My Abuela’s Soup and Legacy

  • I’m excited to share with you this memory of my Abuela’s favorite dish. It’s called Son Largo and it’s a beef and vegetable broth originally from the state of Veracruz, here in Mexico.
    My abuela and her family migrated from Veracruz early in her childhood and every time she made that soup her kitchen was overflown with memories of her siblings, the humid afternoons by the river Papaloapan and of course her beloved mother. Her face light up and all the smells from the pots became more intense.
    Now my Abuela is gone.
    And I’m happy for her for now she must be with her mother. But I really miss her. Very very much.
    So now it’s my turn to make the famous soup. And to remember her while I cook and recount her stories of rivers I’ve never visited in Veracruz.
    And the smells intensify and my heart finds comfort. I feel her in every spoonful and I know she’s cooking by my side.
