And, the mayor should never allow them to camp on the sidewalks where taxpayers and their families walk and get around. It's utterly ridiculous that they allow this, it must be awful for the people who live and work there where the tents are.
We never had homeless until the 80's then boom Reagan threw the mentally ill out on the street. Suddenly downtown was lined with beggars & ppl sleeping on cardboard in doorways Downtown became almost a dead zone.
Lived there over 20 years ago. There's always been homeless in that area. There used to be SROs, residential hotels and other low income rental units down there around Market street. As soon as plans for Petco Park were announced all those low rent properties were sold to developers who either tore them down or renovated them into unaffordable, luxury apartments. Volunteer Services of America and other homeless rescue missions used to be over there. Citizens told officials 20 years ago this was going to be a problem. You can't just do away with low income properties and homeless services without replacing those things and expect everything to be ok. But San Diego was so enthralled with the idea of a baseball park downtown near the water they didn't give a sh*t.
Well, some of us voted against it but the "leaders" of our finest city were flat set on gifting a billionaire with a free ballpark and lots of surrounding real estate to boot. Biggest giveaway since NTC was sold for a buck to a major developer. The Chargers tried the same scam after that but it wasn't going to work twice in the same 30 years so they took their ball and left : ).
I know for a fact that most of these homeless were imported by rehab facilities that get paid by the State. When the 30 days are up they are discharged locally.

Why are they allowed to camp out on the sidewalk? I prefer law and order and safety. Our Republican mayor and governor do not allow homeless people to camp out on the sidewalks where people walk to shops with their families. They have never allowed it. No way. The homeless campers have plenty of rescue shelters but for those that won't stay at the shelters they have to stay clear of businesses, parks and walkways.
Same, you'll never see tents in front of businesses here. Gotta nip it in the bud! We have homeless but they're in the woods or camp red out in a van & certainly not in my neighborhood.
I been attacked 3 times living in East Village in the past 5 years. The last one I got hit from behind by a crazy person and was rushed to the ER in an ambulance. The cops did nothing, they issued a citation to the crazy person that attacked me from behind and the City Attorney refused to press charges. I called them for a year and they finally returned my call a day after the one year statute of limitations to file charges ended asking me how they could help me. Absolutely ridiculous! Two weeks ago I went to the post office and a crazy man comes rushing out of a camping tent chasing me with a crack pipe and a gas torch in his hand, I literally ran to the middle of the street as cops were passing by and I flagged them down, the cops waved at me, laughed, saw what was happening and kept driving. I called SDPD to report them and when they found out why I was calling they put me on hold for 2 hours on the phone and then hung up. That's SDPD for you. But you will see them taking naps while on duty around the community college and other quiet areas. Why are we paying their salaries for? BTW All three times I was attacked was in plain daylight going to the grocery store. I carry a high powered pepper spray gun concealed in a bag now every time I walk out the door, its simply not safe!
Make sure to vote blue again. You put them in office fully knowing what they stand for and it's not for the people that pay their bank rolls. Yep vote Blue. What's really funny is the high powered pepper spray. I am sure you think guns need to be out lawed and there's NO WAY you can use your right to bear arms in the Blue for You state. Enjoy, enjoy and enjoy some more. Maybe get a bigger can spray that will show them. It truly is sad to see things like this. Keep them Blues rolling in the bank roll, they really love you and want the best for Illegals, sorry for You.
You're asking why we're paying the cops' salaries? The bigger question is why the hell did you choose East Village to live in when you knew that it was surrounded by this human cesspool? Crime and homelessness were there long before the past 5 years.

her question was what needs to be done? and blaming someone who isn't doing something is not an answer. Dealing with homelessness is not an easy task. You can move them but they are homeless, they will travel to wherever they want. You can offer them assistance, what happens if they refuse help? You can offer them housing, how long can that last? You can offer them rehab for drug addiction, that is an on going issue which requires them to be have self control over their addiction. And for someone who is down of their luck, no job. That is not as easy task. Sure, of course the typical thing to do is blame the person in charge, but solutions have been tried and even they are running out of options.
Please all of the news stations please talk about this because; I witness the homeless people and what I'm going to tell you is completely thoroughly true; I witness the homeless people using their dogs as a punching bag and so much worse, I promise you this is happening constantly..... Please please bring this to the Publics attention because if you do some of the brave people will "speak up" towards what these guys are doing And then maybe things will get better
I’m tired of people saying the answer is more law enforcement. The city just received millions of dollars of law enforcement monies from the federal government. There are professionals who are equipped to help the people who can’t care for themselves and it’s not law enforcement.
I used to own a condo downtown SD but sold in 2012. There’s NO WAY I’d buy downtown again. A few years from now they’ll be lucky to get pennies on the dollars for downtown properties.
Most neighborhoods are in major decline as well. Real Estate isn't practical if there's no stable place to put it. And there really isn't. Liquor stores create ghettos and they are almost everywhere now. Right along with plenty of new crack pipe shops.
Americans get organized put a stop to this chaos that's happening To this country. Protest don't show up to work don't pay your mortgage or rent. Stop paying your property tax Take one day of the week and don't put gas in your car. Second day of the week drive with your headlights on. And we will win this battle the battle of evil.
He'll badly harm or kill someone soon. Then, they will say why didn't you (the victims) ask him how you could help. If you he is killed or injured when someone is trying to protect themselves, they will find room in the jail for them.
If you all think this is bad wait until the future brings this 100 times worse. I'm from LA we experienced this years ago and now look at LA. Instead of paying more police and other government based enforcement groups you need to support organizations like PATHS. And start putting shelters closer to the beaches. I've seen where the shortcomings are and I'm willing to help before it's to late. Please comment here if you want to help. The problem effects us all. SO ONLY WE CAN FIX IT.Theres power in unity.

They should house, rival gangs together and let natural selection take place in solving the problem.
It’s tragic to see the residents of San Diego get exactly what they voted for.
These ppl have always been out there really . Gloria needs to boss up .
This is very sad.
her question was what needs to be done? and blaming someone who isn't doing something is not an answer. Sure, of course the typical thing to do is blame the person in charge, but solutions have been tried and even they are running out of options.
the rents too damn high
San Diego should now be called LA south.
Hopefully a vigilante will take care of the pest.
🤣🤣 I love it! Keep voting for trash!!!
But you gotta admit, the weather is AMAZING!!!! 🤣🤣
I don't think they are connecting the dots
I'd be homeless too if I stayed in a city I couldn't afford to live in.
Quick bus them homeless folks to Carmel!!!
You had a chance to take the left out of power and vote for sanity 😮
In lowa we have laws against pitching tents where u please and people sleeping on side walks
He'll badly harm or kill someone soon. Then, they will say why didn't you (the victims) ask him how you could help. If you he is killed or injured when someone is trying to protect themselves, they will find room in the jail for them.
we were in Singapore last month - they don't have this problem...Hm....What can we glean from them?
They don't have Democrats in Singapore
You voted for this, and now you're getting it good and hard.
Those tents look like a fire hazard to me...
The local cemetery has not yet reached max capacity!
I left in 78 when they ate my dog, and my neighbor's dog, and his neighbor's dog. Then cleared out dog pound. Then I got a black dog.
Dump career politicians.
The taxpayers scared !? But gang members are getting free hotels!! MAKES PERFECT SENSE TO ME.
I avoid downtown as much as possible. It is disgusting there. Remove Gloria out of office. He is unfit to be mayor of “America’s Finest City.”
They are inside warm homes.Homeless are outside 24/7.
You voted it in!
Distress of nations with perplexity on full display.
Voting matters. If you didn't vote... well this is what you wanted.
I d be LIVID!!! To put these people right in front of homes paying 1000s of $ for rent..!!! Unreal
What large city in America doesn't have a homeless problem? I can't think of any.
I wouldn’t feel safe with a “man” bun anywhere
Lock them away in institutions and keep them sedated 24/7. I’ll gladly pay more in taxes to house them far away. Plus they’ll be safer too.
Politicians wont and can't help
If you all think this is bad wait until the future brings this 100 times worse. I'm from LA we experienced this years ago and now look at LA. Instead of paying more police and other government based enforcement groups you need to support organizations like PATHS. And start putting shelters closer to the beaches. I've seen where the shortcomings are and I'm willing to help before it's to late. Please comment here if you want to help. The problem effects us all. SO ONLY WE CAN FIX IT.Theres power in unity.
