This wonderful man came to my high school to direct our choir, too. It was an experience I have never forgotten, even now at age 80. What a gift!

He came to our town to direct our choir when I was a teenager. It was life changing. We did this arrangement!

I had the privilege of being in a choir in high school directed by Jester Hairston. He wasn’t the regular conductor but my teacher would invite him every year. He was a fascinating man to work under and had a million interesting stories. I am so proud to have met and conversed with Rollie. R. I.P.

Jester Hairston came to our town and directed massed choirs from the local schools. He introduced many of us to the Spirituals.

I sang with Jester. I can still hear him say, "Why do y'all sing like white people.

some of those sopranos are rly struggling with that high g in "Satan is a liar and a conjur too"
I find it funny that I can't find any children's choir doing this arrangement, especially ones with both changed and unchanged voices which are perfect to hit those high soprano notes, and those lower bass notes. Our middle school choir is doing this arrangement for festival, which is where we go sing to judges and they rate us out of 120. last year we got 114 and the year before that 116 and a couple years back we got 120. I just love this arrangement and it's one of my favorite spirituals.

I got to sing this in high school many moons ago. As a baritone and the loudest guy, it was rough projecting those bass notes lol. I was soooooooo happy on the "we're gonna shout, SHOOUT" part. But this was by far my favorite song in our repertoire.

Alayna Boucher lots of more spiritual songs use high male voices containing mature men so that’s probably why there aren’t many little kids doing this arrangement

@@bfan82 I liked your many moons ago comment. Once upon a time I used to sing in several choirs. I consider myself a baritone but I filled in missing voices as tenor or bass. my range starts at Re / D of basso profondo... many members placed as Bass don't reach lower notes of the "simple" bass range but in two years I found 5 who managed to sing at the octave below the basso profondo and bass. There was real body trembling singing with bass sections like that. Ciao from Rome, Italy (from a dude who has been singing Spiritual and Gospel for over 50 years)

I like this, but they all need to break out of their shells & let the Holy Ghost flow!

dang yall need to stop the rudeness over here. it's a spiritual. it's supposed to be flowing with "Holy Ghost" whatever that means. it's supposed to show a message from biblical times or the bible or whatever. I do understand that its art, but you need to appreciate where the art came from. this particular piece came from times of slavery. slaves would sing these types of songs to help them get through the day. some of them even had secret meanings like wade in the water.
