Excerpt from 1920 film "Karelian Wedding" with kantele music. The music is played by Antti Kettunen ( / kettuantti , Hannu Saha, Arto Järvelä (violin), and Wilho Saari. Check out their videos!
Wonderful film! Is there any information about in which part of Karelia it was made? Finland? Russia? In 1920, Finnish Karelia would have extended much further east than presently.
I think that there is some mistake in the subtitles. Why brides hair is united? usually hair was separate to 2 parts: one part for brides family and another for family of groom. since that women never were able to mix them, even had to wash it separately.
Sad. In the marriage the families are supposed to join through the married couple. This separate hair parts keeps up the traditions to keep the families apart. But I guess rises more of the need to keep ties to the childhood home. Especially when those times the families didn't travel much, married women especially didn't leave their village much. Or their house, if they lived far from any village.
Se riippui, missä päin Karjalaa oltiin. Itä-Karjalssa oli paljon enemmän köyhää ortodoxi Karjalaisia. Enemmän Eurooppalaista Karjalaisuutta nähtiin Etelä-Karjalassa, Wiipurissa.

Every Karelian boy and man could dance "ripatsku", also my "Tata", from Куркиеки Kopпиcapи, in the lost Karelia.
Thank you for uploading this. It is very interesting to see the traditions. Some of my old ancestors come from Karelia.

Aëlle Robbins
Back when this was filmed, Russia was still part of Finland ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
These are Russian dances, not Finnish.

Those were different times. Different attitudes. Different traditions. People themselves were different.
EthanEnoch May I ask you where did you find this film. It's almost 100% sure that there are some of my forefathers in the film.
This was filmed in 1920, in Suojärvi.
