  • After almost two years, my next arrangement of Genshin's city themes is finally here. Inazuma is one of my favorite pieces among the entirety of Genshin's soundtrack, so I put lot of effort into both the arrangement and the performance. Note that this is an arrangement of the full orchestral piece performed by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra that appears in the official soundtrack, not the shorter piano arrangement by Yu-Peng Chen during the 2.0 special program.
Onwards to the analysis! Let's start with the second half, which is loud, flashy, and incredibly difficult. You might recognize climax at 4:36, which closely follows Yu-Peng Chen's arrangement with a fast octave melody paired with a monstrously tricky left hand accompaniment. The preceding section is filled with large jumps between three voices, while the one after is minefield of fast scales and trills which become so much harder to voice properly when already tired.
But while not as technically demanding, I think the the first half is more musically interesting and allows for far greater expressivity. Even with just the opening flourish, I spent several practice sessions-worth exploring the ways it could be played. One outcome I've not seen elsewhere is the decision to not emphasize the first note (although to be fair most arrangements don't play this opening at all). It's just one note, but it makes the beginning feel so much more delicate and introspective.
I'm quite proud of the left hand countermelodies. With the main melody being relatively simple and consisting of many long notes, these instead allow the performer to truly give life to the piece. For example, notice the slight variation between notes at 0:26, or the articulation at 0:55 (which could be even more dramatic), or the way the left hand grows and dies down at 3:09. These nuances are what bring out the inner turmoil and sadness, but also the beauty, contained within Inazuma.
I won't pretend that this is a clean performance - you can listen for yourself the many missed and accidental notes. And despite all my talk of musicality there's still plenty of missed opportunities for even more beautiful shapes, on top of blatant errors in phrasing and voicing and whatnot. The stopping point came when I felt like I understood what was necessary for my ideal recording, and that further improvements would simply be a matter of execution.
Thank you for reading this far. This has been a very rewarding video to make, and so I hope you enjoyed it as well! Next up: Sumeru?

(No annotated version for now because the file size is ridiculous for a 10-page PDF. If you really want it leave a comment and I'll see if I can find a way to shrink it.)

Very expressive dynamics, nailed my favourite part at 3:52 with those accents
