Here's the video that inspired this piece: czcams.com/video/NO088uuGJYM/video.html
I really, as an artist, appreciate the deep sense of empathy you exuded having to explain the reason you stopped. The genuine hurt and pain that you empathize with is difficult to sit through comfortably, and it's probably why, even now, I have a really hard time finishing the book Pet Semetary....it's a book that just exudes grief. Everything about being an artist is putting yourself in the shoes of the people you create and it can be deeply uncomfortable and even too much to bear...
Thank you. I agree. To me, empathy in art is the point
This video so accurately represents how intense it is to create art. The best artists immerse themselves into their creations and sometimes it takes you to a dark and unhappy place.
Thank you. Yeah... sometimes the art really does take you places you weren't expecting to go. Sometimes, it's good, sometimes not so much. Thanks for watching. I'm glad it connected with you :)
Sometimes we the audience forget that the process for an artist can take a toll too. Thanks for being brave enough to show your process and emotional reaction to your own material! Bravo!
thank you 'sreeve' whoever you are ;)
This episode is kinda emotional... Well, as an art enthusiast, I really really understand the feeling why the artists cannot finished his/her work due to the emotion within the works. Like losing someone that he/she loved, or reminds him/her for the trauma in the past... It is very very human and you made a right decision to not made the "Children".
And by the way, I listen you in Mais Oui! Podcast and I just recently knew that you had a bad Injury in the past but Fortunately you're able to pass those hard times and finds your way to become a sculpture, such a inspirational stories from you, never give up and keep makes some art 👍👍
Thank you so much for your kind words 😭😭 It's very encouraging to hear
Art you are simply amazing, I wish I could do something even close to ANY of your pieces, your artistry blows me away. I definitely can't want for your next piece but for now I'll go back and re-watch your sculpts again as always. Oh you did mention for those of you that made it to the end !! I never want it to stop to be honest. Take care and wish ya a speedy recovery
Thank you Jim, that's very kind of you :)
First off I have to praise you for being brave, telling the story, and reasoning. As an artist we never need excuses for what we do, inspiration is just that. I respect what you have decided to do because you are an incredible artist. Please keep them coming because you are also a great communicator on how you go about the process. Wish you have an actual class. I am new to sculpting and having a hard time knowing what to sculpt.
Thank you :) I appreciate the kind words. I'm actually currently experimenting with with private lessons. If it all goes well, I'll expand it to a wider audience.
When I have trouble figuring out what I want to sculpt, I work on the basics. Just do a skull study or an anatomy study. Sometimes, that's enough to get an idea going.. sometimes, it's just good practice :)
I really enjoy watching your videos, both the sculpting and the thought process behind it all. Whenever I'm working on a project (resin, sewing, clay, whatever it might be), I'll often choose a "harder" way of working on something just so I can put that emotion and work into what I'm making. For example, a couple years ago my best friend had a baby. I decided to make her a big baby blanket as a present. I could have finished this blanket in a day if I used my sewing machine, but I chose to hand stitch everything so I could really think about why I was making the blanket and why it was important. I feel like unless you're an artist - or a creator in general - it can be really hard for people to understand the emotions behind what you're working on. I feel like I'm learning through watching, with you explaining why you're choosing poses or design decisions. Your work is fantastic, and I look forward to seeing updates on your channel.
I have to say having the dead child really makes a big impact on the overall theme and sculpture. The dead child brings home how haunting she is. It shows how the people in the area where she haunts feels. It's brings home the deep sadness she feels and what the people affected by her feel. I hope you make a new version and have the child there. Without the child this is just any other ghost or ghoul. Now the sculpture has lost the meaning and fear of this legend. To me it has no significance anymore. It's an amazing sculpture for sure but now it's just that a lifeless bland sculpture.
Agreed. It feels more like a mock up of the completed piece. I feel like it’s sculptures like these that you really have to disconnect yourself from the piece.
To shy away from death is to shy away from life.
I'll easily admit that I clicked this mainly for the thumbnail. I didn't read into the weight of the title, because this is CZcams, and sincerity is pretty much dead. But then I slowly got drawn into the process, watching you work on this piece which clearly held a special place in your heart that I will never quite understand because I too am poisoned by cynicism, as are the people who have eroded the sincerity across most of the internet.
I know my comment is way late, but maybe, with the perspective of time, it can be to you and whoever bothers to read it. (Before I continue, Trigger/Content warning for the rest of my comment, basically same as the video.)
I just felt that there was a disconnect between La Llorona and the dead child, that made it more painful, almost. In my mind I wondered, what if instead of walking away, she was actively embracing it, dragging the child into the river as she had done with so many others? Maybe this is just me, and maybe this is making it worse for most other people to consider, but I feel like La Llorona is striking because of that maternal aspect. A mother that needs a child in her arms only to keep losing it.
To be clear, this change in posing would do absolutely nothing to lessen the tragedy of the child's death, and that is not what I am trying to imply. I just feel that to get to the core of this character, there needs to be interaction between her and the child.
I feel like I am not quite able to put my thoughts into words, but the way she is just walking away from the dead body in your initial concept, felt off. The child needs a mother's embrace, I almost want to say, even though La Llorona's hands bring the opposite of comfort.
I don't know. It is rare for a video to break through my iron shell of cynicism, but when it does, it does so in interesting ways, I guess.
Latina woman here! Your pronunciation it's really good :D
Loved this sculpture ❤️
I understand the emotional response to this. I did skip the discussion and work on the child because I'm a mother of two and it hurt my heart (even knowing that this is a mere representation). As always, I enjoy seeing your process and hearing your thoughts as you review your progress.
Thank you Mairìan :)
Thank you for this video. I almost never comment but this really gave me an insight beyond the technical creative process. I see "cool looking character/design/diorama" but I never see what the creator saw in the piece. Thanks for opening my eyes.
Thank YOU Frank. I appreciate you watching and taking the time to leave a note :)
that's the thing about art, its a form of expression for most people, people can get lost in their art, there is a reason vent art exists too. i remember when I lost my father, I couldn't verbalize the pain i felt at that time, i still can't, but I could draw it. so i drew a whole lot during that time, expressing my pain the best I could, art has many intentions to be used for, and not to sound cheesy, but yes, art can be held to a very emotional standpoint and people underestimate the raw emotions and mindset people put themselves into when creating art.
Your sister brought me to your channel a couple of months back. I really enjoy the style of your videos and how you narrate us through the process of what you're doing and thinking. I have no desire to ever sculpt, but seeing how you navigate through the process makes it enjoyable to watch. Keep it up Art!
Thank you :) Always good to hear from non-sculptors, haha. I make videos for everyone so it's good to know it's connecting with non-sculptors as well
You have such a big heart. Thank you for all your thoughts during your sculpts... it's always so nice to hear your thought process. ❤
You said it very well. The story was correct also. The sculpture was fantastic and so beautifully done even if it's about a sad story of a women drowning her 2 boys. Well done. Just Amazing. The sculpture speaks for itself. Great choose not adding the kids.
Hi what u did in the end was the right thing leaving the child out as u were showing the pain she was feeling all that loss was written in her face u did amazing job .x
This is beautiful work
As always Art your work is top notch, the detail you captured was on point. I hope you recover soon mate and get back to it as i do really enjoy your vids and thank you for being honest and open about how you felt making this piece, i didn't really think sculptors would get that emotionally involved with their creations but hearing that from you made me see another side to it, thank you for that. take care
Thank you Stephen :) Yeah I don't know if this is something all sculptors do either.. but I bet many do, even if they don't say it. As always, I appreciate you :)
Just shows how powerful art expression is! It can take us to amazing places... or places we'd rather not see. Amazing!
Your dedication and sensitivity to your subject and its context is amazing to see.
Thank you Art for being such amazing amazing artist and person ❤
Another stunning piece, she looks so sorrowful. ❤️ Love how dedicated you are going in the shower and all hahaha.
I think it was the right call to step away from the piece and remove the child, those are the type of feelings I'd say are good to listen too as opposed to more internalised feelings such as thinking it's just not working and wanting to quit cause you feel bad about your work. And I quite liked the video format it brought us, as it seems to me that the time that passed after sculpting makes for a different kind of reflective narration. Very informative! Wouldn't mind seeing it return someday. 😊
Oh and yet again your beauty shots are just *chef's kiss*.
Hope the recovery is going well! I listened to the podcast you mentioned and your accident just had me wincing to the moon and back, you are a trooper!
Thank you Cindy!! As always I appreciate your kind words :) This certainly was an eye opening experience for me in getting in touch with my own emotions as I make art.
My recovery is going well, thank you. I'll be back on my feet soon enough :)
@@ArtChongArt That's good too hear! 😁
(1) Your pronunciation it's correct: I'm from Venezuela.
(2) What a GREAT artist you are. Amazing piece of art.
Thank you so much :)
With every video I watch from you I am born away more and more each time. You really are amazing man. Great job and awesome content
First!
Hope your well after your surgery.
As always great work, really appreciate your format, even on the dark themed sculpts!
Congrats on first! And thank you for watching :)
Finally got the time to watch the whole video. Love the sculpt, it turned out awesome as usual, and wow, didn't expect the emotional experience you had there. But you know what, I couldn't imagine you sculpting a dead kid either. Oh and congrats on passing 1K subs and take care of that foot 😁
Thank you :))) ❤️
I love that you expressed how you felt... thank you
Thank YOU :)
I've also had dark images come out of me that made me wonder "where the hell did that come from?" It's disturbing, at least to me, to believe something like that is buried in there. I really love the expression on her face.
I really enjoy the introspection of the narration. Many videos are just about technique or about banal topics so one art video is pretty much the same. This was an interesting insight into the process of the artist. Thank you
What an awesome work! Congrats :)
Thank you for sharing your art and talent with the world! You inspired me to start sculpting and no it’s one of my favorite forms of art expression
Wow thank you :) I’m so glad to know you’re giving sculpting a try and are enjoying it
La llorona, super !! Gran trabajo 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks foe your thoughts and really don't worry back a way is the right thing to do your sanity is something to protect and we don't always know what will set it off so good for you to see that and can't wait for your next one.
Thank you Joelle :)
Thank you for sharing this feelings and back story with us. It makes us realize that for an artist, your clay is something more than a lump of wet stuff and you identify with your work. I think it's amazing and hope to see something similar in the future (maybe not so gruesome or depressing) - the narrative behind the sculpture.
Maybe a piece where she comes out from the river (she's visible from the bust up) and the boy is standing on the shore, still alive would be better but I'm not really sure. As for the La Llorona herself, she was always a desperate and very, very sad person (and story) for me. It speaks volumes to me each time I hear about it so I totally get where you get that feelings from.
Thank you Katarzyna :) I hope to not do something this depressing for a while... well actually I promise no such thing, lol. I only promise that I will do my best and put my heart and soul into it, whatever it is. Thank you for sharing your thoughts as well.
Art communicates. It’s a message. And art at its core says “hey look at this. This is beautiful or worth thinking about” and when it comes to horror…well…it can only be beautiful when good triumphs over evil because THEN the message is “there’s still hope”
I mean, you can have silly stuff. Like the octopus stuff but even with that there’s a message. You get what you deserve.
Anyways, I’m glad I found your channel. Binged watched a lot of your videos today.
Art represents the feeling in the moment and if the art effects you strongly than the art did what it's ment to do I understand stopping when the art gets real ice done that a lot in my own work I hope that fear of finishing an artwork doesent stop you all together doing art your really great at it.
I think that's the effect of this sculpture: excruciating and scary. I'd continue with the idea u originally had but I get your point ;)
Wow fascinating. I think you made the right call. Art can be really powerful but it seems like the message of this one (as originally intended) is not one you were really wanting to communicate. I personally would have found it gratuitous and not adding much to the finished piece anyway. It's enough just to know the story of the piece to feel the emotion.
Loved your Pad Thai recipe. Turned out great!
Amazing work really beautiful!
Thank you!
Superb work as usual Art .. and the commission of it was very emotional as you expressed in the video. You pushed yourself and succeeded in creating something beautiful yet painful. I read that a painting should take up a place in your mind, not just on the wall. That's how I see this sculpture. ... you had an idea, you strove to create and it tore at your soul. To me that's as it should be .. passion and emotion they say won't get you very far in art, but you'll get nowhere without them ... Keep on making art, Art.
Thank you Rod :) I appreciate your kind words. I'll keep trying my best
Amazing!!!
Thank you :)
Your pronunciation of llorona is way better than most I've heard non spanish speakers say. I've heard lorena, yoyolarea, and lloreina.
Art, I can resonate with you from an artist perspective! While working, I try to envision the finished product not just a "lump of un-detailed clay". So sorry to hear how much this piece effected you in a negative way! I think it's super brave that you decided to finish this project!
Thank you 😊
Best Art piece by far 😢
love your work
Thank you so much :)
Wow, the atmosphere is the best.👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you :)
much respect to him
Thank you :)
To me without the context of the kid it feels like just a zombie girl, not an emotional story of a dead mother looking for her child
Wait, you should paint your sculptures!! ❤️
I forgot to add that I find this truly great and frightening at the same time. Great art is supposed to make you feel.
Thank you :)
Thank you for being true to yourself.
Thank you :) I’m trying my best
I love how the artwork helped you define who you are. How healthy. Nope. Not gonna go there.... this is not me, and I'm gonna stop. Bravo. I like how sensative you are to what the character is feeling; who they are. Good for you. The sculpt is still amazing.👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you Frenchelle :) I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos for taking the time to write so many nice comments. It makes all the effort worthwhile when the art really connects with someone. Thanks again!
it was super nice i like it
Thank you :)
You see feel emotionally touch your result as your making ... omg your the first that I've run across that feels something apprently like me. When I'm making. I see finished work from the start it's pose it's purpose it's emotional state and take away everything else. Leaving the work and raw emotion that I felt while making, same for you yes?
You've done a great job with this piece. As an artist myself, I understand all too well the emotion locked within a piece as you work it into its final form. What I've learned to do over the years when a work strikes me, as this one clearly has you, is step away from it for awhile. Sometimes that helps and in some cases... it just makes things worse. Writing what it makes you feel helps more than you might think. Moreover, writing it from the subject's perspective can help resolve the devastating emotions locked to the art. Fictionalize it, crawl into the character's head and embrace what they're feeling in an effort to understand exactly why they're feeling that way. It doesn't matter if you're a good writer or not. It helps you to process it through the 'muse' in order to accomplish what you set out to create. In some cases, doing that can help the 'muse' that has inspired the piece to rest easier in your mind.
Thank you Rose :) Yes, sometimes writing it out helps a lot
Without even reading the title I knew it was based off La Llorona . Great job. Inspiring me to continue sculpting
Thank you :) That's interesting that you picked it up right away
@@ArtChongArt haha yeah I’m Mexican so ive been familiar with this tale my whole life. The image just reminded me of it
@@seras2996 I'll take that to mean I've captured her essence. Thank you again :)
Art my friend, you are my sculpting hero,I laughed when you said about getting in the shower “True artist”,and I am sorry mate,I understand some things we see and experience gives us a mental block, that you would rather not go back and revisit, but your work really is inspiring mate, thank you for sharing 😁👍
Thank YOU for watching and for your kind words :)
I had to bow out of a full view, but I love your work!
Thanks Sam :)
I love this, I really like monsters and horror stuff, I got a witchers sword with all my monsters heads on my back as tattoo from a talented artist, this reminds me of the maiden wraith.
Thank you :) Witcher 3 nightwraith/noonwraith was an influence, though I didn’t reference them directly. Good eye!
It didn't need the child. You could imply a child with a toy or a shoe, but it's great as is. Just found you, liked, subbed, and turned on notifications.
Thank you :)
When I saw this artwork I am did not believe that this is a clay work. 😉 You are really really a great artist 👍 and I love this clay work 👍 I have no words to explain this. Thank you so much for this great sharing. 😉 Stay happy stay safe my dear great artist 👍

ese tipo e material endurece? si no como hacerlas mas duraderas?
I'm guessing the grief is what got to you. The perpetual agony of killing children, and the horrible, gut-wrenching regret that would come with that. Like, I could feel why you had to stop right then and there because having to imagine what the child's face would look like. The terror, fear, and just...death. It's incredibly hard to think about or see. It's why I can never watch Grave of the Fireflies again, and why I sobbed after watching it. It represents a dark truth to reality that none of us want to think about. That the small and innocent can be taken away as easily as the old and frail. That death does not discriminate, and worse, that some people are capable of horrible things, even mothers to their children.
Wow
I need to find new compliments for your videos ... I liked it, it was a very emotional one. The sculpture is amazing (i'm really fond of mythological caracter and story, tales and drames). I'm repeating myself but your creative process and your implication (it reminds me of the immersion of actors to get into the skin of their character) allow you to feel what you want to express for your caracter. The emotional breakdown is very well convey. Your work can't stop to amaze me, I can imagine a all story just from one of your sculpture (and this feel amazing).
I've listened to your podcast when you mentionned it in your last video, and I hope your leg is doing ok, and that you're not in too much pain. Was the surgery meant to fuse your ankle ? (I wouldn't want to be indiscreet). I wanted to dm you to let you know that I listened to it (but i'm too shy
Thank you Juliette :) Funny, I'm running out of ways to thank you for your kind words, and I'm very happy that the work is connecting with you. As an artist, I don't know if I can ask for much more than for the intended feeling to come across.
Yes, the surgery is to fuse my ankle. It's feels strange to leave the info out here in public comments, but I suppose it's not really a secret lol.
Thank you again. I appreciate you taking the time to write long these comments :D
what happened to your leg bro?
after a long time waiting for your latest video. using wet wipes as an image of the dress....ahahaha.
awesome sculpture for chavant material...very good work, and get well soon bro
Thanks! It was a rock climbing accident. I tell the story behind the accident on the podcast 'Mais Oui' mentioned in my 'A Taste of Honey' video. The link to the podcast is in the pinned comment there :)
What is the body reference book you are using?
Art, what is the book you have in the video. That looks very interesting. Great video 👍👍👍
Thanks Steve. That book is Anatomy for Sculptors by by Sandis Kondrats and Uldis Zarins
WOW!!!!! You are amazing. You let me watch you go from a block of clay through to fruition. Do you teach your Art to pupils? Are you self taught?...Like I said in the beginning you are Amazing!!!!
Thank you so much :) I’ve taken a couple online classes, watched videos on CZcams, and that’s helped a lot. I don’t think I have enough expertise to teach just yet. One day perhaps!
I completely understand how that could take a toll on you. I may have the unpopular opinion and liked it with the child there. I shows the full story. But its amazing without it too! You're very talented and love every video
Thanks Paulina. I had the same thought as I was recording the little segment; that it might have been a stronger piece with the child. I don't regret the decision either way. It was a learning experience to be sure, haha. Thanks again for watching :)
I too thought it was better with the child. Much more powerful. But either way an amazing piece
You are just so amazing.
😍😍
Make me wanna pick up sculpting.
But I won't be able to do a hundredth as good as you 😂😂.
Btw I really wish you'd consider Goddess Durga. But no pressure at all.
Luv ya ❤️❤️
Haha, you can certainly give it a try :) If you have fun and are expressing yourself, that's what counts.
Do you have a link to like an Extra Credits or Overly Sarcastic style video for Durga? Not to say that I will do it, but I'm interested in myths and legends anyway (obviously)
@@ArtChongArt certainly
Here is an animated video of Goddess Kali, the goddess of destruction of the evil, an avatar of Goddess Durga
czcams.com/video/ZIQg0sFdW0Y/video.html
Or you can take references from Durga Puja Idols on Google.
The universal picture of Goddess Kali is.
1. Pitch Black skin tone
2. Long dreadlocks
3. 10 hands with different weapons.
4. Wearing tiger hide
5. Wearling garland of demons' heads and snakes and millipedes for jewellery.
6. Drinking demon's blood.
Overall spine chilling scary.
While the idea of Raudra (angry) Durga is
1. Standing on a lion
2. With her trident in Demon Mahishasura's chest.
3. Her lion chewing on Mahishasura's buffalo.
4. 10 hands with different weapons.
5. Dreadlocks, but wearing a huge crown.
6. Wearing a saree and jewels.
Also very scary but more carefully dressed.
I hope this helps 😍😍
ALL THE BEST. ❤️
Awesomme, i didnt like the movie, but i defenently like your art. Keep up the good work
Thanks! I never saw the movie myself. This is based on the legend more generally :)

la Lorana >> osunds like the hill house series was inspired by this XD
La llorona Is fron México Bro.
He said central latin america, not so far from Mexico.
very interesting because i dont think i would've had any problems with sculpting/visualizing a dead child (except the necessary skill), or anything that would make me feel remotely as emotinal as you. i guess i lack empathy
I don’t know if you lack empathy. Not every artist get into their subjects as deeply as I do. I don’t think it’s good or bad to be this way. It’s just the way I am ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
he forgot to mention that she killed his children because his husband cheated on her, and she wears a wedding dress to represent that too, you did a poor's people clothing, so she looks more like a banshee which is still cool, but doesnt give me la llorona feeling, as la llorona wears a lot of complicated white fabric. source: south american here.
what the hell , that's so horrible
well, now i had a 2 sec trying to imagine you in the shower playing with wet cloth, surely formative. well back to the video.
😂😂😂 Didn't think you were gonna get THAT from a sculpting video, did you?
@@ArtChongArt nope!!! hahahaha
sometime (ssssss) my imagination work way tooooo much and i had the pic of you with a tablecloth trying to hold everything while looking in the mirror stumbling on the shower curtain.. well. Sorry but it was funny.
Wish your getting better and hope to see you at Skulpt&Skoll NY time!!
You were also trying to take the pose.. sorry.. hahahaha
Great video la llorona I heard she killed her children cause she wanted her to be loved by her husband only her she was jealous of the children but then her guilt was unbearable
Thank you. Yeah I think there are several versions of the tale
to be honest. me personally would have gone on and done the child. i dont get why people are so sensative and emotional about it.
I don't get why people don't understand that they are not a reference for the whole human race.
I think getting into the mind of the characters is good although I think that your interpretation of what the character was thinking was possibly wrong, just my opinion though. I think if you put your emotions on how you would feel if you were that character is what is affecting you. Perhaps the character would not have been in their right mind, I think she would have been acting on love , thinking that she was saving her kids from something worse than death. In a desperate act she drown them to save them.
Thanks Shane. I appreciate the thoughtful comment.
Other raconteurs use film or text to tell horrible graphically violent stories and people pay money to consume it... nobody feels guilty especially when the subjects are fictitious. You didn't create this character.
Hmm... I'm going to assume you meant for this to be encouraging? I felt what I felt and I am not "other raconteurs". Telling me that other people don't feel this way so I shouldn't feel this way is rather dismissive, even if you meant well. Thanks for watching in any case.
