a necessity. To quote Tolkien, “I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.”
