  • New York City's bike-sharing program recently launched, sending 6,000 bright blue Citi Bikes onto the streets of Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Supporters of the program say it's a great addition to New York City's existing public transportation options. At $95 a year or $9.95 a day (plus overtime fees), it's certainly an inexpensive alternative to a monthly MetroCard, which costs $112.
But critics worry that riders who are inexperienced or unfamiliar with the city's layout and bike rules could pose a danger to drivers and pedestrians.
Watch to find out what it's like to take out and ride a Citi Bike in the crazy streets of New York City.

Julie, Your seat was way to high. Next time adjust your seat lower and I think you will find that you will have much more stable ride. You should be able to touch the ground with you feet (tiptoes) while setting on the bike seat. Good luck and be safe.

Not true....her tiptoes should NOT touch the ground. The ball of the toes should be on the pedals with the leg fully extended while sitting.

I really think this is one of the best ideas ever. Other big cities should follow suit and I hope something like this doesn't die out like payphones have.

what if too many bikers are going to the same bike station, and all the bike slots are full, how can they return the bikes? (just random thought, wondering).. but overall, sound like a great program, no carbon dioxide, great exercise, might be a challenge to work through the cars and foot traffic (there is a lot of them in NYC)

The hubs are everywhere. You lock it back up at the nearest hub/station and walk right into the restaurant. There are literally hundreds of hubs in NYC, one every corner of every block almost.

Sorry but...'how to not hurt yourself' is not this simple, esp for someone like her who admits to being 'inexperienced'. There is a LOT to learn, especially if you are going to be riding the streets of Manhattan.
I for one would NEVER ride the streets of Manhattan. (I only ride along very specific streets, in my Queens neighborhood.) That's how terrified I am. Because I understand how dangerous it is...that our streets and bike lanes are (for the most part) NOT well designed, nor safe, and...it's just not a risk I'm willing to take.
Most of our bike lanes are not truly protected/truly separated from moving vehicles. Many car owners blatantly break the law (including NYPD) and park or idle IN bike lanes. Many intersections and the timing of traffic lights are poorly designed, resulting in Turning vehicles - and cyclists who want to continue on, straight - having to 'compete' with each other.
Then there is the danger of getting doored. In unprotected bike lanes, cyclists always want to be at the far edge of the bike lane, AWAY from the parked vehicles, and more towards the moving vehicles, as the potential for getting 'doored' by a parked vehicle is very real.

Can I just hold my bike even if I don’t want to ride it and keep it docked? And if someone tries to take one of my docked bikes can I grab it back from that person? Let’s just say there is a Pregnant lady who just got off a 12 hour shift and wanted to use a bike that I didn’t want to pay for but yet I still wanted it, can I still keep that bike?

There's way too many bikes on the street now. Starting to look like Amsterdam. They should take the subway or bus, the cheapasses. I had to threaten to clothesline some dork off his citibike yesterday, speeding through the red light, almost running me down, no consideration.
