I just saw on the news that JT Earle has passed. Another beautiful creative soul has left us too soon and we are the poorer for it. The loss of a child--even an adult one--is simply indescribable. God bless you, Steve, God bless your family and Godspeed to JT on his journey to join the angels in Heaven.

I love everything about the early gibsons including the L1 and L2 L3 etc. The only thing i dont get is why the necks are so wide and thick. It's like a workout just noodling around on them. I own a 1921 Gibson l1. Great shape and it has a thinner easier neck. It's a mystery as it looks like it was installed at the factory. .Maybe someone put in a custom order? Not sure but it sound and playability are much nicer than all the other ones with the lumber for the necks. it shouldn't hurt to play a guitar lol. Nice job Steve. the first song i learned and performed live was guitar town. I had a guy playing the ryhythm and singing while i played the lead part. it was in a small brewery and we got a standing ovation lol. funny how simple songs sometime are more exciting for the audience. I love your soulful singing comes from inside i can tell. You are a nice person. MT

Most of these have birch backs and sides. "Paper Birch" trees are native to Michigan, so they were used often on early Gibsons. Gibson used modern style tuners vs. banjo tuners much earlier than Martin on solid headstock guitars.

Wow! What a scroll ....Gibson’s have their quirks but sometimes that’s why we love them. I get it, you start fingerpicking a 20’s Martin 00 slot head and you might say to yourself- “Where have you been all my life?” That being said, a keeper is a keeper and as god awful as they are sometimes, they birthed some of the greats despite their haphazard standards. My first taste of the Gibson, that I was aware of, was Robert Johnson(or its been alledged) then Bob Dylan’s Rehabbed Nick Lucas and then his J-50. That tone got cast in my ear. There’s me, talking out of both sides of my mouth. I love them all in the right hands or any hands. My wife is learning in a Kalamazoo KG32 V-neck. No bias, just easier to finger with her small hands and yet depth wise, it’s the deepest I own . No shoulders and a 10” radius. Easy to chord. It was refreshing to see Waterloo’s revive that neck carve. My favorite of all time. It would be great to have a bit more variation in this modern market. Thank you for the guitar history! My first guitar was a Royal guitar. LOL! I converted it to nylon strings and I still play it.
God he has no fear whacking that beauty with his bracelets. I sometimes take my belt off when I play my guitar because I don''t want my belt buckle to scratch the back :)
On March 19, 1991 you did a concert at McCabes. You played a 1985/6 Gibson Celebrity with electronics. A copy of this concert is on CZcams. The same guitar (probably the same guitar) appears in the hands of Dwight Yokum backing you up on Guitar Town at a small venue (also on CZcams). Gilmour collected these and 2 of them were sold at his auction last year ($250,000 each). THAT guitar you played sounded great! That is the guitar I want to know about. The time of the concert suggests it might have been sold shortly after but I'm hoping you held on to it.
Steve has bought and sold so many guitars throughout his life. I imagine it have to be something really special for him to keep any guitar 29 years or more.
Very interesting stuff; I’ve never seen a Gibson guitar like that. Not my preference, as far as the mandolin shape and oval sound hole goes, but it sounds amazing for a 100 year old instrument.
When evaluating a guitar, I will of course always consider playability and sound to be way more important than looks, but I must admit, that is one fugly ass guitar. lol
