- Nathaniel Townsley plays and talks about the Gloss Natural Renown kit.
Today’s working drummers need a kit that can do it all-and do it well. The newly designed 2016 Gretsch Renown is one of the most versatile drum sets ever made. Now, with one drum set, you can play with the sensitivity and touch to handle the smoothest grooves of the 1950s; the attack and projection required to drive the most powerful compositions of the 60s and 70s; and the clarity and vibrance needed to faithfully reproduce the clean studio sounds of the 80s, 90s and beyond.
Renown still features the classic 7-ply Gretsch formula maple shells, with 30-degree bearing edges and exclusive “Silver Sealer” interiors. But this Renown comes with a new twist with the addition of the Gretsch's player-friendly “302” hoop-the same hoop used on Gretsch's Brooklyn and Broadkaster series drums. Gretsch 302 hoops produce the desirable focused sound like that of a die cast hoop, but are lighter in weight and less rigid, allowing the drum to better “breath” and achieve maximum resonance. The 2016 Renown delivers the traditional Gretsch sound with an incredible open, harmonic tone that supplies the versatility needed to meet the demands of the hardest working drummers.

underrated drummer... look at this sound, touch, feel, groove.... one of my best drummer by far since I've discovered him on a hudson DVD in 2003!
Lol that’s when I first say him dude is dope
i dont mean to be so off topic but does any of you know of a trick to log back into an instagram account?
I was dumb lost the login password. I appreciate any tricks you can give me
@Bobby Vihaan instablaster :)
Now he is what you call "A Great Drummer" !!
:-)
PERFECT way to play drums in a demo situation!!! Finally a drummer that fully understands that he is there to demo the whole drum set & allow us to hear how ALL the drums sound & not just snare & bass. Thank you Nathaniel Townsley & Gretsch.
Incredible drummer comes across as a humble and decent guy I like that!
What a fantastic drummer. The kit sounds great, but his playing, feel, and explanation of "wanting your drums to talk back". Top notch.
I love the Gretsch open, timpanic sound. This guy made 'em sing.
The fact that this is a 2000$ CAD drumset, and that huge names like Nathaniel or Victor Indrizzo play and record with it is just mind-blowing to me. They could literally get anything they want, yet they choose something most working drummers can afford... damn.
I want this kit right now. This is the best sounding kit I’ve ever heard. No joke.
🙏
great to see him with Gretsch , he is one of the best around , very inspiring video.
I literally just ordered a Renown kit because of this video...
Thank you.
Hey Greg, I’m thinking about doing the same now... how do you like it?
I bought a Renown kit two years ago. I still can't get over the great sound of these drums. Incredibly good for the price and solid for travelling.
Greg Vadnais I was just thinking 🤔 the same ! ....... this set sings especially those toms ! ....... not just power. Power with musicality !
@@sethlove06 sorry for the delay... I've played them for almost a year. Mostly jazz gigs, but also blues and rock gigs on festival stages. I got close to selling them recently because of a killer deal on some Yamaha Oaks, but I just love these too much to let them go. I have the bop configuration/. They are super responsive to tuning, on par with Yamaha. Wide tuning range as well. I crank them up for jazz, and back down the the middle for other stuff. Clear tone across a wide-range. Also, you can hit them anywhere on the head and still get a clean note. Very forgiving. I just ordered a 10" tom, and am going to get a 20" bass drum just to have something bigger so I don't have to constantly re-tune my 18". I've played drums for 25 years, and have probably owned 30-40 kits. I'm keeping these.
Wow, this guy is a beast! Technical skill and musicality
🙏
The perfect Drummer! I always come back to watch whenever I need inspiration. ✌🏼
That kick drum is phenomenal.
I saw that same d v d , in 2003 , absolutely great with timing , feel and ease of playing big up Mr townsley .very very good indeed .
Couldn't be happier with my renown. It's just absolutely perfect. Project and keep a killer tone.
For anyone whose curious, the set up Nate is using here is the 10x7, 12x8, 14x14, 20x16 set up with a 14x5.5 snare. It sounds great, might have to grab me a set just like it!
Hello Michael Segura,
Are you sure the snare has a depth of 5.5? It looks like a quite deep snare on the video.
Gretsch bass drums like the 20 and 18 always give good low end boom, cant say that with other drums in those sizes.

Nathaniel Townsley is such a “complete” drummer, yet so underrated as a musician! He’s one of the best out there compared to his peers in the drumming community! He makes those Gretsch drums sing!
Omg amazing drummer I became a fan instantly I’m speechless the way he plays the drums is so musical and powerful. Thanks 😊
Uuuuh - great playing Mr. Townsley!!!
Nathaniel is one of the most musical drummers ever! Great combo!
Love how he pushes that kick. This 20/14/12/10 sounds great.
Yea ! I love my renown . I’ve owned 3 . Right now I have an early 2000’s kit. Of all the kits I’ve had I keep going back . They are perfect ..just as good as ANY other kit out there
Nathaniel is a BEAST... I remember the very first time I saw him play. On HBO's Chris Rock Show, he was playing a cover of "Benny and The Jets" backing Biz Markie, it was Very Clear to me back then, that he was a BAD ASS.
top player on top drums , no more needs to be said .
That Great Gretsch Sound....personified in 1 marvelous Video!
Everything from his technique, the sweet tone of these drums perfectly captured 🔥🔥🔥🔥
BRAVO 👏🏾
He’s awesome….I own two Gretsch Renown kits and absolutely love em 👍❤️👍
🥁
Have both a Renown and Brooklyn kit. Same size setup for both. Find myself sitting behind the Renown kit more and.more. Great sound. Best band for the buck of any kit out there.
Most amazing drummer I"ve never heard of!
GRETSCH what a great instrument! a dream!
😄
He's so amazing.
Because of this video I bought this exact drum set
Man, can this guy play them drums.
I have the Renown Hickory and there’s nothing like it on this planet ❤
Just discovered Nathaniel. I am blown away
He's amazing!
I got a Renown 15 or so years ago, it's dope. Sound engineers always smile when they hear it.
😀
I've played some Renowns and they sound decent. But when you sit down at a USA kit, I think you will hear a huge difference. Don't let the price stop you from owning a USA kit, they will bring out the best in you!
This dude is truly a phenomenal drummer and one of the best I've seen on youtube.
Nathaniel, I met you at a Montreal drum festival many years ago when you were playing with Corey Glover. Your feel blew me away. You seemed to be very humble and a truly nice guy. Love this video, your playing is just so musical.
Just a great all round drum master , one of the best out there . Gretsch drums , none better. Renown series best mid range kit you can buy, period.
💯
I just bought a Renown RN2 5 pc in larger sizes 22,10,12,16 ( snare is 5.5x14 ) and I'm impressed with it. With the kick tuned low it has one of the best sounding bass drums I've ever played. The snare is a very pleasant surprise as well. You can't go wrong with these. Good value too.
I know I’m late to the party but I also run the kick (22) empty with an Emad and every time someone hears it it’s a holy shit moment and still blows even me away to this day.
I was surprised also with the snare. I have 8,10,12,14 20. Having only 5 lugs on the smaller toms you can't hide with them like a deep rock kit, they are very articulated and are there to be hit and they sing. His sounds better than mine....I can't understand why though lol.
Man that guy can play!!
An incredible drummer. What a great salesman.
I love his playing, very smooth.
I recently joined the Gretsch family with an RN2 kit of my own. They sound amazing and they hold their tuning like nobody's business. I'm hooked for life! Next up will be a nice new Brooklyn kit.
Thank you.
I didn't know he had joined Gretsch. His old GMS drums sounded absolutely amazing, especially that snare he had in the Modern Drummer Festival video. These drums sound good though and I would imagine Gretsch would be able to offer better support on tour since they are a much bigger company than GMS.
This shit is the bomb. Killer solo. Killer cymbals and what a great sound. So warm and the 14 rings for days. Gretsch has that magic. They are real acoustic instruments. They sing
The end of the video is a killing 🔥
I thought I was fast... This Guy is Hella Fast. looking Forward to my New Tobacco Fade Renown.
Great demo! Nice to hear all of the pieces of the kit in different tunings and in different styles. Well done.
I know I won't sound like Nat, but this video was the convincer for me about which Gretsch line to go for. The percussive punch, pure tone and resonance of these drums is simply stunning. I ordered 22/10/12/16 and added a 14 x 14; all in piano black. I already have a Gretsch 6.5 x 14 Silver Series walnut snare (sounds great!), but I may end up getting the RN2 5 x 14 to have a smaller snare available. Can't wait to unbox and meet these drums!
Mr. Townsley is killin’ it!
100 percent!
Played on a renown in guitar center once, it sounded bigger, warmer and rounder than any other kit in the demo section.
The one an only Nathaniel Townsley
Great drummer on a great drum set - period.
💯
Great top class instrument ! ...... Top class drummer !
Indeed. Thank you.
I have a gretsch reknown and a Sonor force 300 from years ago. All the sound engineers loved them
Now I'll tell you what... I've got a migraine just trying to keep up with this great drummer... Got Dang he has fast hands !! This guy can play, and those Gretsch drums just float my coke !!
gotta have this kit!!!!!
Wow those sound good!
Love the snare.
One of the best.
Nat has great stick control single tap rolls
French grip
great guy
I purchased this kit and found it very good, especially after using rock kits for the last 12 years. I purchased a brass tama snare to go with it but found the Renown snare a very good and underrated drum.
Played with Zawinul!! Ya know the cat has some serious chops!!
Sic player, Sic drums!!
umm.......the snare sound for the first half is one of the best ever.
When the RN1 came out I thinked "finally a pro level kit without the big 5K spending" . It has all the features of the USA Custom and it sounds fantastic. The mounted toms puts an enormous stress to the bass drum shell itself. You should consider keeping the RN2 for those who like it like that but also putting the option of having the virgin bass drum and die-cast hoops back for those who like the traditional Gretsch look and sound better. I have the RN1 and by far like it more than the current version. Blessings.
Does that bass drum sound like it's enormously stressed? GTFOH
Great sound especially the bass drum :):):) !
And playing. 😃
love it !
Nat it is a great drummer!!
The toms sing...The snare pops...The bass thumps
Indeed

Waiting on a 20,10,12,14 in Piano Black this week From Drum Center of Portsmouth.Yep.
Salvi, I am considering purchasing the same configuration. What made you decide the 20" over the 22"? I'm intrigued with the 20", but afraid to pull the trigger.
@@spaghettimeatballs1749 A 20 inch kick can work in more situations and better suited for either smaller or bigger rooms.
You can always mic if need be for say an outside gig at a bigger venue. With a 22 ,in certain cases,it's just too much for maybe smaller places . The Gretsch 16x20 is amazing and can tune up for jazz /blues or low enough for any Rock situation. The idea for me here was simply to have same kit for any set up.
12,14,20. 12,16,20 .10,12,16 ,20 is my preference right now. Or you can go bigger 12,14,16,20 . I did get the 16 added . Hope this helps! All the best .
@@SalMichael Thank you. It did! Can't wait to purchase mine.
@@spaghettimeatballs1749 They are killer and I might add that Drumcenter of Portsmouth provide excellent service if you're looking for a good retailer.
What a combo - awesome drums, drummer and I love the Paiste dark energy's too! I'd like to know if Gretsch will be making any more annual runs of the infamous "purewood" series? I used to purchase every set that was released...............?
2:20 STRATUS. TOP!!!!
Love you Nate! You a bad man on the drums. 😇😇🥰🥰🥰🥰
😀
that snare is killing!
@gretschdrumsusa Great demo guys, seriously considering getting these soon! Out of curiosity, what are the sizes Nate is using here?
He's got those Buddy Rich singles!
I’ve got a RN2 and the rack toms ring for days. PITA to tune unless you like the higher range. Otherwise very nice kit and gorgeous
Renown kits are fantastic! I’m ordering one in that cherry burst finish; awwww yeah!
YES!
@@gretschdrumsusa actually ended up getting a 8,10,12,14,16 Catalina in deep cherry burst and I'm DIGGING it! I wanted to save a little money, yet still get all the tom sizes I wanted. So nice having a kit with a tom mount on the kick drum as well.
Very cool! Thanks for the love.
@@gretschdrumsusa you guys have really upped your game with this kit at $999; no problem!
Awesome
Nathanael monstro da batera
Anyone know which Paiste cymbals he's using, that Dark Energy-looking ride sounds lush (as does the kit :P)
Glórias à Deus!!!
The best...
Snare is awsome
Can he be in my band plz?
Think this kit must be killer because he said it inspires him to play. What more do you need from a kit?
All of the drummers Zawinul hired were great
HE IS A THROW BACK TO THE ORIGINAL GOSPEL CHOPS DRUMMERS ( BEING THAT HE CAME OUT OF CHURCH ) GERALD HEYWARD JEFF DAVIS JOEL SMITH OF THE HAWKINS FAMILY FAME CHRIS COLEMAN USE TO HANGOUT WITH HIM. THIS GUY IS ONE OF THE COOLEST PERSONALITIES YOU CAN MEET
What size toms/bass are those? Looks like the 20/10/12/14 package, but I'm not sure. Bass drum sounds tuned very high and I'd really like to hear how deep the 20" can sound. Great sounding drums, and amazing playing.
Hello, please visit our website. It has all of the specs for our drums. 😃 www.gretschdrums.com/drums/renown
@@gretschdrumsusa Thanks for the link, but I believe he was inquiring as to what were the sizes that Mr. Townsley was using in this video. I would also love to know!
Hey there dogonv, yes this is the 20/10/12/14 config. you can tell because the bass drum has 8 lugs while the 22" kick has 10.
Maestrazo!
Toneeeeeeeeee
I want natanhiel to play the catalina maple,.make it happen gretsch haha
The video he talks about is up on youtube. Search "Alex Bershadsky Nathaniel Townsley Oz Noy." Some nice drumming on it.
This guy could make drywall buckets sing
Gretsch drums are so good that not even the Usa customs are as good as the renowns
What snare was he using in the video?
he looks younger then in 2003?! crazy
I’m thinking of ordering this kit in the same Gloss Natural finish with a 24” Bass Drum, 12”/13” Rack Toms, and 16”/18” Floor Toms 🥁
Yes!
gretschdrumsusa Decided to go with Piano Black! 🥁
Cant go wrong!
gretschdrumsusa Excited to be joining the Gretsch family!
@@steverizundrums I went piano black as well. What a set of drums!
