The purpose of the reed relay is to switch the led on and off. There normally is a press button placed over the relay, it usually has a small magnet glued into it. When you press the button, the magnet moves close to the relay and operates the led. I enjoy your channel, thank you for posting.

@@schitlipz It's more useful to use consumables that run out rather than an infinitely useable alternative?
Would you also look for videos of people rubbing sticks together and comment 'or you could just buy a lighter?'
The point is self sufficiency; if you can rub sticks together you'll have fire as long as you have sticks for a fire. If all you know is how to use a lighter, when you run out of fuel in your lighter you'll what? Die due to hypothermia surrounded by a bunch of sticks?
      Same concept applies here.

That reed switch could be used for momentarily shorting the coil, which is supposed to deliver a very sharp pulse of voltage, many times higher than the normal voltage of the coil. Sounds far-fetched but it works. The only thing is to get the timing right.

The reed switch is there because the on/off switch has a magnet in it. I have this same shaker lamp

Why are there rubber stoppers instead of a spring? All the energy lost from physical deformation and noise seems backward to the objective of this device. Does the super capacitor increase the duration of light? You didn't say.
I would maybe make this with a draw wire, to turn a compact but massive magnetic flywheel/cylinder (the electrical load would naturally slow and brake the wheel). Or, in lieu of a draw wire, a twisted gear system with same flywheel.
In fact, I remember in the 70s a handheld flashlight in Yugoslavia that was squeezed to turn a flywheel. Same principle.

The supercap stores the charge from the shake generator and slowly releases power into the light, extending the length of time the light was on.

I thought the same. having an extra large capacitor is nice for long duration but it will also take longer to reach its peak voltage and will spend most of the time below that, so a joule thief would make a lot of sense to me.
