I'd like to say, American Black Muslims have a huge history behind them. People think of Black Muslims as just converts, Muslims coming mainly from India/Pakistan off the boat. Actually, when C. Columbus settled in America, enslaved the people there and brought in more slaves from Africa, these slaves were from lands inhabited by African Muslims-Islam having been introduced there centuries before. Amongst them were scholars and memorisers of the Quran. People say, ‘why do we need to memorise the Quran.. if it's in the book, it's in the book’. Actually, when you're a slave, you don't get to bring paper and pencil. In fact, the only Quran and teachings they had were from memory. There had been reports of early Muslim slaves who'd memorised the Quran re-writing the Quran from memory. To me that was truly fascinating! And many people don't know about this!
