2023 updates about Amazon HQ2 in Crystal City Arlington Virgnia since the layoffs
Amazon's second headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, known as HQ2, has faced some challenges since the company announced massive layoffs in late 2022. The tech giant confirmed that it was cutting 10,000 positions across its devices and services division, citing an uncertain macroeconomic environment and a need to prioritize its customers and business. The layoffs raised questions about the impact on the highly anticipated HQ2 project, which promised to create 25,000 jobs in Arlington in exchange for more than $550 million of cash incentives.
However, Amazon has assured that the layoffs will not affect the first phase of HQ2, which is on track to open in June 2023. The first phase, called Metropolitan Park, consists of two 22-story office towers that will accommodate more than 14,000 employees. It will also feature more than 50,000 square feet of retail space for small local businesses and a 700-person meeting center that will be available to community groups.
The second phase of HQ2, called PenPlace, has been paused indefinitely by Amazon. The second phase was expected to include three more 22-story office buildings, another 700-person meeting center and the Helix, a 350-foot helix-shaped tower that was approved for construction in April 2022. The Helix was designed to be a unique landmark that would offer public access to green spaces and views of the city. Amazon said it decided to shift the groundbreaking of PenPlace out a bit because it was always evaluating its space plans to make sure they fit its business needs and create a great experience for employees.
Amazon said it has hired more than 8,000 corporate and tech roles at HQ2 to date and remains committed to creating 25,000 jobs in Arlington over the next decade. The company also said it will work to support any employees who may be affected by the layoffs by helping them find new roles within the company or offering them a package that includes a separate payment, transitional benefits and external job placement support.
Crystal City, Arlington is a neighborhood in transformation, with many exciting developments planned or underway for 2023. Here are some of the highlights:
- *Amazon's HQ2* will open its first new office buildings in the summer of 2023, bringing thousands of jobs and innovation to the area. The buildings will feature modern architecture, street-level retail, public art and green spaces.
- *Crystal City Metro Station* will get a second entrance at the northwest corner of 18th Street South and Crystal Drive, improving access and convenience for commuters and visitors.
- *VRE Crystal City Station* will be relocated and expanded to accommodate more passengers and trains, as well as to connect with the future **CC2DCA multimodal connector**, which will provide a direct link between Crystal City and Reagan National Airport.

Interesting video. I've been living in this neighborhood for quite some time...I always see these videos that speak of crystal city like it wasn't an amazing community before Amazon and the National Landing project. I miss the old crystal city/Pentagon city area....yes there have been a few cool additions like Alamo, however those two monstrous buildings on Eads, sigh..... its unfortunate because I really like my neighborhood but what comes with new developments, are 'new people' and different vibes. 🤷🏾‍♀️ I have also watched the traffic increase .... I can't imagine what it will become.
