I would prefer Rakell and send Smith out. I feel Rakell will be better next season. But who really knows??

Agreed. When Rakell came to the "Burgh, it seemed like he and Sid shared the same mind as he seemed to be in the right spot for a Sid pass. Hopefully, they regain that.

I think he'll probably end up costing even more than Guentzel, but Sam Reinhart seems like he would solve an awful lot of problems for us. And, I'm not saying that the power-play couldn't be fixed without him, but the guy is lethal from the slot, and the left side hash marks. And, if that's not enough for you, 4th in Selke voting. I'm sure that a portion of that is due to playing with Barkov, but Sid Crosby isn't exactly chopped liver. Pulling a big fish like that to fill LW1, assuming DO'C doesn't do it, and I'd prefer if he didn't, means that you're going to have to move out one of Smith or Rakell if you want any sort of cap space. People talk about trading POJ, but I thought we wanted to rebuild the team with good, young players, no? And trading him only frees up $825k. Of course, he does need to be re-signed.
Just think how great you'd look as a GM if you got Guentzel back. You'd be loved in Pittsburgh for a long time.
Youth and a consistent first string goalie
Another place to look at, for a trade, is Vegas...again. They have gotten into cap trouble, again, and have only 897,000 available but still have right free agents to try resigning.
The goal tending is the last thing. They need two 20 goal plus forwards. One being a second line center. They need a LD to play with Karlsson.
They already have a 20 plus goal 2nd line center
they need a player to help Sid...a player to complement Malkin & Bunts + a few players for lines 3 & 4 (hopeful some of the kids can make this jump)
Float Jake a 9.5Mx7
If he signs it, trade Smith to the wild for a pick no retention.
Sign Henrique to a 1 year contract around a 3-3.5M aav

@Milliardo66 look at the current teams left in the playoffs, look at there books. A lot of them are going to lose a lot of those pieces. Look at the penguins last two cups. We had Murray cheap as possible because he was a rookie, kessel Toronto retained salary, so we had him on cheap. Our depth was from the ahl that panned out well, on cheap. After that final cup we couldn't afford anyone. Rutherford instead of realizing hey we need to retool now so in 6 years we aren't in the crapper sold off prospects and picks to attempt more runs. Rutherford replacements did the same. I like Dubas because he gave them until trade deadline to prove they could compete for a cup, thru couldn't, he stopped the bleeding and sold jake to start the serious retool needed. He still has Rutherford and hextalls mistakes that he's got to deal with for a whild.

lets ignore Marner. I think everyone forgets that Dubas was most likely fired because he wanted to trade Marner and Shanny didn't want to do that.

We 💯 need a top line winger. We had a guy that was the perfect fit and let him walk..Jake Guentzel was never the problem. Rust is inconsistent and misses significant time year in and year out. Can't be relied on. Don't need Marner or Zegras. Plus after what happened between Sid and Zegras I don't believe Sid did a big Zegras fan. Maaayybbbeee Stamkos but he's older. If that's the case might as well bring Jake back. We need a top 6 shut down Damn and a top line winger. That's what we need. Also need a healthy Jarry and to stay healthy and a very capable back up just in case

Sid and Geno are not spring chickens..a few years back you could put a sack of potatoes on their line and they would make them look good. Sid is still close to that level. Geno has slipped a bit. The fact is they need a little more help. Rust is a solid player but the fact is he's never played a full season ( he did play 81 once) and he's never put up 30 goals..is he skilled, yes. Does he have the ability to play with Sid and Geno, yes..but is he the answer for Jake Guentzels missing production, no. Rakell will likely have a bounce back year and he could fill a top 6 role. DOC was a great story and maybe he fills a top 6. Bunting was great he fills a top 6. Are those 4 good enough to help get us to the finals or even the playoffs? Probably not. We need help on the wing. That is this teams top priority along with a strong left handed shut down D man

They could definitely use a top 6 left wing to replace Guentzel. But I also wouldn't be opposed to spreading that money around for better depth.
But yes - another defensively minded LHD would be great. I absolutely agree.

Stammer is older but out of all of them mentioned , I would take Stammer .
Over Reinhart, are you crazy? They both have elite sniping ability and would greatly improve the lagging PP, but Reinhart kills penalties too.

Rielly Smith has been linked to Nashville, i’d try to do a 3 way trade to get rid of Jarry, and Smith and somehow bring in Saros. maybe add a pick or low prospect.

Should they not just trade away all their draft picks for the remaining years that Crosby is there? Need NHL proven players now, we don’t have time to develop players and waste Crosby’s last years. Then when Crosby retires we go back to developing players….maybe have a bad year and get a good chance at 1st round pick.
Idk if it’s good that they went on that streak this year and lost this years 1st rd pick (although they would had chance at lottery draft being like 7th worst if they would kept losing), but now they have next years 1st rd pick instead of keeping this years cause deal was if they finished 12th or better they lose this years 1st rd, if they’d finish in bottom 11th or worse they would kept this years and gave up next years.
If they did that, they wouldn't have just one bad year. They would be the Red Wings post Datsyuk and Zetterberg. They are already on that trajectory now.
@SupplementalSense: Yeah post Datsyuk and Zeterberg but not while they were there. It’s a sure thing anyways that Pens will blow when Crosby/Malkin retire. They will have the draft picks starting the year after Crosby retires.
Probably a better thing if they’re horrible for 2 years after Crosby’s gone so they can have chance at winning draft lottery.
I don’t think they’ll be Stanley cup contenders after Crosby till they hit that draft lottery on a good year when a Crosby/McDavid type of player is available. Just my opinion.
