For anybody that wonders, to get internet access, delete the item on the desktop called MSN Internet access. It will say it cannot move it to the recycle bit and will permanently deleted. say yes. then start internet Explorer, and a better setup will popup, that actually HAS the option for LAN. Hope this helps someone.

When you said "Getting to the point where we restart" is when my setup finished, and came up with the restart timer. It was so fast. lmao
If you get the error "this program performed an illegal operation..." turn off the vb computer. Go into the settings, go to system, go to acceleration and unchecked "enable nested paging". You will now be able to get to the desktop screen when you start. You will still get an error message but now you can just keep ignoring the error and get to the start screen
12:43 Doesn’t work. After hitting ok an error message appears saying I did something illegal and it just stays on this blank blue screen

It's not even letting me get to the setup screen. It just gets stuck on the very first screen and VirtualBox just aborts the machine.

This video was terrific UNTIL 9:00 when we had to enter the key. You did not specify how to get the key, nor even show how you put yours in. I had to go online and find a random one to get past this screen. Absolutely an inexcusable oversight in an otherwise terrific video.
AND THEN after that and it searches for "plug n play devices" I get an "explorer: this program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down" with "The SHELL32.DLL file is linked to missing exportSHLWAPI.DLL:tFileAttributesA." WHAT IS THIS??? I even did the installation a 2nd time over to get the same error!!! HELP!!!

i have the same error. when loading, i could just spam the close button and it worked, but then it wouldnt get past the cyan screen where it is supposed to load windows. instead i get that same error saying that something is wrong with that file

I got the same error, but around my 3rd-4th time restarting after the error occurred, I just spam clicked close on the pop ups and the error doesn't appear anymore & it just continues with setup.
Also be sure to keep your mouse in the virtual window when setup is happening, otherwise it (kind of) freezes.
After the installation completes, you have to restart the VM and press F8 before Windows boots to enter the safe mode. Then on the desktop, you right click "My Computer", click "Properties" and then go to "Performance" tab. Click on "File System" and go to "Troubleshooting" tab. Now check the item "Disable all 32-bit protected-mode disk drivers", click OK and reboot. Now theses error should not occur anymore.

If you get an error about memory when trying to boot from hard disk the first time, I had set 4gb of memory from a 16gb machine and changing it down to 512mb fixed it.

Sadly I had trouble too so after downloading the zip file you have to extract it and then mount the iso file and then do the thing he did to select the iso file in the storage

For everyone getting the error telling them that they don't have enough memory: Decrease the amount of memory to 512MB. Windows 98 was never designed to use more than 512MB. Using more memory than that requires the use of various patches, or at the very least, changing some system parameters.
Also, don't create a virtual hard drive for it over 127GB. Without patches, that's the largest size drive that Win98 can use. If you create a bigger one, Win98 will end up corrupting the files because it still thinks the drive is only 127GB. Even partitioning the drive into sections of 127GB or less won't work. When you try to use the second partition it will overwrite the files on the first partition.

One thing: Windows 9x support in Virtualbox is kind of crappy, so I would recommend an emulator (e.g. PCem or 86Box) instead of a hypervisor (VMWare, VirtualBox, etc.)

@[EverythingEpan] thanks for the tutorial! I had some issues. When it asks for the first reboot, it crashed but it was because I was using VirtualBox v4.3.22 So then I upgraded to v5.0.20 (latest to date) and it worked perfectly. Now I can finally play old games :3
So I know this video is a bit old but when I am at the win98 startup menu shown at 3:21, I select the first option as told but instead of being able to select a devide I get to a commandline for the "A" directory saying the following: "A:\>". Am I doing something wrong?

Instead of installing an older version of VB, Go to Machine>Settings>System>Acceleration and untick "Enable VT-x/AMD-V".

Windows 95 - I do everything from start to finish but after booting up the VM for the first time, I don't get an option to launch with a CD driver, which basically means I can't continue. I did have a workaround by installing MS-DOS, then Windows 3.1 and installing 95 via the upgrade ISO but I ran into my own set of problems which eventually led to the VM not working anymore at all. 256 colors wouldn't work and I kept getting illegal operations errors.
Windows 98 - Again, I've done everything start to finish but after the setup is done (when it looks for non Plug and Play hardware), I get hit with a SHELL32.dll error and an illegal operation error again.. to which the Setup is completely blank until I restart. When I restart and boot from HDD, it just asks me to login only to be met with the same error and I am unable to continue. This is really frustrating and I genuinely do not know what to do.
Arm had to watch it with closed captions due to arm no available sound. Very arm helpful.

Late reply, but you do realise that its was 18 years ago Windows Me was released, meaning that he could've had that instead of Windows 98. Which means he could be up to 18 years old.
Agh this is painful to watch, so many flaws I don't know where to begin. The first being that Virtual box does not support windows 98 SE, check the official documentation. Anyone wanting to install windows98 for dos / old windows games I would suggest windows 2000 on Virtual box, you will have an easier time.

This tutorial worked, I was glad and happy to relive Windows 98 and many classic Windows games that do not run on Windows 10, especially Petz II and Oddballz. A great nostalgic experience.

This is the reason I can't launch MS-DOS 7.1 and Windows 98 (First&Second Edition).
Every Product key I enter says that it is invalid. Even the ones that worked before.

for those trying the OEM link, it's the Czech one, go to the website and look for the OEM link without a language, and that will be English and it should work (it did for me)

You can do this by installing Virtualbox Guest Additions, but if I remember correctly I do not believe it works for Windows 98. So you would need to take a look at my 256 Colors video to be able to make the screen resolution bigger.
Any chance you could explain or make a tutorial on how to play old win98 games? I tried to follow another tutorial but when it gets to the step of adding a new video driver (I think that's what it's called. I'm so tech impaired) virtualbox won't let me add anything else under "Controller: IDE". I just wanna know how I can add and play old games. Only real reason I wanted to set this up
Yeah virtual machines (more specifficaly pre- Win XP VMs) don't have 3D graphics acceleration, so most 3D games will not work 'cause they'll require acceleration that the virtual machine can't provide.
Got a fun question for you. How do you get the option/setting to have 256 colors? Trying to play an old school game and got it installed, but it won't run since I only have 2 and 16 colors...... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, every time I start up the Windows 98 it doesn't give option of where to load from - instead does to a blank black screen. I've tried pressing F12 and then choosing c) CD-ROM but the same thing happens. I have unticked hardware acceleration options and I am using the latest version of Virtualbox. I'm getting an error after it restarts (the 10:28 restart). The screen goes blue and says something like "Invalid VxD Dynamic link call from 'vrtwd'". If I press Y, windows won't start, it will just stay on black console screen. If I press N, I get thrown back into the "pick your boot" initial screen... what do I do, EverythingEpan?
