"You can only fit so many words in a postcard Only so many in a phone call Only so many into space Before you forget that words are sometimes used for things other than filling emptiness."
Long distance relationships.. They can be beautiful, but super hard sometimes. This poem is beautiful just like all of Sarah Kay's poems. Love how her voice doesn't just say the words but brings them to life.
"Instead of holding your head to my chest, I tell you about the boy who lives downstairs from me, and stays up all night long practicing his drumset...instead of holding my hand, you tell me about the sandwich you ate for lunch today, how the pickles fit so perfectly with the lettuce." Oh my gosh. Instant tears.
As most people have stated already it is so difficult listening to this while in a long distance relationship. It makes me think about where we are at now and worry about where we might be in the future. I'm already so invested and I do not wish to think of defeat I may face in the future but I can not ignore that thought while listening to this.
"Still now, I send letters into space hoping that some mailman somewhere will track you down and recognize you from the description in my poems, that he will place the stack of them in your hands and tell you 'There is a girl who still writes you...she doesn't know how not to.'" my favorite line ever
i was just recently in a long distance relationship for two years... to find out later that that person does not feel the same for me... it hurts, it really does hurt. this poem says exactly how i feel... but i know i can be strong, and anyone in this situation, you can be strong too. yes it hurts to fall and get a cut, but that wound will heal over time and maybe there will be a scar. that scar will remind you not to fall again as before. i really love this...
Is there a word for that sucker-punched feeling one gets when someone just very casually utters the most profound line you've ever heard? That last whoosh of air at the end should have been that word. Beautiful.
I've heard this poem before, but what makes this video so great is the fact that you can hear the reactions of the audience so well. Sarah makes magic with words and she touches your heart with every syllable
The last line of her poems always make me choke up, somehow. Every time. It doesn't hit me full on until that last line, because it's always so perfect.
Nice poem. I felt sad when I watched this. I also have a long distance relationship. A Long distance relationship is hard because we are not being able to be with each other everyday, but if we have the strong love for each other. It still doesn't matter.
You don't get any closer. Still now I send letters to space hoping that some mailman someplace tracks you down and recognizes you from the description my palms that will complete the stack in your hands and tell you there's a girl who still likes she doesn't know how to . Breath taking!!! Made me tear ;(
"Instead of holding my hand, you tell me about the sandwich you ate for lunch today. How the pickles fit so perfectly with the lettuce." So freaking relevant..
@normanbull its not that the can't work out. it's that far too often out of sight is out of mind and not being able to be with that person makes the relationship harder.. only with less of what makes the relationship good because you're not entirely together
..unless of course that was a metaphor... (still hanging on that cliff at the waters edge of the shipwreck bay poem watching these young bloods with driftwood bats smash rocks out into the water.. ⚾️ 🧢 🏏
@normanbull Gay is not a derogatory term. (: Sometimes people are meant for each other, but the time/place/situation isn't meant for the people, you know?
I can relate...One of my poems poetry susan mclean woodburn....hope you enjoy!. "A Stirring Of The Heart" A Kinder Place To be. These moments send me To a new place In my heart The wow of it explodes like fireworks of love And utter contentment Shattering all past perceptions That niggled and are now erased from memory A kinder place to be. +магжан Сыдыков Here you go :) I had already fallen in love with far too many postage stamps When you appeared on my doorstep wearing nothing but a postcard promise - No, appear, is the wrong word… Is there a word for sucker punching someone in the heart? Is there a word for when you’re sitting at a bottom of a rollercoaster And you realize that the climb is coming And you know what the climb means And you can already feel the flip in your stomach from the fall before you even moved? Is there a word for that? There should be. You can only fit so many words in a postcard Only so many in a phone call Only so many into space Before you forget that words are sometimes used for things other than filling emptiness. It’s hard to build a body out of words. I have tried. We have both… tried. Instead of… holding your head to my chest I tell you about the boy who lives downstairs from me Who stays up all night long practicing his drumset. And neighbours have complained… they have busy days tomorrow, But he keeps on thumping through the night Convinced, I think, that practice makes perfect. Instead of holding my hand You tell me about the sandwich you ate for lunch today. How the pickles sit so perfectly with the lettuce. Practice does not make perfect. Practice makes permanent. Repeat the same mistakes over and over. You don’t get any closer to Carnegie Hall.. even I know that. Repeat the same mistakes over and over. You don’t get any closer. You never get any closer. Is there a word for the moment you win tug of war When the weight gives And all that extra rope comes hurtling towards you? How even though you’ve won You still wind up with muddy knees and burns on your hands? Is there a word for that? I wish there was. I want to say it When we’re finally together on your couch And neither one of us with anything left to say. Still now, I send letters into space Hoping that some mailman somewhere will track you down And recognize you from the description in my poems, And he will place a stack of them in your hands and tells you, “There is a girl who still writes you She doesn’t know… how not to.”
it's a spoken word thing. instead of clapping, they would snap. I think it comes from way back when gatherings were forbidden...in certain countries...? so they would snap because it was more discrete. Idk, someone back me up on this?
@normanbull ..your optimism on relationships would be almost inspiring if not for the randomly thrown in sexual preference that i think you were trying to use as an insult
"There is a girl who still writes you,she doesn't know how not to.." *sigh* Beautiful!
to the dude at the end that goes "ohhh" when that last line finally hits, I was right there with you my man
There's so much expression and emotion in here voice yet she is so softly spoken. Wonderfully talented - a grand poet!
"You can only fit so many words in a postcard
Only so many in a phone call
Only so many into space

so important
My absolute favorite, gets me every time. "There is a girl out there that still writes you, because she doesn't know how not too" ♡

Did anyone hear that sigh at the very end? It describes quite perfectly how I feel about this piece, (It's a good thing.)
i just love how the audience reacts in spoken word- it's satisfaction is slightly hilarious

my favorite line ever
It's come to the point where I can now recite this perfectly because I've watched it so many times.

Very well said

Same here. You should look up "Joshua Bennett - Long Distance Relationships (Transatlantic Love Manifesto)". It's good too.
"Instead of holding my hand, you tell me about the sandwich you ate for lunch today. How the pickles fit so perfectly with the lettuce." So freaking relevant..
wooooooow
Well, that hit amazingly close to home.
u rmy inspiration
So many snaps.
Great poem
She doesnt know how not to. (my heart) :')
... And sometimes it's not worth it, just as all relationships are sometimes worth and sometimes not worth the challenge. :)
wow....."practice makes permanent"
I understand this too much
wow that's deep...'' Does practice make perfect or permanent?'' ..????
@normanbull its not that the can't work out. it's that far too often out of sight is out of mind and not being able to be with that person makes the relationship harder.. only with less of what makes the relationship good because you're not entirely together

"There is a girl that still writes you, she doesn't know how not to." Curse of Mercury in Gemini. I know it well.
Being in a long distance relationship is a big mistake .. I've been in one .

i dont get the snaping thing..anyone?
Could someone please write down the whole piece? It is a little difficult to catch all the words as English is not my native language.
here's a link to a Tumblr page dedicated to her poetry. Several of her poems are posted here ohsarahkay.tumblr.com/
Katie Arriaga search "postcard by sarah kay" and it'll give you the clearer version.
Support New Artist.....Quant'em as I try to leave my mark on the rapping and spoken word game....feedback is crucial and vital
So i'm trying to figure out what happens in the end of this poem? Do they break up?
The person who says “currently in it” sounds like Phil 🤔
Please, guys. Can anybody write down the poem I'm just can't make out what she says. Thanks in advance.

+магжан Сыдыков ahah I performed this poem a long time ago and I've recently been watching t o o much slam poetry! so I thought I'd share the joy xx
