That argument makes no sense whatsoever. In a popular vote scenario the winning candidate would still need the majority, not the plurality, of votes to win, even in the event of runoff elections. 82% of the country lives OUTSIDE of those two states, so candidates would literally be WAY better off campaigning only in the other 48 states and not those ones, than campaigning in only those two states.

Jesus Christ Jimmy we are not a democracy we have always been a constitutional republic!
the constitutional republic went down the crapper when representatives started debating if their job was to uphold and enforce the constitution, OR create policy based on their constituents social/ideological demands, which started in the 1790s if i'm not mistaken.
@mina_loi democracy = mob rule, also means you don't have rights, because the majority would get rid of the rights at any given moment, the constitution was ratified in 1792, democracy was never mentioned in the founding at all, Jimmy is right the republic was lost 1911, and with that they also installing the ground work to disarm America
If you got rid of the electoral college voting system and went with populism then the population centres of California , new York and Washington would always win. None of the other states have anywhere near enough people to vote and make a difference.
The word Democracy never appears in the constitution . Your a constitutional Republic with 4 year representative elections , the problem is the representation is not for the people
I’m Under the impression the founding fathers viewed democracy as tyranny over the individual by the masses. Also add that they may have phrased “God” with the same idea as Spinoza and Einstein. Prob half true
The word Republic is not in the Constitution either. The phrase "A Republican form of Government" is mentioned one time. A quick litmus for Democracy, do you vote? If the answer is yes Democracy is part of your system of Governance. We are not a Direct Democracy, a Representative Democracy would be a better way of saying it. Democracy is very much a part of our system.

The problem is the federal took over the role of the states. The federal government is supposed to be next to useless.
Totally lost me with the "end the electoral college" BS. Just when I think Jimmy's finally woken up, he blindsides me with that kind of stupidity. What Jimmy doesn't seem to understand is that we aren't one gigantic, monolithic country - we are a collection of 50 individual states that have agreed to unite - but not to the extent that each one loses all sovereignty. Individual states having different electoral weights is, at the end of the day, a check on federal power. But to Jimmy's argument that "if you want to win with the popular vote, then win over the people of New York and LA!" - okay, whatever, but then what's the point of having individually recognized states at all if they're under the thumb of a monolithic government? Furthermore, there really would be no reason at all for politicians to make the effort of visiting anywhere between NY and CA - why would they, when NYC and LA can decide everything? And how is that solving the problem of some states being so deep blue or deep red, that voters in those states may feel like their vote doesn't count? If anything, by abolishing the electoral college, you're taking that problem and making it 10x worse. What tripe! Jimmy, you're lucky I wasn't in the audience that night, because you definitely would've gotten a huge boo 😂
Yes, strange isn't it. I agree with most things Jimmy talks about, but then he suddenly re-grows his TYT head and stops me in my tracks. Personally, I can't watch the segments on Israel/Gaza. He and the team have such an incredibly biased view of Israel that it borders on strong anti-semitism. I'm not a Jew but I READ history and know that the current portrayal of Israel as a murderous, genocidal state is a mirror image of the truth. They joked about Kristallnacht the other day and it was clear that Jimmy didn't know what that was. It didn't stop him from mocking a Jew referring to it as a warning (the breaking of shop windows of Jewish businesses is happening again in NYC). Long live the Constitutional Republic and the Electoral College. 👍🇺🇸🇬🇧

In Canada we dont have an electoral college so our gov’t is decided by Ontario and Quebec…2 out of 10 provinces and 3 territories decide every election. Both those provinces have a combined 199 out of 338 seats….people vote regionally on the Federal level instead of whats best for the Nation which is why the electoral way is far superior.

ITS A CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC.. STOP CALLING IT A DEMOCRACY.... PLEASE LEARN THE DIFFERENCE
No! You learn the meaning of the word “republic”! A “republic” is a democratic form of government. A representative democracy. With or without a constitution. Thats what the word means. I’m so tired of people saying “the USA is a republic, not a democracy”. All republics are representative democracies! But the USA has always been a very limited democracy, a democracy limited to rich people. The purpose of the Constitution was to limit popular democracy and ensure that the rich would rule the country,

Jimmy, a pure democracy does not work because ultimately it becomes 2 wolves and a sheep, arguing over what's for dinner. A pure popular vote would subject us to mob rule and today, the President would be elected by those living in the big coastal cities with people in the other States having less representation. The good thing about the Electoral College is that the swing states change over time, as demographics shift, and economic opportunities change. It forces a person seeking the highest office to campaign in places like Wisconsin and Michigan, where they wouldn't need to in a pure popular vote. Please reconsider your position on this...........
In other words actually democracy does not work, we have to have oligarchy pretending to be democracy. We have mob rule now, only we are not in the mob

I agree 100%. I think if people my age (25) and younger begin to understand this, that would be chaos for the two-party charade in DC. I'm suspecting Jimmy might be going through a story arc where he might realize why democracy is truly evil and is thrown around as a buzzword. I've realized there's a reason the founding fathers granted every state in this union a Republican from of government. The idea is the individual represents their own minority and their rights aren't to be subjected to the will of the everchanging majority by a popular vote. It's wild because the founding fathers historically would be considered left-leaning for smaller government, no police state, no central bank, etc. and so would I, but as of today, we're considered on the right. It's very ironic.

Jimmy we’re a representative republic not a democracy. You need to learn why we have an electoral college. If we elected a president based on the number of votes only the states/cities that are very populated would be electing the. President. The less populated states in middle America would never have a say in the election.

Democracy does not, and will never, work. Once people realize they hold the purse strings, it's over. Ben Franklin predicted this.
All democracy means is of, for, and by the American people. That's it. But I'd wager that since you love the word republic so much, you'd rather have a system that is of, for, and by the American Billionaires.
Without the electoral college California, Illinois, NY, Ohio and Pennsylvania would decide every election and the rest of the country would be at their whim no matter how stupid that whim might be

The Electoral College is a form of democracy. "Consitutional Republic" and "democracy" are not mutually exclusive terms. In fact, all alleged democracies around the world are either a constitutional republic or a constitutional monarchy.
There is no such thing as constitutional republic. Only constitutional monarchy where king power is limited or purely ceremonial.
The electoral college needs to be reformed, but not eliminated. The main point of the electoral college is to give all states a say in the election. If you eliminate it entirely, then CA, TX, FL, IL, PA, & NY would decide every election. Those states would become SO CORRUPT your head would spin.

Umm, a popular vote, despite being orthogonal to the 'design' of the USA, would not eliminate swing states. They would just always be New York, California, Florida and Texas so neither of the dominant parties would need to campaign anywhere as neither can barely move the needle in these states. The number of electoral college votes is already loosely coupled to population anyway.
Instead of railing against the EC system, maybe insist that an ID is necessary to vote in a federal election and only citizens should be counted in the census which decides congressional representation?

Jimmy, you're referring to voter fraud and corporate voting. Decades ago, the federal government decided that corporations are people, despite them *not* being people and are simply goals that people cooperatively work towards, and that allowed the rich to put extra weight behind their own votes. Eliminating the Electoral College without replacing it with ranked choice voting, blocking corporate votes and big money in politics, and letting that decide the state vote won't address that problem. This isn't a problem we can solve with a singular solution, we have to batch it.

The electoral college needs to be tweaked so that the winner ALWAYS has the popular vote.

Jimmy, there is a purpose for the electoral college. The founders DIDN'T want a democracy because democracies always implode. That's why we are, in theory, a constitutional republic. So each state is supposed to be its own independent entity. That's why we have 50 different elections for president, not ONE. If we left it up to a popular vote then the entire center of the country can be ignored and campaigning could be done just in cities. That's why we have the system we have and going to a popular vote would simply accelerate our descent into tyranny. All democracies eventually vote themselves into tyranny.
