NorthStar E420 Performance Upgrades ~ What Fits It?

  • Today I tear into the Northern Tool NorthStar E420 fuel injection engine. We want to find out what parts fits it so I can decide if I want to proceed with a standalone ecu to tune the fuel injection. We try a billet flywheel, billet rod, valve springs, and performance cam.     Even a supercharged engine has overlap in the cam timing. I run a supercharged Top Fuel bike and it uses a substantial amount of overlap.There is also some technology that uses what is referred to as a "five cycle " which is an extreme example of overlap used on a couple of foreign made cars. It is not really a five cycle engine, but is referred to as such. My bike actually runs a lot of overlap. It helps to scavenge burnt exhaust from the cylinder.

    Would have been nice to Dyno that stock and after with the upgraded parts even if the ECU is wrong....just for the educational benefit to your fans , wonderful amount of knowledge you have 👍🇺🇲🇬🇧

    People who live in cold weather and fuel costs are high would benefit from this. Unless the cold air is so oxygenated that it runs too lean.On second thought. If the ecu/ throttle body fails on a generator it could cause life endangering problems in remote places like Alaska.

    Team up with microsquirt 🤔 efi kits for big and small blocks. I’d love for my 224 to be efi.

    EFI throttle assemblies for motorcycles could probably be easily adapted to these types of engines, with a reflashed or aftermarket ECU.

    Go with a fuel tech for a stand alone ecu.

    I'd buy it bc the fan shroud looks so cool! I wonder if they it as a replacement part? It could get damaged on a log splitter, ect. Otherwise, like you said, not worth the extra $ for the EFI. Thanks for the vid. Love the channel and the parts you sell. Again, that fan scroud looks so 👌 🔥

    Don’t get me wrong it’s super cool those engines efi or not but all the money in upgrades at that point I rather pick out a dirtbike engine so at least you would have gears and a clutch

    I watch most all your videos. You have come so far since the beginning of RBG. Something to be proud of & blessed from above..! Just checked the website looking for 1" 90s for a custom exhaust build on my vintage 70s Sears bike. Did not see them...? Out of stock..?

    Centrifugal blowers such as Procharger run blow through but both roots and the all mighty Screw (GAP) blowers are draw through. You need to in touch with Procharger i think they would work with you to figure out a system. They have a bolt on kit for Polaris. Can you imagine a 670 with a Procharger. I also think you would have better luck with a Mikuni Super BN carb with that roots blower. Great info this video hopefully will save someone a huge disappointment.     I just finished rebuilding my gx160 Honda and your videos have been really helpful in that build and now I am building another same one at school and it only runs on full choke at high rpm’s can you help

    rethink your no overlap for boost theory that is a myth that has been massively disproven in racing engines for years. David vizard has many things to say on boosted cams and the areas of concern are in duration and LSA not overlap. boosted engines flow more at low lift and thus acts like more duration which requires mostly LSA and some duration tweeks in only the hottest of drag race engines. this engine does not fall under that. nor would it need it for street trail etc. I promise you it will run like ass with no overlap make very little power. think of every blown or turboed v8, aint no cam company grinding zero overlap cams else wise theyd be all over the catalogs

    I removed my balance shaft on my duromax 420, only vibration I feel harder is around 3k , but gained 1mph topspeed

    Isn't boost made before it enters the cylinder? You are creating denser air, that doesn't go away because of overlap. If overlap caused a bunch of compression loss an N/A engine wouldn't run either, right?

    Im curious. Wouldnt a Forged iron rod ( or forged iron billet ) rod be much stronger then just a aluminum billet rod, since aluminum is softer and the non forged grain structure of a billet part isnt as strong as one that went through a forging process. So why doesnt GPS sell a forged iron rod?

    well... you should have gone speeduino no2c and tuner studio, but, anyhow, before you dedicate yourself to microsquirt, ask them this, can the engine use the map sensor as a cam sensor ? (I assume it doesnt have a provision for a cam sensor). That is required for full synch operation (720 vs 360 degree ops). one of those squirts does support map as cam.
    and, since the injection that came with engine doesnt even have proper sensors, its a total waste of money, better off getting naturally aspirated and project it up into efi.
    if they dont support map as cam, you can rig it up using a schmitt trigger (10 bucks amazon) and take that into the cam sensor on the ecu ( except, you cant access the ecu code, so you need a second map just for one cylinder, cylinder 1, if you used speeduino then you can use the single original map and have access to the ecu code to tell it which crank tooth to look for to synch the cam to, cyl 1 not cyl 2 schmitt pulse)).
