Oorah Sgt. Major! I’m 5’3 and a former Marine. In boot camp, when my platoon finished the Crucible and my DI handed me the EGA, he said to me: “Remember, dynamite comes in small packages.” That was 23 years ago. I will never forget that.

(I don't know why this became a thing, but it did, people use former to imply they are no longer in active service; not that they ever lost the title.) - Former Marine myself 2009 - 2015. We really need to come up with a better way to say "no longer in active service." This is really a USMC problem, other branches don't really hold themselves like we do even when their out.

Most motivating thing ever said to my in my 13 years in the corps was the morning of 9/11/01. Was halfway through infantry training as a grunt when my city was attacked. I was one of 3 New Yorkers in my platoon. As it all unfolded, while everyone else was shocked and bewildered, me and my 2 NYC devils where seething. You could feel the rage permiating off of us. 1stSgt comes up to us 3 specifically and says "Ya'll are gonna get your revenge, I fucking promise you that." He put his hand on each on of our shoulders cuz he knew that moment we weren't just Marines, we were the righteous hand of God just waiting to be waived over the savages that dared attack New York City. I ended my career in the corps as Force, and yea...I'd say I got ample payback.

My old CSM in the Army was like this. Absolutely adored and loved by the entire battalion. If that man was leading everyone was following. I think most people don’t realize is that as a top enlisted personnel you are in charge of morale. If morales in the shitter, then you better take a hard look at yourself because it is your responsibility.

This is amazing, when I graduated boot camp I was only 5’3. Always the short one but don’t get that twisted my drill instructors told me I had the heart to carry the platoon. If I could do it anyone can. It was leaders like this that made me join in the first place all those years ago

Sergeant Major, in 1969, my Senior Drill Instructor at PISC was Staff Sergeant G.M. Wilson. In 1970, I was at Camp Pendleton and we were both in Staging Battalion, headed to WestPac and Vietnam. His second tour. I didn't see him again, until we both rotated out in 1971, and we had a brief conversation at the time. Then I ran into him in the old Camp Lejeune PX, in '72. He was a Gunnery Sergeant and I was a Sergeant with one year in rank. I should have told him that I earned that rank, because of him.

Semper Fi, Sergeant Major! I served from 1986 - 1992. Served during Operations Desert Shield/ Desert Storm. I left after my mother died. The good thing is that the values of the Corps didn't leave when I discharged. I now have a Master's degree (long-deceased friends and marines I served with PREDICTED that I would get it), and am PROUD to have served.

In the late 90s when i was in, there was a SgtMaj Hartley on Camp Kinser. He was about to get out after 30 years. A Vietnam Vet. Was always cheerful and happy to talk to us, shoot the sh-t. Never broke balls. There was this other SgtMaj, never in combat, total jerk. If you said good morning he’d stop and look at his watch. Loved standing you at attention and talking down on you. A few months after I went back to the states, I heard he was busted for adultery and given a DD.
You too Sgt. Major?? All my adult life I've been 5'8. According to the lovely VA, I'm now 5'3. They didn't say but I think the civy that punched in the number 3 on his/ her keypad gets their number values confused. Lol
Went in Corps 2006-2010 out for 9 years then into the army because it was my only choice. Man I wish I had Sgtmaj as cool as him. Semper fi til I die. We need more cool Sgtsmajs like him.
Back in my days we were not allowed to have tattoos below our quarter sleeves. While in Barracks duty, a Marine was told to removed his tattoos in the forearm. Adding while you were in a new Tattoos could take you office hours as you destroying government properties GI. But thing changes nothing stays the same. 1972 PI SC

I met a ton. A bunch of legs from Lejeune come up to Bragg to train for some reason trying to cat call the airborne like they're looking down. I leveraged my network and they made the process a lot smoother and help me gain a better understanding of how to leverage my energy for the good. I served from 1986 - 1992. Served during Operations Desert Shield/ Desert Storm.
I left after my mother died. The good thing is that the values of the Corps didn't leave when I discharged.
I now have a Master's degree (long-deceased friends and marines I served with PREDICTED that I would get it), and am PROUD to have served.

When I was in the Army our Officers had this kind of energy the NCO’s where either burned out or had stick up there fifth point of contact.. Love this

In the late 90s when i was in, there was a SgtMaj Hartley on Camp Kinser. He was about to get out after 30 years. A Vietnam Vet. Was always cheerful and happy to talk to us, shoot the sh-t. Never broke balls. There was this other SgtMaj, never in combat, total jerk. If you said good morning he’d stop and look at his watch. Loved standing you at attention and talking down on you. A few months after I went back to the states, I heard he was busted for adultery and given a DD.

Back in my days we were not allowed to have tattoos below our quarter sleeves. While in Barracks duty, a Marine was told to removed his tattoos in the forearm. Adding while you were in a new Tattoos could take you office hours as you destroying government properties GI. But thing changes nothing stays the same. 1972 PI SC

I truly agree with you.I was assigned at Ft.Belvoir,lived in Woodbridge,and most of my neighbors were Marines,hell my next door neighbor was a Marine in Motorpool at Quantico.Had good times with them at the Q-Club back in the 80'.Never had NAIRE PROBLEM with my fellow Brothers In Arms.In fact,they treated me as one of their own.Even been to their barracks.-
Also...We would jump in from Bragg to Lejeune,kick ass TOO-

Hi Bryce, thank you for serving my friend and unfortunately, you are accurate. The motivation in the private sector takes on a different form of behaviors and I definitely had to adjust. I leveraged my network and they made the process a lot smoother and help me gain a better understanding of how to leverage my energy for the good.
