3 still alive. Frank and Joe still perform with Frank's brother as Danny and the Juniors. Dave joins in occasionally. Just saw their show. They can still rock at 72.
LET US NOT FORGET THE WONDERFUL ARTIE SINGER WHO ALSO WROTE AT THE HOP AND ROCK AND ROLL IS HERE TO STAY. AN ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL MUSICIAN AND HUMAN BEING.
This was written by Dave White and John Madara, who were songwriter/producers based in Philadelphia - White was a member of Danny and the Juniors. Madara explained in an interview : "'At The Hop' originally was recorded by myself, with Danny and The Juniors (who at the time were called The Juvenairs) singing background. It was titled 'Do The Bop,' with the B Side, 'Sometimes,' also with me singing lead and Danny and The Juniors singing background
@AkiroXKE Absolutely true - just prior to its release in '57 (when D&J were still the Juvenairs) it was originally called "Do the Bop". When Dick Clark heard it, he suggested changing the name to "At the Hop", which is how they performed it (as Danny & the Juniors) on American Bandstand. The rest is Rock & Roll history.
As of 6/26/2023 Frank Maffei is the sole survivor of Danny & the Juniors. He is also the only member who is still alive. He earned this status when the others died, and he has not. He is expected to die in the future, but that date has yet to be decided.
@AkiroXKE Clark admits to this day he blew that one, since he thought being from opera, the song wouldn't jive with the Rock & Roll crowd. Since it earned Darin a Grammy for Best New Artist and Record of the Year for Mack the Knife, it definitely wasn't one of Clark's better calls. Still, his hits are a lot more than his misses.
Dick Clark also told Connie Francis not to release MAMA it would ruin her career and will not be a hit, but he was wrong . The song went top ten and earn her a million seller GOLD record.
The Juniors are the ones harmonizing in the background. You still can here Danny Rapp doing the “oh baby” part. I wonder what the whole song would sound like with Danny on lead.
While I agree that this is really good but, they did much better job with a slight change to the lyrics and, even better with music when to they did At The Hop. Perhaps they changed some and added more instruments. While I'm no expert on musical instruments I think, I can hear different ones on the two versions.
First song I ever remember dancing with a boy to in the fifth grade at a sock hop, 1958-59 school year.

I love both songs, both this one and the other (At The Hop) which was released to the masses and became number 1.
Thanks for posting this rare version of the song.

It's more original from 'at the hop' version.
the truth i think
what year was this released
1957
This is not Danny Rapp ! It's Johnny Madera
