How to Fix Trackpad on Macbook Pro

  • In this video I show you how to fix your trackpad on your Macbook if the click is not working. I also explain why the click fails over time. Most of the time it is wear and tear on the button underneath the trackpad that causes the malfunction. This repair will work on Macbook Pro or Air with a silver trackpad. It won't work on newer macs (2015 and newer) with ForceTouch.

I hope you take a great deal of comfort in knowing that a little old lady, (70) stuck in the house due to covid was able to fix her trackpad in her 2011 Macbook Pro. I lost a few teeny screws along the way, but I was able to get it pretty much back together and it actually works. I don't know how long it will work, but at least I can now retrieve information that I really needed. YOU ARE A GENIUS! THANKS SO VERY MUCH.

This worked! Although I had to add some extra steps. I did it exactly as you suggested, but it didn’t work at first. Then I started the process again, but this time I cleaned the golden circle on the trackpad, the silver circle that you take out from the trackpad, and the contact or silver circle on the chassis of the computer with alcohol on a cotton swab. After doing this, it’s working again like a charm.
You are a life saver, thanks a lot!
PSA: I damaged one of the screws by trying to take it out with a bigger screwdriver than the one required. Taking it out afterward was a nightmare, so please, everyone, be careful with this if you don’t want to damage the computer screws.

Worked!!! I have tried two trackpads off ebay to repair my late 2008-early 2009 macbook pro. Both replacements left me without the ability to click, or to click and drag, or to click and drag to highlight. I used a razor blade to pull up the button and move it slightly down and to the left and it works perfectly now. I had to use another video with steps to remove my trackpad since it is a different model but the removal of the button to move it is the same. So much frustration and many hours of troubleshooting and reading forums. If only I had found your video first!! Thank you, thank you, thank you so much.

Cannot say thank you enough. My mid-2012 15" was acting up again. I had replaced the trackpad around 1-1/2 years ago, and was not going to bother changing again, I was going to start shopping for a "new to me" refurbished MacBook Pro. Followed your steps, cleaned a bit of green corrosion of the button and the trackpad, slightly offset the button, and things are working smooth again.

Good video. It would be worth mentioning that the trackpad can also malfunction if the MBP battery below it is beginning to swell. I did the repair described here, to no effect so bought a new trackpad, which still didn't work properly because of the battery problem I hadn't suspected. A pity because changing the battery would likely have solved the problem straight out.

Fantastic video. Professionally done, very clear explanations, and it partially solved my problem. I ended up having to back the click adjustment screw all the way until it didn't click, then minutely adjusted it tighter until the moment...it worked! I also found what looked like some kind of oxidization, which I scraped off. That did the trick! Thanks for this.

Awesome to hear that you got it fixed! I’m glad sharing what the underlying problem is helped you. A lot of people seem to recommend cleaning or adjusting the screw. But most times it is the wear and tear on those contact points so moving it over a little will do the trick. Tightening the adjustment screw may work (for a time) but it is not dealing with the underlying issue, the worn down contact points.

BEFORE DISASSEMBLY: On the trackpad back middle bottom there is a large tri-wing screw used to adjust the travel of the pad as you press to activate the button. That screw does become lose with age and many pressings of the pad. I adjusted that first to see if that would suffice to resolve the contact problem. It worked this time! I then sealed the adjusting screw with clear tape, in case it becomes lose.

    • @FrugalRepair
      @FrugalRepair  Před 4 lety +2

Making a change to the adjustment screw works because it is putting more pressure on the button on the trackpad (giving just a little more metal-metal contact when the trackpad is depressed for a click). It doesn't take care of the underlying issue. The wear and tear on the metal contact points still exists which is why I recommend what I do in the video.

Thanks for the vid. Can I just add what my solution was without opening the back of my Macbook Air. Only the right click was working, no matter what I tried - even using an external mouse - it didn't work. I looked this problem up and found out that sometimes a bluetooth connected device like a magic trackpad can suddenly interfere with the trackpad on the laptop. Turned out there was a bluetooth connected apple mouse hidden in some drawer that was still switched on. I turned it off and problem solved. You can also try turning off the bluetooth on you laptop and see if that works!

just found your video and channel, while looking to fix this same issue, am looking forward to getting the toolkit, magnet, and optical, I love to solve this things, and this always blows my naysayer friends minds, when I fix the unfixable, or change the computers passwords, as they fancy themselves such learned genuises, when I just go to a how to fix, or how to change vid, and get the job done

IMPORTANT NOTE! Sometimes when the battery is old or has overheated it will expand under the track pad and consequently restrict the movement of the track pad up & down or not able to click. Once you remove the battery and see that the back of it has expanded it's time to replace that battery ASAP. New batteries arrive flat and will not restrict the clicking of the track pad. Amazon stocks a lot of them. :)

After reading the comments, I read that some people were just pushing down on the trackpad and putting alcohol along the edge and dried on cool with a hair dryer. It worked!!!! I am so happy! No need to take it apart for me. (My spill was not big, only a few drops)

EDIT: I leave the previous comment just in case someone has the same issue. I just screwed a bit the hex screw under the trackpad to "tight it" a bit more. Now it works perfectly.
Thank you so much for you tutorial, so far the most useful I found.
    -----------
Hi! I have done everything as described. The only problem is that after i put the battery, if the screen is down and the bottom part is up, i can feel a nice "click", but once the bottom part goes down, it doesn't do any click. It's like if the trackpad doesn't "bounce" after it was pressed. Do you have any idea what it could be?

Thanks very much for this video. My laptop is a slightly different model with some small differences inside, such as 3 screws for the battery, and the trackpad connection to the logic board is covered up by the RAM slots, so I had to disconnect the trackpad with the very thin connector. But otherwise your walkthrough worked great and I really appreciate it. Liked and subscribed!
