Why do we even need to use dan and toen in those cases? Are those words like optional ones?

The words dan and toen (then) are use to refer back to a previously mentioned time, so that you don't have to repeat the time, like in the example: Friday. Hope that helps. :)

Dankuwel. Ik heb een vrage. if we started the sentence with toen , shouldn't the inversion be in Imperfectum tense ??

Bedankt voor je vraag! We do not always use imperfectum with toen.
Imperfectum:
Toen ik klein was, zwom ik altijd in de rivier.
When I was little, I always USED TO SWIM in the river.
(habit in the past = imperfectum)
Perfectum:
Ik heb eerst gegeten en toen heb ik gezwommen.
First I ate and then I went for a swim.
(one time action = perfectum)
