i really feel that sweet trip created a brief portal into the future of music. I dont know if anyone here knows about mark fisher and his 'slow cancellation of the future' theory, in that all modern music is just rehashed music from the 20th century and that its impossible to imagine a new style or 'signature sound' , I really think that they subverted it with this song in particular.
I agree. I love Mark Fisher's philosophy, however I've always felt a little resistance to his arguments that seem to imply music seemed to stop evolving or something past the millennium. Sweet Trip is great example of music that took the frenetic and experimental electronic music of the 90's and evolved it further. There's a lot of really great experimental electronic music these days being made that draw from that same source material of jungle and DnB, but extrapolate it into a 21st century context. Hyperpop is also another good example of a genre that could not have existed last century, and it even has gained some considerable mainstream popularity. I think the increasing popularity of his writings and breakbeats in electronic music is no coincidence.
This is a pretty old camera recording, and the sound still sounds clear and balanced. I’m guessing they were at a moderate enough volume at this gig, otherwise the sound would be super distorted. Playing at “hearing damage” volumes like MBV did isn’t always ideal
