Your philosophy at wizard academy has seriously jeopardized my view of everything. Thought, I'm starting a food truck and I'm terrified and it's before I'm ready for sure. But the fact that there's a whole group of people out there, that will build the airplane after lunches has settled me in a dramatic way

Sure, you can do it badly, but this isn't just a hobby. You are involving others and their money, which is why we need standards. That's why it's worth doing well, so you don't deceive others and your self. Do you ever give refunds at the wizard academy,? Does Lochlea guarantee their product? It's just selfish ambition if you think about it. You should fund your pet project some other way and not drag everyone down.

This might be controversial, but I like this format more the previous one. I loved the old one obviously, and I don't think it was bad, but it's been a couple of years now that I have stopped watching vault videos and now I am enjoying them again. I enjoyed the banter and personality based content in previous ones, but I love hearing these stories, these conversations over a glass of whiskey we a friend is making me discover.

Now I get the Wizard Academy way of working. Completely agree with that process. Too many wait too long to start because they fear being ill prepared and never realize their goal for fear of failure. Great topic to go with a nice "young " Scotch!

As a small business co owner of a niche craft coffee company my background is logistics. I find a lot of people who never begin something never make it past the planning/research stage. One of the biggest things I've learned from logistics is don't make such detailed plans; create frameworks that can flex. Then when it all hits the fan you've probably got half a plan already together ready to go fix the issue.

Thought I was going to miss the Daniel/Rex combo on these (and I do a little), but I'm loving the chill relaxed conversation vibe and whisk(e)y nerd story time!
On another note, Lochlea is exciting and I was fortunate enough to attend a tasting in Minneapolis of Lochlea's current core range led by John Campbell himself. I wasn't sure what to expect from the relative young age of the whiskies but having John's fingerprints on them and I'll say I was very pleasantly surprised at the flavors they've been able to pull from 3yr old scotch. My advice, you see a bottle, you grab it and be sure to follow the progression of this distillery through the years as their stock ages. Sublime whiskies that will continue to find their shape and by releasing 3yr old versions you get to experience the progression as well. I believe John said the rough goal was to release some 6 to 7yr olds when able, but that it really depends on the whiskies/casks and what they are telling him.
Cheers Daniel, I'm glad you're here too.

A friend recommended you to me and I thought I was going to learn some great Whisky info and little did I know that I was getting a business/life lesson with some great Whisky info and "Nerd" stuff thrown in. I immediately realized that my amazing wife is an "artist" and a business genius whereas I'm a perfectionist. Thankfully...as a great spouse will do...she's breaking me out of the perfectionist prison and getting me to just launch. Can't wait to go through the rest of your content as my first "taste" was truly satisfying. Cheers.

I feel like this philosophy is completely supported by agile methodology. Anything worth doing, is worth risking failure. Failure is a stepping stone on the path to success. If your goals are lofty, it takes a lot of stepping stones to climb to higher goals. This is also why you make lower goals on your way to higher goals so that you can achieve some measure of success on the way to your ultimate success.

You mentioned offering suggestions for topics in one of your other videos. Could you do a video, maybe you already have, on how to refine one's palate? I've heard wine people say they lay out bowls of dark cherries or tobacco or whatever and then they take a sniff and then try to pick that scent/taste in the wine.
Is there a similar exercise for whisky drinkers?

Yes! This is huge for a neurodivergent brain. Fear paralysis leads to procrastination leads to stress and bigger tasks with shorter deadlines and we're screwed. Lol. Just start. Get something out of your head and into the world. Then mold it twist it rework it until it makes you happy. I also often cite the 4 stages of competence. Unconscious incompetence (not knowing what you don't know), conscious incompetence (knowing but sucking), conscious competence (functional but not great), and unconscious competence (mastery/not having to think to do the thing). The second stage is where many give up, because we know what mastery looks like and it feels so far away.

3:39 That seems pretty dark for being just three years old. I'm curious to know if they're doing anything unusual in aging the whiskey.
I'd also like to know whether there is, anywhere, an actual standard definition of "craft (distillery)." People use the term, but as far as I can make out, it mostly means "This distillery isn't as big as Jack Daniel's so I'm gonna look down on it."
9:24 You sound, here, kind of like Gen. George S. Patton Jr. 🙂 He said that a good plan executed now is better than the perfect plan next week.

      Chesterton is awesome.
I did some searches and found these:
“If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing badly.” - G.K. Chesterton, from _What's wrong with the world_
"...these things we want a man to do for himself, even if he does them badly.” and "the most terribly important things must be left to ordinary men themselves - the mating of the sexes, the rearing of the young, the laws of the state.” - Chesterton, from Orthodoxy

First and foremost, like many others, I really like this format; this presentation. It has a quieter, more comfortable feel. It's more intimate. I mean, who doesn't like to sit down and listen to a good story? And Daniel, you're a good story-teller.
Now, on a completely different note, is it just me, or does Daniel look a bit elven? What I mean by that is, there is something the angle that makes Daniel's ears appear pointy at times. I'm not saying that's bad, because with the beard and the earrings, he kind gives off, if I may, elven wizard vibes. Idk...again, probably just me. Anyway, cheers!

I believe that anything worth doing is only worth doing well giving 100% and anything not worth doing well isn't worth doing at all. However Daniel is not wrong too. What I mean is this: it takes effort to do a thing right, well, wrong, or badly. It takes no effort to not do a thing. In order to do a thing right or well one will screw it up a lot and may do it wrong 600 ways before doing it right once and well thereafter. Knowing that 99% of things do not hit on the thing the first time the question to ask is, is doing this thing worth the effort to do it well? If yes, it is worth doing, if no, you are better to find a thing that is worth 100% of your effort.
