Bros, Quit Telling Women How to Lift

  • I posted this on Instagram several months ago and wanted to share it here on CZcams. This needs to stop. If women want to only train their glutes, that’s their prerogative. Bros, quit telling women how they should train, quit giving unsolicited advice, quit giving out wrong advice, and quit having double standards. It’s arrogant and annoying.

Oh my god this literally just happened to me today! I was doing bulgarian split squats with a glute focus and a guy approached me and said the exercise was useless for growing the glutes, that I should just squat. I felt very self-conscious and stopped doing the exercise all together…this video encouraged me to react differently next time

That’s crazy. Bulgarian split squats are way more effective for glute growth. I do both, but the Bulgarians definitely changed my glutes 👌🏼

I wear headphones in the gym, obvious large ones, I can perfectly hear everything around me, but if someone starts giving unsolicited advice I just point at my headphones and say "I can't hear you" and look away. If they continue I hold up my palm and say "I am concentrating, please don't interrupt me" Has worked like a charm so far. Do not engage and they will have no way to progress.

Finally!! A man at the gym literally told me "abduction exercises are useless" "just do squats". I asked him what he does for glutes, and he said he doesn't train glutes. In fact, the ONLY leg exercise he does is the occasional squat session once a month. For so long in the gym I've only done band or abduction exercises when it's quiet and when men aren't around, purely out of fear of men judging me. Men want a girl with a big bum, but bash women by saying "women only train legs and glutes". Misogyny at it's finest. What they really mean is "I want a girl who is born perfect", as women are expected to be godly, flawless, maternal beings, disregarding the fact that women are just as human as them. To compliment this, I have seen women ask for upper body exercise advice from men several times, and not ever has the woman then told the man that the exercise they're doing is wrong or useless. Women deserve to take up space in the gym just as much as men do.
Add in the fact that women who have given birth typically get the "mum butt", which is a natural part of the pregnancy and postpartum body, but then get called flabby when their body doesn't return to how it was pre-pregnancy within a few months. So "dad bods" are acceptable (even though they didn't even grow the baby) but the body of a woman who has grown an entire human from scratch isn't? Make it make sense.

@@WGAGENCY why are you in these comments harassing women for their opinion MY God you are LITERALLY mansplaining us about how to deal with a very real problem that YOU clearly have never experienced. Why is it so hard for males, ESPEICALLY YT one’s to understand that just bc you didn’t experience it doesn’t make it invalid 🤯🤯🤯

    • @WGAGENCY
      @WGAGENCY Před 11 měsíci +1

@@siobhanbonnie your misandry is showing. She wants bigger glutes, she thought the best way to get there is by doing those exercises she mentioned. The man that gave her simple and most importantly CORRECT advice is saving her time, and potential frustration of wondering why her glutes aren't growing the way she wants them to. On the opposite end of that spectrum, if she takes his advice she will see the results, be happy, and be more likely to be consistent because she is getting that positive reinforcement. If she is being "harassed" by dudes at the gym then obviously that's not right... but what she described, any reasonable person would be appreciative of that information. You taking the former or the latter? You want women to get the results they want right? It's fine to have an opinion.. but don't paint a person in such a light for telling you the correct information that will help you reach your goals. You're a trainer, you should know the amount of bs they feed these women.

Exactly. I was getting a program from a trainer and had him add in abductors and cable kickbacks. Also.....the best butt I have had in my life was pilates. I am glad I found his videos, as YT is increasingly useless.

Even indirectly there's often the assumption that "girly" fitness or women's fitness is not as serious or worthwhile. Men don't take it seriously until men start talking about it (using bands, stretching or yoga, glute focus etc). Part of the reason women can have a hard time getting started, they don't feel like they fit in at the gym or should take themselves seriously

I am an 80 year old male that has gone back to the gym to lose the belly and get back in shape. I also wanted to get the glutes back that I used to have, as well as as some shape to the rest of me. I looked up every type of exercise, picked out the ones that I wanted, and set up a 4 day workout schedule. I don't know how many of your videos that I have watched to know what glute exercises to do and how to do them properly. I watched you with Marie Wold, Lucy Davis, Hanna Oberg, Dannibelle and others on the glute bridge, scoop thrust, hinged thrust, with and without bands and even the American thrust. Yesterday, at my gym, there were two young girls doing the hip thrust, where the bench was too high, they had the middle of their back against the edge, using a heavy weight, had a narrow stance and kept arching their back, all the while looking at their phone on some site, showing them how to do it. Being who I am, I went over to them and asked them if I could give them a couple of pointer, which they agreed to. The first thing I asked them is if they knew who Bret Contreras was, which they said no, so I showed them a google search of you, which showed that you were the inventor of the hip thrust, and told them to look you up to verify what I was suggesting they do, so as not to do any back or muscle strain. Was I wrong?

The woman they corrected is a certified professional trainer and she gave them an ear full. And my glutes lost some fullness an strength. Squats are similar to deadlifts for women. They have too fatiguing relative to the stimulus to the glutes for women trying to grow their glutes disproportionately, kind of like how chinups won't grow biceps disproportionately. I personally have great biceps, and all I do is weighted chinups and other compound pulls (flexing the elbow and shoulder). I think curls and disproportionately growing biceps is stupid and bad-looking, but bikini judges and society valie disproportionately large glutes and delts on women. Also, I don't understand why everyone hates on the fact that hip thrusts are easier at the bottom. Rows are easier at the lengthened position, too, so we make them harder in that position by making them heavier.

Plus, aren't hip thrusts lengthened partials? A full backbend wheel pose is the fully contracted position. The angle of my hip is probably about 45 degrees at the bottom.

Ive been lifting for 22 years and I still get thrown off my axis when a bro breaks my focus and my rhythm with a lead-in like, “Can I give you some advice?” For weeks, I have to dig deep psychologically to go to the gym-which is normally a sanctuary -because I know the bro will be there. The thing I love about the gym is the freedom I feel when my mind stops because my body is working so hard, and these bros just add another layer I have to push through to get there.

Yes! Yes yes. Similarly, I lost 150 lbs. thru exercise and nutrition, and kept it off, almost 20 years ago. To this day, I am not skinny, I have excess skin, etc. However, I know I am in the extremely small percentage of people who’ve maintained this kind of massive weight loss without drugs or surgery. When I get unsolicited advice in the gym, it always comes from men, it always pertains to my “body fat” (which is mostly loose skin), and always assumes that I am clueless. It happens so often that I stopped even trying to explain myself.

Throwback to years of dedicated workouts, followed by a 12-year hiatus, and here I am, back in the game over the past month! 🏋‍♂ A humorous yet poignant comment from years ago made me realize that despite my overall fitness, I had overlooked one crucial area - my glutes. Back then, even the tightest belt couldn’t prevent my pants from sagging. 🙈
Fast forward to today, I’ve incorporated a variety of glute exercises into my routine. This morning’s session included hip thrusts, and I couldn’t help but notice a few glances coming my way. Initially, I chalked it up to my tall and slender frame, but now I’m wondering if I might just be breaking some gym stereotypes by being one of the few men openly focusing on glute development. 🤔
Regardless of whether it’s curiosity about my routine or scrutiny of my technique, I’m all in. After all, strong glutes are not just for show - they’re key to overall strength, stability, and, let’s be honest, holding up those pants without relying on a belt. Here’s to building strength, defying stereotypes, and embracing the journey! 💪

I wonder if there is any way to prove these arguments using statistical methods. I'm sure using just a comment section as proof to these arguments would be just setting yourself up for failure for the true nature of the problem. Many people don't respond to surveys and if we only count the people responding to surveys wouldn't that be biased to a small subset of the population in the first place?
I'm thinking what you could do is try to set up microphones in gyms around colleges and analyze what is being said between men and women, and see how many times a man explained an exercise incorrectly to a woman and vice versa. In order to determine if the exercise is being done correctly you could put together a small board of certifies exercise physiologists from different colleges across the country to make a hard determination , yes or no, this was a time when an explanation was incorrectly given for an exercise. It may also be interesting to do these same exact experiments in public gyms across the country.
Some issues you may run into are gyms not accepting these microphones in gyms because of privacy issues. Another issue determining how to find this entire experiment. Probably more issues but I'll let the comment section hash those out.
Anyways I gave some rough outlines on trying to get an answer closer to the truth other than the opinion of one person, hopefully this methodology can be further hashed out so the experiment can be run. Thanks for reading until the end :)

I competed in bodybuilding 1992-94 when there was no high heel, bikini, figure, etc class so I trained everything and men always wanted to advise me until they saw me squatting 100kg 20 times. ( and I was only 52 kg) I still strength train and as a menopausal woman in my 60s who is super active, the need for muscle mass and bone density overrides a perky butt. Obviously, it is up to the woman to decide her goals, but my words of wisdom, if they want to keep GOOD quality of life and independence, is not to skip the upper body. I've been fortunate not to have experienced too much outright "mansplaining" in my life (even way back in my younger years when I was the only teenage girl on the free weight side at Bally Total Fitness, lol). But one thing that has irked me in the past is if I'm in a casual group conversation about fitness - someone might ask me a question about training form, progression, etc., and sometimes a male will hijack the conversation and steamroll my answer, even when they know I do this FOR A LIVING and have dedicated much of my life to studying exercise science.
However, on a positive note with the topic of males/females, I get such great joy out of introducing the men I coach & train to hip thrusts, band work, etc. I've been fortunate that every male client I've ever had has been respectful and reasonably open-minded. They always underestimate bands and it always blows their mind 😅 My gym is loving your methods, Bret, and I've got some men reporting their wives are giving their glutes a double take 🍑 Thank you for all you do in sharing your knowledge! 👊
