It is fairly loyal to the book (the ending being the main difference) and the main set-pieces are great. But the problem for me is that the story isn't as urgent (there isn't a full moon deadline or a victim to rescue) and also the stylistic choices in that film are distracting.

The story was inspired by the time the FBI asked Ted Bundy to create a profile for the green river killer, when they finally caught him they realized that Bundys profile was pretty accurate.
The scene where Catherine is kidnapped is also inspired by Bundy who would fake having a broken arm and act like he was struggling to get something in his car to get women to help him and when they did he would hit them over the head and push them into his car.
Buffalo bill was inspired by a few killers like Ed Gein who besides killing three people he would also dig up recently buried bodies and use them to make things like a pair of gloves and a lamp shade made out of skin and furniture made from bones and skulls.
I found out a few months ago that the actors who played bill and Catherine actually dated while filming the movie.
Jodie foster said that Anthony Hopkins ad libbed the line about her shoes and her accent which she was hurt by because she had worked hard on her West Virginia accent.
The poodle also appeared in the movies the burbs with Tom Hanks and Pee wees Big adventure.

Don't forget that there's also British serial killer Robert Maudsley who served as the inspiration for the glass cell as Maudsley himself currently lives in a prison cell in the basement of HMP Wakefield AKA the Monster Mansion and Maudsley's prison cell is described as being very identical to Lector's one

21:03 - I always read that as the previous team missed it because they were blokes and never considered it. But Starling, being the underdog female (the way the film shows it), may have considered that as a good hiding place for a young girl's private things.

Hannibal drops clues about Buffalo Bill throughout the movie. He says the drawing in his cell is of a church called the Belvedere; Bill lives in Belvedere, Ohio. All 3 of the Hopkins films are worth watching. This is the best of them. 'Hannibal' probably weakest. 'Red Dragon' and the earlier 'Manhunter' are both very much worth watching and interesting to contrast. Brian Cox as "Lektor" in 'Manhunter'. 'Hannibal Rising' is fair but reveals perhaps too much of Hannibal's origins.

After decades of watching true crime, murder, and mayhem on TV and in movies I'm unfortunately totally desensitized to it. Also, Beatrice Straight holds the record for the shortest screen time to win an Oscar, with 5 minutes and 40 seconds of screen time in Network (which is a great movie).

When it was playing in theatres Hopkins liked to go and see it. He’d sit behind the most nervous-looking person he could find and when it was over tap them on the shoulder and say “So, did you enjoy the movie?” in his Lecter voice. Legend has it that he had to stop doing it after he was at a screening where the film broke just after Lecter’s escape. He shouted “It’s OK, everyone, stay calm” in that voice and nearly caused a riot… (probably untrue, but Hopkins is certainly capable of it)

The foundation of the relationship between Clairese and Lecter occurs early in their first interview. She's says she's a student and she's there to learn from him. The idea amuses him, and he obviously thinks she has potential. He weighs the idea, then decides to chase her off with a little agression. He could have been so much worse. He and Crawford have been enemies for a decade but he doesn't trap her in that ancient history either. And later doesn't hold her to blame for Crawford's deceit.

The sequel could not truly adapt the book it was based on. In the book the author almost plays Lecter to Jodie Foster, both referencing Starling as if he was talking about Foster and giving the film such a messed up conclusion it's like he was daring Foster to do it, which she didn't.
Also, they play mind games with the reader. You go in the characters' heads. You see that Starling's boss is the good guy but also a disgusting jerk. Then you see Hannibal's the villain BUT his mind is literally a beautiful museum and that he is cultured and has a code of honor. So you don't like the hero and kind of like the villain. So when you get to their confrontation... You're so off balance. And then that finale has a massively different more shocking end than the film version. I won't spoil it but I had to force myself to read it to finish the book and felt really traumatized by it. Not the same with Hannibal movie's ending.

In the book, one of his clues to the identity of the killer is the chemical formula for bilirubin (probably not spelling that right). This is the killer’s name (Billy Rubin), but it’s also the colouring agent in shit and is said to be the exact same shade as Doctor Chiltern’s hair.
Part of the reason it took so long to get a sequel is that Thomas Harris takes years between books. He’s sort of the anti-Stephen King when it comes to his output.

The first book, Red Dragon was adapted to film twice. Before Silence in the 1980s with stylistic choices for the time with a small budget. It was called Mind Hunter. The second adaptation was Red Dragon, made as a prequel, had a big budget and its was hugh compared to the other film. But it was tied closely to the same cinematic choices as Silence. Still, I like both productions. I don't really like the later books, movies and prequels. They become less and less based on sound developmental psychology, giving spurious " reasons" for Dr Lector's behavior. Hannibal Lector's brain is broken. His amygdala, where we experience emotions, including empathy for others, doesn't function properly. He was born that way or sustained the damage when he was a baby. Most psychopaths aren't dangerous and know there's rules they must and do follow. They already get enough bad press, without folks being scared their livers are going to be eaten any moment.
But I honestly don't blame anyone for cashing in on the character's popularity. It's a fictional character after all.

Glad to see this reaction, such a great thriller! I'd like to recommend 2 movies usually left aside by reactors: The Skeleton Key, very creepy and lots of scares, and The House That Jack Built, which it's kinda heavy to see but also great due to its dark humour and hidden themes!

The books are great, i read the series about a decade ago for the 1st time... i felt similar to them as i did the films if I'm honest, i absolutely loved three of them but I really didnt really like Hannibal Rising... i felt sorry for the author Thomas Harris. The studio that made the films said they wanted an origin film and if he didnt do it, they'd just do it without his input. He wrote the book simply to ensure that he got to write it. forced to rush a story that imo shouldnt have been told 😂 poor guy

I'd recommend watching the entire series that includes Hannibal, Red Dragon and Hannibal Rising. Some are better than others, and nothing can top Silence, but they're worth watching just to see the other adaptations of the novels. Some of them helped me appreciate Silence of the Lambs even more, but there was one I really liked. I won't say which because I don't want to spoil them.

Great reaction as always, guys! You get better and better at this every time and could truly teach some university level courses on film at this point, I would think.
One quick correction - when you mention Jodi Foster's voice and being worried about being annoyed by it, because you can only think of 'The Incredibles' - that's actually a different actress - Holly Hunter. But spot-on because both women have extremely similar, and specific types of voices.
Anyway, always looking forward to the next one. Hoping you do 'Creepshow' at some point, unless I missed it and you've done it already. I'll have to check.
