Orbea Avant Disc 2021 Review: An Affordable Alloy All-Road Bike with Integrated Cables!

- The Avant is a new aluminium endurance road bike from Orbea that is aimed to be the perfect affordable road bike for the beginner cyclist or somebody upgrading to a better road bike for the summer or a second bike for commuting and winter training.
When it comes to highlights, the Avant features an integrated cabling solution at the front which is something you only see on high-end bikes. The triple-butted frame looks just as modern as the hidden cables and there’s space for 35mm tyres and it includes mudguard mounts. There are sensible details like a threaded bottom bracket and external seat clamp.
The range starts at £939 with rim brakes and tops out at £1749 with Shimano 105 and hydraulic disc brakes. The Shimano Claris-equipped bike featured in this video costs £1159.

I bought this bike a week ago. I'm stoked as new to a racer.
Great fit for me.
Love it everyday.
Might sound noobish, but I hit a new personal mark today in 42km.
Havn't looked back!
I'll never sell mine. Such a great allrounder. Enjoy. 🤙
The worlds best were noobs once, hope you’re still riding.
I have my avant h30-d now for 6months and i absolutly love it. Great video!!
Bought this bike with a 105 groupset and hydraulic brakes for $2K USD. It's a great bike and will not mind riding it forever. If money is no object, a DT swiss wheelset would be a nice upgrade. That's all the upgrade it needs, imo. Very capable, clean machine. No regret.
Awesome value love the integrated routing very nice.. threaded bb to.. excellent reviews as always really enjoy your channel
really cool that you get total integration for 1200£! looks much more premium even with claris and mechanical discs
Good to see a review on an entry level bike. Most other reviews are done on the highest end (see most expensive) bikes and add a footnote......and it comes in cheaper versions!
I have recently bought a Merida Scultura 200 that is perfect for me. Would like to see a review done on entry, mid and high end of each model with all reviews!
Very nice to get integration at that price. I have the OMX, and the design of oversized steerer bearings for cabling is practical, reliable, and stiff. I also have a Felt VR30 as my winter bike, which is really similar in specs to this bike (though I have 105, which I recommend, if you can afford it. 11 speed gives much more flexibility for upgrades.) Aluminum, fenders, big tires, and discs are perfect for a winter bike - and to put on the trainer in the winter. That’s another reason for 11-speed: Compatibility, if swapping this bike and a summer bike on a trainer.
i got the previous model H40 (tiagra) last year for 950E, and now with the bike shortages and price hikes due to the pandemic, i really appreciate its price and components. When this new model gets to 11xx Euro range - now its 1400E on Orbea site, H40-Disc - it will be a reasonable offer.
Just bought one of these. Will be delivered in a few days.
Great review David! What are your thoughts on how this Orbea compares to the Cannondale CAAD13 Disc 105? Would be great to hear from you.
The Avant is a very nice looking bike, the Rose Pro SL disc 105 has a really tidy cable management too.
If only they were shipping to the UK. Rose stopped supplying UK customers because of Brexit apparently!
@@richcrompton6891 The price would likely be uncompetitive. Rose are basically Asian bikes imported into Germany with minor processing, i.e. reboxed or a instruction manual thrown in the box previously they could export to the UK without tariffs under the 'last significant process' rule but because the Brexit agreement means UK importers selling products imported into the UK from outside the EU into the EU need to pay tariffs German companies have to pay tariffs to the UK when they are basically reselling Chinese bikes. It's much fairer to the UK now but also means many fake European products now will be much more expensive but not genuine European products where the majority of the product is made in Europe. Germany sells a huge amount of Asian products as its own at a higher price point. Even though the bikes will now have to pay tariffs they will still come in boxes saying 'Made in Germany'. I think thats why it gets awkward because it doesn't make sense that you pay tariffs for importing Chinese goods but then mark them as 'Made in Germany'.

Great review. Bought one with Shimano 105 group set and love it. Your review was helpful in making my decision.
Hello Sunny- do you know the weight of the 105 version. H30-D I believe
@@iana7808 It is just over 10kilos
Took it for a 45 kms ride today after two months break. Loved every minute of it.
@@sunnyphilip7314 thanks for coming back. Just concerned about the weight
road it for 1400 km, then switched to the orca... loved it.
Good review felt fair, I haven’t had good experience with cable disk, Gravel admittedly, but I managed to kill two sets before giving up and upgrading to hydraulic. But they never really had the power even on dry roads.
Agree re gearing few years back had a admittedly cheap gravel bike with 3/7 gearing claimed to be a CX but clearly never intended for racing etc. And it had the range but you did end up in between gears and chainrings.
Hello, do you know if there s possibility of mounting 10 gears on this hub ? And wich hydraulic braked did you use ? I also bought this bike but i need some changes :)
@@kamilkluger8937 I essentially upgraded to Tiagra bar the front mech, uses same pads and calliper is if not the same very close to the GRX stuff. Didn’t need to change the wheels from 9 to 10 speed.
@@rogercmerriman thank you so much :)
Will be buying one of these in white.
I was thinking of getting the Bianci Infenito XE, But this with a 105 group set is still $600 less.
Orbea alows you to customize your bike and possibly order with Carbon wheels, saving more.
Love the olive green color, and a 57 size fits better than Bianci 59, at my height 190 cm.
Great...but I miss the pre-covid ranges and prices, entry level bikes of mayor brands for about 600 with Claris...
Bike prices have rocketed in the last 6 months I reckon this bike pre covid would've been £899 max nice looking bike weight isn't everything
My wife looked at me when I was watching this video and the part he said, for more experienced cyclcist this is a good 2nd or 3rd bike.
can it easily be upgraded to a 10 or 11 speed rear end later down the road? this bike looks great! Im thinking about having one alongside my surly LHT
Perfect video! The weight of h40-d please?
Better solution than Trek's integrated cables on stem. Orbea's solution are under steering tube, protecting it from rain.
Hi David! I'm Giovanni from Italy and I am new. Thanks Bro for the review, I hope to take this bike soon, I just ordered it 3 months ago.. Do you suggest it for a beginner?
I have tested this bike with Shimano 105. Great bike, great value!
Do you by any chance mean the avant h30-D? I'm thinking about buying it. Are there things you don't like about it?
@@viktorsmets5182 Yes i mean the Avant H30-D. I have replaced the tires with Vittoria Terreno Zero, 33mm wide. I think they roll almost as well as the standard tires, but provide more comfort and provide the opportunity for use on gravel roads. The bike fits me perfectly. I wish the wheels were a little lighter, but I will upgrade that later. And the whole bike offers a lot of value for money!
@@eunaas thank for helping!
Just bought the H-60-D!
Tommorow expect my “Orbea Avant H30-D 2021” for £ 1749. Shimano 105. When compered with Giant, Specialized or Trek, it is the same quality and cheaper. Good value for money. Keep poduce good bikes and Orbea has future on market. 28c wheel for comfort on coutryside roads. Nice design. Work for me. And good video mate.
Hello Miroslav- do you know the weight of the H30-D can’t find it anywhere

David what do you think of the avant H50 rim brake Sora ? My other alternative is the trek Al 2 rim Claris for similar money. Thanks .
thank u so much
How would you rate the H30-D model with the 105 groupset and hydr brakes?
bought the 2021 H30 rim brake version. Before that I was afraid that - with the high handle bar - it could feel like a grandpa bike, but it really doesn't. Using it for commuting and trips with a backpack on. In this use case the geometry is very convenient. not super aggressive but still quite fast. I was afraid, the H40 (Tiagra) model with 10 speeds would be of low quality, with non rust resistant components. But frankly any thought on specific model choice is useless these days. In the (online) shop you can consider yourself lucky if you have a choice at all.😃
I bought the 105, rim brake version. Have loved it. But then again I’ve nothing to compare it to as it’s my first road bike. I know it’s supposedly heavier than other bikes at the price range but still feels light to me. I’m used to mountain bikes.
Can I ask you the size and the height you have ?
@@lucianocolitti it's a 57 inch frame. Not sure about the height. I'm 6' 3 but my inside leg is an average length - 31-32 ish. Hope that helps.

what is the best competition ready bike for the value
I didn't realize they still made 8 speed, that's a pretty huge compromise.
Nice!
What are the alternatives to this bike or comkpetitors in the same price range?
I mean they are giving you claris when other brands give you 105 or tiagra for this price. So they are giving integrated headset for that
Hola amigo, soy ciclista de MTB y quiero iniciar en gravel me la recomendarias? cuanto pesa? gracias Hello friend, I am an MTB cyclist and I want to start in gravel, would you recommend it? how much does it weigh? Thank you
Really keen on the Orbea Avant but not sure on buying this or the rim brake version. It's slightly cheaper but has Shimano 105 groupset. It also doesn't have the same cable integration at the front. I'm new to road cycling so looking for a bit of advice.
@@hcw199 Thank you and I agree with you. The cable integration is not really a deciding factor for me but looks pretty tidy. More interested in the difference between the Claris and 105 groupset. Also interested in people's opinions on the rim brakes vs disc brakes.
I've watched 2 of your videos. Well done! What's the max clearance on the avant?
Nice one! The Avant takes up to a 35mm
Giant contend AR 4 is a very similar spec'd bike for the price.
Any owner’s recommend a 53 for 5ft 8 rider or should I go smaller thanks if you can help on sizing
A question this model is manufactured in Zapata braking
Anybody know if you can mount a rear pannier rack and which one would fit?
Hi Dave :
For the RIM BRAKE version what is the max tyre width this frame can accommodate ?
Rim 28mm
Disc 35mm
Thks for the reply
what are the maximum tyres to fit in this bike ?
Hey, nice review, just wondering, are those rims tubless ready?
I would like to know that too. Any news?
Just had a look and the earliest I can get one is September 😒
What size? Ive sound some in the UK :)
Hi, a question reggarding the Steam spacers. For a bike that doesnt have those spacers, but I am thinking of buying them. Question is, do you also need to buy the inner fork for a longer one? Because the spacers really rise the handlebar a lot, and i am not seeing my inner fork so long for a start. (maybe its nor fork the proper term but the screw to tight the fork to the steam instead >) )
or maibe its called inner spoke sorry
Who knows how tall Arthur is and how size this bike is in the video?
Bought this bike purely for how beautiful it looks. Gave it as a present for my Girlfriend to get her involved in cycling (She was already keen on training indoor spinning) She immediatly put pressure on me even on my carbon bike hahaha, they definitely make no difference at all. Im selling my carbon bike to get this or the Trek emonda (Aluminium frame) Carbon is so overrated.
how much does it weigh ? For a 55 size ?
If you had to chose between this bike and a trek domane, which one would you chose ? 😊
Exactly what I’m considering at the moment! 😅
could you review the new cannnodale optimo? with rim brakes
Let me ask them and see what they say
Sir can hv yr email address
Can you change mechanical discs to hydro discs later down the line ?
I don't see why not but you'd have to get new hydraulic levers too, along with the calipers.
Nice but shockingly heavy for a modern Aluminum framed, carbon fork bike. Then again my personal Marin Nicasio all steel frame and fork bike is roughly 25lbs with pedals and upgraded wheelset and I don't really notice the extra 2 or so pounds of static weight. I'm not a fan of internally routed mechanical brake cables. Absolutely defeats the purpose of trading the power of hydraulic for the ease of maintenance advantage.
How wide tyre is it possible to mount in this bike?
it looks much more expensive than it is. the money saved should be enough to upgrade to a better set of wheels and thus losse a couple hundred grams
I am 170 cm and i m wondering if frame size 55 is ok for me
No 55 is for 180-185
Are the wheels tubless ready?
I'd like to know that too. Anyone?
8 speed cassette on a modern road bike? What year is this?
The year of the thin wallet and new cyclists?
Not a fan of cable actuated disc brakes; never felt much better than direct mount rim brakes (if better at all). Just don't have that 'bite' that hydraulic discs have.
Claris and mechanical disc brakes for over a grand?! Crazy. Could get an equivalent spec bike from Halfords for less than half that money.
Well, you do get cable integration, flat mounts and thru axles.
@@mattspare8835 flat mounts and thru axles are on a lot of bikes well under £1000, cable integration is cool and all but not everyone will want it. Especially a beginner who wants to work on their own bikes.
@@mattspare8835 Personally I don't need those things, far more important is frame quality and groupset. I totally accept the Orbea has been setup to resemble a more expensive bike but ultimately its a bike with a heavy basic 6061 frame and a low end groupset that is selling at a price point where much better bike are available.
Put a set of hydraulic hybrid caliper like trp they work well. Looks good but needs lighter parts
This seems like a downgrade for Avant. I have the previous all carbon Avant. It has a racier feel for an endurance bike. Upside is I can upgrade rim brakes to disk. Downside the cassette is 11-25. I'm running 25mm tires now but can only upgrade to max 28mm. I wasn't sold on gravel back when I bought the bike. Now I wish for fatter tires.
Expensive for what is hanging from that frame! Cheap as chips everything and then they throw in an integrated front end that has the same horrendous look of the new Giant Propel and defy. Bugly! And north of 10kg in weight!
agreed mate, would've been way better off for weight and price if they just went rim brakes on this.
Any idea what the weight would be with rim breaks ?
How to order? Web address pls. Thanks
It is a super looking bike, but it's not £1000, it's £1150, 15% more. Is it entry level, only for a few. Great if you can use a cycle to work scheme, but personally I think it's just that little too expensive, the extra £150 pushes it over for me. Nicely presented though.
Yes, unfortunately it was £999 when it first launched last summer but has gone up a bit since then
That in itself is a bad thing David, 15% price increase is rather steep, if only wages would do the same! Please don't take it personally, I know you are just trying to provide an objective service, keep up the good work.
Its not as bad as some price increases which are more like £500. That’s the pandemic and brexit impact unfortunately
No thats the simple market. Thats capitalism at its finest. Demand is huge, and there aren't enough bikes to cover it.
Kash À, true, I've been looking for several months now to buy a new road bike, I'm looking to spend around €2000, there are no bikes in stock! I'm now thinking I might buy second hand, there's a caad 12 ultegra for sale locally, I will probably end up with that
Integrated headset doesn't count for anything when you're actually riding. Whereas you can feel 11kg, 8 speed and mechanical discs. It's got the performance of an old cheap bike but is dressed up to look modern.
I wish I could hide my weight. :(
wow expensive af, for this price I wan 105 with hydraulic disc breaks, and I got that the last year, since then prices exploded, hardpass guys just wait till prices normalize
Lol. This is (entry level) bike Porn, and I got interrupted by an add for..................... Porn addiction! 🤔🤣
Triban 500 RC is a better value but don't come with the same front end integration.
Are they joking, Claris...!!!
there's no way in a million years I'm paying £1200 for a bike with claris
You know times have changed :p. A 105 road bike is £1800 now and a disc 105 £2200 I don't evebn want to mention ultegra..
Agree, for £1200 you can get a higher grade group set than claris or sora
That bike went up in price along with everything else imported a Month or so back.
I got last years Avant H30 with Shimano 105 for $1350 USD, these new prices are insane. $2,000 for the updated version of my bike just because it has disc brakes and integrated cables
@@garybird8646 true, you definitely see bikes getting sold out. However, at least here in Germany you can get a better groupset than Sora for 1200€
I think these European brands that basically import all the bits from the far east and maybe paint the frame and assemble and not much else now have to pay tariffs between the UK and Europe because the bike is 90% Asian with little processing in Europe. It may even be fully imported into Europe. Before Brexit such bikes could be sold into the UK without paying EU tariffs because of the last significant process rule that allowed EU importers to avoid tariffs.
I'd have to say you would get a far, far, far better bike for that money from Giant or Merida. They are actual manufacturers who manufacture their own frames. A recent price on Hotukdeals for a Merida road bike was £1000 and that had 105, a far superior frame based on 6066 aluminium and a full carbon fork but caliper brakes. That weighed about 8.2kg to 8.4kg being the caliper model.
The issue I have with this bike for its price are;
It's clearly a 6061 frame as no mention of it being more advanced aluminium and hence the bike weight
The forks have a aluminium steerer with carbon fibre blades so these are cheaper and more vulnerable to failing at the bonding point
The Claris groupset should not be sold on bikes costing £1159 in my opinion.
Personally I'd value the bike at about £600 even with pandemic pricing half what they are charging. Halfords do the Carrera Virtuoso which is similar at £375 often with discounts available to take it down to £300. That has an aluminium fork and the overall bike weight is very similar. It also has mainly Claris groupset and mechanical disc brakes.
I just think many of these European brand bikes now are appalling value in the UK much better to spend your money on Giant or Merida that offer far superior bikes for less money and have far more advanced frames. None of us know which factory Orbea has bought the frame and forks from it could be a poor manufacturer plus even if we did know which factory they used last year it could have changed this year especially with the pandemic causing many manufacturing issues in Asia.
Honestly someone paying £1159 or close to it for that bike has not done well in purchasing terms. I'd strongly suggest anyone considering one check out similar priced models from Giant and Merida they may be gobsmacked how much better the bikes are for the same money.
I'd also say there is nothing wrong with Claris its a fantastic groupset and amazing value but it just shouldn't appear on bikes over £1000.
Thanks for writing the comment I couldn't be bothered taking the time to write 👍.
btw, merida>>>giant
@@sergeyandrushko600 That's a matter of opinion, I'd actually put Giant as higher but both are great manufacturers probably the best mass manufacturers of aluminium frames on the planet and high up for carbon fibre frames. In fact I saw a Giant manufactured frame on Luescher Technik and it was amazingly good with no voids or real issues at all which is very rare for carbon fibre frames.
At least some 10 years ago alu frames were still made in Spain. Orbea frames have lifetime warranty and it's a prestigious brand that equips pro teams. There is no reason to think that Merida o Giant have better quality frames.
@@bellezayverdad The Orbea bike the subject of this video is appalling value with low end components surely any Giant or Merida at a similar price point will be vastly superior, likely using a lighter more advanced aluminium as well as much better components so I'm unsure what you mean by 'no reason to think Merida or Giant have better quality frames'. Surely there is every reason to believe they will be better because the bike on offer here is terrible for the money. They equip pro teams to give prestige to the brand but that has to be paid for as a lump of money on every Orbea bike and Orbea don't sell bikes to anywhere near the same quantity as Giant and Merida. Lets not forget not only are those huge brands but they are actually OEM manufacturers and make many higher end aluminium and carbon fibre road bikes for other brands which typically cost a lot more than buying a Giant or Merida bike of the same spec because of multiple parties needing to make a profit.
I think most people would accept this Orbea bike is frankly terrible value for money and best avoided at anywhere near this price, it is just totally uncompetitive based on its specification and price point. Ultimately perceived quality is not the same as actual quality. You may perceive Orbea as a quality bike based on its heritage and link to pro racing but the actual reality of looking at the bike shows poor quality and value for its price point. This isn't just a criticism of Orbea it applies to many European and US brands who have no manufacturing plants themselves and rely on Asian factories and spend huge sums on sponsorship and marketing. Ultimately they represent very poor value to the end consumer. Obviously some people are much more susceptible to marketing than others and that is how they sell their high price, low spec bikes. Others are looking to get the most bang for their buck.
Claris on a bike costing 1200 is not what I would consider value. Also that stem just looks horrible.
1200 pound sterling for an 8-speed bike with mechanical disc brakes. LoL!
I would pay 500 quid for this bike max
Full integration and disc brakes are complete nonsense at this pricepoint. This bike is way too heavy for being a serious roadbike, period. North of 11 kg ready to ride, not so good brakes, super heavy cheap disc brake wheelset, no way! It looks nice, but a „regular“ roadbike with tiagra/105 11-speed and 8-8,5 kg would be the better choice. No road cyclist wants to pedal such a tank with a 3 kg penalty..
Any idea what the weight would be with rim brakes ?
Shimano Claris for 1k and you call it serious bike ?!! This ia s JOKE!! 🤣🤣🤣
New cyclist..£1k... no... beginners will be looking at sub £500 to be honest
I can agree that some new cyclists want to spend £300-500 on a bike. And they can do that. Others do want to splash out more and this bike would be a good choice. Just got to give options to people so they can make a confident choice.
I paid £550 for my alu tiagra rim brake bike 3 years ago. I didn't even consider anything over £800. I still own and ride the same bike, I find the current prices extortionate for basic models.
Sadly, entry costs to those considering the hobby is out of reach for many imo.
I have a Tifosi CK3 Claris, yes rim brakes and it’s circa 2016, I paid £400 put a charge spoon and some conti grand sport for £50 ish. So inflation has really kicked in! Also I am no novice but I have and always worked in a low paid but extremely rewarding public service Job, I pay the mortgage bills and feed us including children so costly bikes are a no go unfortunately, so please don’t confuse budget with passion most cyclists I know just ride what they can afford and meets there needs £££ spent changes nothing!
@@jonathanellis1842 Very well said!
@@brightpixeluk Is it a good choice it looks appalling value for the specification with many similar bikes available for far less or many much higher spec bikes available for similar money. £1159 for a Claris road bike just seems ridiculous. I bought a Vertigo Carnaby road bike from Tesco Direct when they were clearing them out a few years ago for £62 with Claris and the going rate for Claris road bikes from the big brands back then was about £400-500.
