Transmission Range Sensor Replacement - Ford - E350 - RV Transmission 🚨

  • In this video, we are replacing the Transmission Range Sensor (AKA Neutral Safety Switch) on our 1994 Tioga Motorhome with a Ford E350 chassis. WE ARE NOT MECHANICS.
    After spending a month on the road with what seemed to be a bad transmission crossing the country and back. We sometimes could not go any faster than 30 or 40 MPH unless we got that downhill wind. We stopped at a Ford repair center and visited a couple other mechanics at home and none of them thought to check the sensor.
    We almost spent the money to rebuild the transmission but after some more in-depth research, we found that it may be the sensor. So for short money and a couple hours of time, we have fixed our problem. There has been no issue with the transmission since.
    This is a DIY video, we are not mechanics or auto repair facilities. Do your own research first.

    God damn. I've been searching for the cause of my transmission's defects before going into the transmission itself. It does the same thing yours did. I've began experiencing this around the beginning of summer. The most I've had my 7.5l gas guzzler rev up was 5 thousand RPM, scared the shit out of me. I was coming home from a long day's work for Lucas Cattle Company and I put it in cruise control and was listening to music on volume 15. Volume 15 is loud enough, and I could hear my engine over the music. Quick thinking, I hit the breaks to take it out of cruise control so it'd stop rising and it'd fall back down before going into gear. I've burned a lot more fuel than necessary within the past few months, which pisses me off. Talked to a mechanic and he said it could be this, thank you for verifying that this is the problem. I've already did a fluid change and put a new filter, gasket, and fluid. It used to shift out about 8-22 times a day before then. Got it down to around 5-12. Did a solenoid change, that lowered it but then it raised back up to around 8 times a day at the max. I've dumped a lot of money into it and I plan to take and sell some of the parts I've bought. Thank you.

    I don’t know if anyone mentioned it but you do not need to remove the linkage from the cable. Just undo the one large nut and the whole bracket and cable will come off the sensor.

      Jay n Jazz okay thanks for the reply mine on my 97 was flashing and when we pulled the codes it had a P1728 and a P0708 which the P1728 was a slip in the transmission and the P0708 was the Transmission range sensor high Voltage output. I had a flashing O/D light when all that started so I replaced the range sensor and cleared the codes just drove it about 60 miles and it seems to be doing good now. Not saying every flashing O/D light can be fixed with the TR sensor but it’s worth a shot. Great video by the way really helped me out 👌🏻👍🏻.

      @alongthewayjj  Před 4 lety +2

      Awesome! So glad you got it figured out. Ours never popped any codes but the transmission would slip a lot. We spent a month on the road and lots of time not being able to go more than 30 or 40 MPH. We even went to a dealership and they checked it out real quick and had no idea and we spoke to a couple mechanics back home and was almost ready t pay $3000 to rebuild the transmission before I researched it more to find the sensor. $50 and time to fix is a heck of a lot better than $3000 . 😀😀

    check the main nut that he put a washer on. before tearing apart put in neutral with the engine running after you block all tires and parking break #1if tires turning its partially out of gear and in drive /neutral. block all rear tires pull parking brake jack driver side up. when in neutral wheels should not move if they do the pointer on the neutral safety switch and theres one on the bolt or cable or move the cablelinkage youll here it shift make sure it in neutral go check it dont be lazy being lazy get you killed. work smart if done
    properly that part will last you the life of the car mine got wet and the electrical malfunctioned. so i unplugged it sprayed with contact cleaner and air hosed it real good both terminals female and male. then i covered the electrical wires connections with silicone on the outside plug also the plug doesnt snap on all the time make sure it is on or it will come off and car will not start. i saved 250.00 $ check the main nut and electrical connector.

    couldn't you have left the ball socket on the link arm and just took the big nut off. This piece of shit 2005 Ford Focus transmission range sensor does not have alignment marks. So guess I have to mark the old one and try to get the new one in the same position. Heard someone say you can put it in neutral and turn the sensor until the back up lights come on and it is properly aligned. Not sure because people talk out their ass so much these days.

      @@alongthewayjj I read that you can put lever in Park snug bolts down just tight enough to turn the sensor by hand. Have an assistant hold the key on while you turn the sensor. Tell assistant to turn key off soon as engine turns over. Then tighten bolts and see if it will crank in Park. Then shift to neutral and see if it will crank in neutral. If so it is properly aligned. I have not started taking parts off to get to the sensor. So I don't know if it will be obvious how to line up the new one. But I did notice today that the new one has an extra smaller hole through the sensor body edge by the connector input. I now suspicion that this hole may fit over a pin or something so that it lines up. If not I will try the method that I mentioned. Doing this free for an elderly handicapped neighbor and don't have a manual. So not even sure what all I have to take off. I will start with the breather and hope I don;t have to take the battery out and unbolt the transmission mount with the trans. supported with a jack to get to it. Thanks Zed
