After replacing several panels of my fence I wanted to protect it from the elements a bit. The fence is about 8-10 years old but it looks more like 20 years old according to one expert I had look at it. This is mainly thanks to the fact that it has never been treated.
So the first step is stripping off anything thing has grown on the fence along with any surface layers of age. From there, you need to pressure wash the outside to remove any damage. The spray on your finish. And that's it. Simple and easy and I completed the entire fence from beginning to end for under $300.
I decided to spray my stain/finish on because it was significantly faster than doing it by hand. I spend more time refilling my sprayer than I did actually spraying. From start to finish, my fence makeover took a couple of hours of work.
There is hope for my fence after all.. Thank you for the upload and the info.
You are most welcome.
Thanks for making this video. Looking to do the same thing. Good Tips 👍
Thanks. It's not perfect but 2+ years later it still looks great. I learned a lot.
I have a fence with 2 rails and galvanized cattle panels. Would the stain stick to the metal? Do i need to mask it?
It will stick to metal, so you will need to mask it.
After spraying, follow up with a roller to get rid of runs and drips before they have a chance to dry.
Also, pool chlorine is stronger and cheaper in the long run. Get it in refillable jugs from your local pool supply dealer.
Thanks for the info. I still have a run of fence to finish on the other side of the house. I’ll try this out when I do it.
Do you mix the pool chlorine with the same ratio as regular chlorine?
@@kevinlillquist141 I would start with 1 part pool chlorine to 3 parts water. Do a small area and give it about 10 minutes to work. If the results are not satisfactory, add more chlorine to the sprayer. The absolute max I would go is 50/50, but that's under extreme conditions. Try to avoid doing this on a windy day. That stuff will burn your eyes.
You should back brush for a even finish on wood fences
Thank you. Is “power washing” after the bleach step necessary? Does that get the green algae off after the bleach step? Thanks
There was a significant difference in pre vs post washing. The second wash removes all of the algae, the bleach kills it. I would also guess that bleach and stain are not a great mix.
@@NathanNagele thank you so much and great video. Thanks
Did you do 2 coats as behr finish instructions say?
I did. And it still looks great today.
Where did you get that power washer nozzle for hose... thanks
Got it on Amazon: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013646334/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Looks great... Thanks for sharing...
Thanks for watching
Nice job.. curious what neighbors side looks like after staining? Any drips? Thank you
There was nothing that came through on their side.
@@NathanNagele great, I was worried when I do mine it will seep through
Not a bad job....I would have used a bigger spray fan for the flat, close fencing, But i have equipment. For the homeowner, that Von huas unit you got there, is the best I've used. More pressure= more even fan....not sure how you powerwashed off the bleach, but that might tie in with the uneven areas too. These weathered fences, I go back about an hour later for a 2nd p- wash- youd be amazed how that can even out the final stain...Overall an excellent job!!
Thanks for the suggestion.
Are you saying that you go back over it again with a bleach/water wash again?
@@bodeine454 no more bleach, just water. The goal is to even out the whole area. Especially very old fencing/ decking.
@@oreokookie1000 Ok, good to know, thank you!
Thanks for this.
No problem.
Is the bleach step necessary? I was thinking of just staining over whatever was originally on my fence.
Not sure but it got rid of the stuff growing on the fence so that the stain could get to the wood.
Hey what is the name of the stain application pump ?
It’s a 2 gallon pump sprayer that I got at Home Depot. The brand is HDX.
Fence looks great! Would any paint sprayer work? Or is this specific for stain?
I didn’t use anything special for stain. Stain sprays pretty easy because it’s so thin.
To help get an even coat do a small section then go over it with a brush to get rid of the light/dark areas
Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll try that next time.
What about the overspray on your neighbor’s white fence?
I cleaned it off.
How long did you have to wait after you bleached before you started to power wash?
I did my whole fence and by the time I was done doing that, I went and washed it off. It prob sat on there for a half hour or so.
@@NathanNagele thank you
how long should you leave the bleach on the fence before pressure washing it off?
I left it on for 15 minutes or so. It will vary depending on the level of stuff on your fence. Just do a small test area to see what works for your fence.
@@NathanNagele thanks
How many gallons of stain did it take for how much footage of fence?
I used less than two gallons of stain and had two coats. I haven't measured the fence, but I'd estimate it about 300 feet or so.
It looks beautiful. Thank you.
I’m pretty happy with it. There are some things I would’ve done differently, but overall, it breathed new life into my fence. Thanks for watching!
is the behr stain still holding up today? i have always used oil based in the past but the water based is so much cheaper. im still a bit leary of laying it on a customers fence but i see it has a 10 yr lifetime now.
Still looks great to me. I made a stop table and benches and they are also stained with it and they look great as well. Water still beads up on the horizontal surfaces. I’ve been very happy.
You all prolly dont give a damn but does anyone know a method to get back into an Instagram account?
I was dumb lost the login password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me
@Merrick Yusuf instablaster =)
@Seth Noah thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and im trying it out atm.
I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Seth Noah It worked and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thank you so much you saved my account !
Can you use the cheap pump sprayer to apply the stain and then go back and brush?
I don’t see why not.
Tried it... Very messy! You will still need to brush.
I assume you don’t go into the neighbors yard to do the other side. Does having only one side sealed alter the wood?
I did not do anything on the neighbors side because they didn’t want me to. There hasn’t really been anything that’s happened to the wood on the treated vs untreated sides. My side just looks nicer.
How long after bleaching did you power wash?
I only let it sit for a few minutes. Baically when I did the whole fence, I came back and washed it down immediately after.
You got overspray all over that white wall. Please tell me that isn’t your neighbors 😂
I cleaned it off before it dried. No harm.
A stain brush after spraying might help with the drip and uneven appearance
Yeah, I wish I had done that at the time. Live and learn.
@@NathanNagele I apologize for not reading the comments. It appear others mentioned it. Have a great day!
how long does it take to dry?
It was dry to the touch in about an hour or so. Really depends on the humidity.
Back brush and use goof proof Ready Seal (won't have the evenness problem)
Or Wood Defender.
Looks great, was that an oil based or water based stain?
It’s water based. I try to stay away from oil based stuff bc it takes too long to dry and is harder to clean up.
Where did you get that hose attachment from?

@@NathanNagele Perfect. Thanks for the fast reply!!!

Bleach breaks down the lignins in the wood. Use a peroxide based cleaner for algae and mildew; although if you have a real pressure washer you don't need to do that either, just pressure wash and the stain will kill any residual stuff
I just subscribed to your channel I’m looking for good ideas and tips 👍
Thanks for subbing!
Thank you 😊

What's the name of the orange sprayer you used?

@@NathanNagele thank you for the question and the answer! shit load of good reviews online.
What is that “power wash” tip called?
I got it on Amazon. It’s called “Aqua Joe SJI-4BHNC Ultimate Solid Brass, Heavy Duty Adjustable Twist Nozzle”
I have 200 liner feet.... how much will it cost for both sides to stain???😳
Depends on the stain that you use but in material costs I would guess it would be about $150-$200.
@@NathanNagele at home depot the cheapest stain gallon is $50.00 and I covered 8 linear feet both sides. I need a cheaper alternative 🛒
Wait for a sale or look at deck stain and sealer. You can usually find that for $35ish a gallon.
You can also buy 5 gallon bucks for ~$90
Ready Seal may be a good alternative if you like oil based stains. A little messy but will last more than two years.
Thanks bro
No problem.
What? You couldn't show how you sprayed it?
It’s a two handed operation and I didn’t wa t to risk stain getting on my camera.
@@NathanNagele TRI-POD
Lot of waste I would have thought? I'm half through ten panels from " packing case brown" to " forest green" and a long haired mini roller on a long handle ( like for behind radiators) plus a follow up brush seems quite quick and all the stain goes on the wood not into the air.
PS. I finished that side and very pleased with it- trouble is
I need to start the other side now!
The waste surprisingly isn’t too bad. Depending on your sprayer, you can get pretty close and really control exactly where it goes on.
You should do defloss the doohickey for a better hossenfeffer duhh... I'm already a pro, but I like to watch how-to videos to critique people so I can feel awesomer😁
You do you.
@@NathanNagele I think MM was making fun of other "experts" criticizing your video.
I'm not an English speaker .. so forgive me ... but i keep hear .. getting rid of oxidation.... as far as I know wood doesn't oxidase I wonder if he knows that ..
Yes. Yes it does.
I mean you got paint all over that white vans bro
A simple wipe down when done and it's all gone.
you should back brush it
Yup. Live and learn.
Won't that over spray bleach solution harm the neighbors vegetation?
It gets sprayed down with a hose afterward to dilute it so that it doesn't harm the plants.
First.
Chlorine works better than bleach.
not a comprehensive video, doesn't show actual spraying
I only have two hands.
You seriously didn't even bother to move your firewood out of the way? You lost all credibility after I saw that.
Didn’t see the point. That area of the fence is getting replaced this summer. Just wanted the visible parts to match in the mean time.
The bleach removed all the green? Could have sworn I still saw lots of green, clown.
Putting the bleach on was to kill it. The green was gone after power washing.
