Driving my car, had the radio on, and the DJ played this, I pulled over to the curb so I could give it my full attention, I had never heard anyone play steel guitar like that, Buddy is one of a kind, and I am a big fan WOW
The "Big E " baby!!!!! Never been anyone like him..... and , alas, there probably never will be. By far and away, the greatest steel man who ever was; a legend in his own time.
Certainly one of the finest professional entertainers I have ever met. He told me he never slept when the bus was moving. His job was to stay awake and talk to the driver to keep him from falling asleep at the wheel. He was that kind of person.
Ross Bolen I have no affiliation with country music ( I grew up around mostly Jamaican poeple) but holy shit Buddy Emmon's phrasing, chordal playing etc is so great Ive turned the corner on the whole genre. If you haven't heard "Minors Aloud" with Lenny Breau check it out to hear Big E's jazzier side.
That was one of Ray's and Buddy's best show for TV, It was the Austin City Limits which I got to attend sound check that day and it was as good as any other show he has ever recorded! RIP you guys, Know ya'll are playing in Heaven, and God's loving every minute!
Great story and historical moment for you. Remember, Willy wrote Night Life, was the father of Austin C. L., and the song was performed by two of the greatest ever!
while we're extolling the great musicians, let's not forget ray's forever musical director and bandleader (c. 1969-2000), the late blondie calderon at the piano..
The performance is a special moment for the entire band as the concoction of instruments cook into an uncommon brew of perfection. The sheer joy of everyone on that stage is something you don't see every day on the road.
it's easy to be happy when you're playing with ray price...geez...what's not to like?...words you never hear in ray's band: "hey...do we have any gigs booked this month?"...easy work, no heavy lifting, always booked...
Cliff, if you are reading this,. Your Daddy was so special. We saw him in later years at the Shamrock In Houston (No longer here), but he bought so much joy to us. Please embrace that and know that it meant a lot to us. It is a part of our memory, that will never go away. A different time when people got dressed up to go to these special events, was allowed to be adults and smoke, have a drink or three..and have a good time. So sad that all of this has gone away to a world of confused people who communicate by emojis and text messages instead of living life in the real world.
Who could give this the thumbs down???Ray gets taken to another level after Buddy's solo!!!!Had me hollering!!!!That's all being played on the C6th. neck.
Wow , that's the jazz neck , so I've heard. The E9th neck is for country . I'm a drummer and vocalist , but I have nothing but respect for any musician that can play steele . As a drummer vocalist , I have 5 axis of movments , hands and feet and voice . But steele players have 6. Because they also use their knees to control levers under the steele. Just amazing . And if they sing , that's seven.
Ray laughs because of Buddy Emmon's unbelievable playing and then at 2.47 Buddy flashes him that grin that says it all. Two of the all-time greats at the top of their game. I wish I could have been there for that concert- there are no replacements for these incredible musicians and singers.
Im 25 and approve this high class styled country music. I went to Nashville back in ' 05 Porter Wagner was to play was down with pneumonia you know who replaced him? Brad Fuc*in Paisley. I'll admit I'm a bit inebriated but heaven almighty was it awful. There I was in the holy land of good music and in walks in with a dinky 1x wired crown hat and torn jeans brad f'in paisley. I was with my then 78 year old grandfather both us wearing suits and our finest boots to patronize a legendary musician to only realize what music has gone to. Oh yes the crowd cheered. Thank the lord I got to see Mr. Price through the finest fund raising concert out in Burelson Tx before his time came. Just like Jones says,"I may be old, but I ain't impaired", I got to see an at peace Ray Price.
Dirk Diggler If you type in "Concert Conversation The Big E Tribute to Buddy Emmons" here at CZcams you will find a 90 minute tribute to him. It has many examples of his humour and his amazing innovations as a player and inventor. Many great musicians play his solos and he is then introduced. Early in the tribute this video of him and Ray is shown- it encapsulates Buddy and reminds us of his time with Ray Price 50 years ago. Two of the really greatest- being appreciated by other greats. Well worth watching if you like real country music and incredible anecdotes and the greatest musical skills.
You nailed it, Brother - that little part is one of the hi-lites of this famous - and maybe best - live performance of Ray doing "Night Life". I remember watching it on Austin City Limits when it was first aired.
As a kid of about 18 I heard Buddy and Ray at the National Steel Guitar Convention in St. Louis. I didn't know who they were or what legends they would become, but it's one of the highlights of my live music experiences , and a cherished memory............eternal!
On this day in 1963 {September 28th} Rusty Draper's "Night Life" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #57 and spent 8 weeks on the Top 100... Also in 1963 country singer Ray Price covered it for his album of the same name... The song was written by Willie Nelson and in 1961 he was the first person to recorded it... Rusty Draper passed away on March 28th, 2003 at the age of 80... R.I.P Mr. Draper and Mr. Price turns 87 this coming January 12th...
As a young boy I hung around my Grandmas house. She was straight out of the backwoods of Slick Rock Kentucky. She would not let me call her Grandma or Grandmother. Only Momo! Her guys were Johnny Carson & Ray Price. When Ray was qued up on KRCO radio Prineville, OR. The world stopped! I knew every song he sang cause everything stopped and we listened!
GO BUDDY, GO!!!!!! Rest in Peace and thank you for all the great music - guitar players such as Danny Gatton, Lenny Breau and James Burton all admired your genius.
If it wasn't for Buddy Emmons _gladly well to the fore_ I guess I wouldn't be seduced to even lookin' or listenin' to this kind of MOR 'country' The man really was one of the best.
My FIL has the signed master recording of willies nightlife on vinyl. Locked up in the safe. What a cool piece of history to have. He got it from Willis mandolin player.
The best steel guitar player that ever lived,Buddy Emmons, would have been 82 today. That's the C6th. neck that he's playing.Night Life was written by Willie Nelson.R.I.P. to Ray,also. You can tell from this video that they're having too much fun!!!
Right??? I have played this clip 100 times, and every time it's as good as the first. but, I am a pedal steel player, so, go figure!! The Big E baby!!!!!The Force and the Source!
Excellent, I wish there was a whole video of this performance, Ray was really "energetic" in this performance!!! Excellent performance!! Any idea of the year on this? Thanks for posting it.
The reason Ray was grinning so much at the end was because Buddy stumbled for a moment and Ray knew it . Buddy grinned at him because Ray was on the verge of laughing but the show must go on . Great recovery though , as Danny Gatton would say " no charge for mistakes " .
Excellent ol' Country. Not like the Mix/match garbage they are putting out today. Country has gone "Rap" as what I heard today. That's Hideous.............. get rid of these new artists and bring back ol' Haggard and Jones
Im sure the"Rap" youve heard was terrible but believe it or not some of it has merit. Buddy was a hell of a player. Im a regular old guitar player and I love adapting his chord licks and turnarounds for my instrument. RIP Big E.
The tempo is too fast. This happens when people are excited over a live performance. The drummer should have clicked off the tempo on his drum sticks to get the performers synched. Too fast deprives this song of the emotion. It makes it happy when fast. Most songs are written alone, in a reflective mood.
The band leader is/was the piano player. He sets the speed. I guarantee you it’s not fast. Maybe for your taste, but you are here in a comment board and they are there making it happen and not a single person in that crowd thought it was too fast.
One of the finest singers of all time and the older he got the better his voice. ❤
Driving my car, had the radio on, and the DJ played this, I pulled over to the curb so I could give it my full attention, I had never heard anyone play steel guitar like that, Buddy is one of a kind, and I am a big fan
WOW
I have almost wrecked car so many times listening to Emmons I've lost track
Ray Price cracking up after BE does that crazy diatonic piece after the 2nd " listen to the blues they're playing "
Buddy was an incomparable steel player. And Ray had perhaps the best pure singing voice in country music. They will both be missed.
Ross Bolen Ralph Mooney and Norm Hamlett were pretty good steel players
Loved his music. He could sing anything from country to pop to the Blues.
@@hanklogsdon8390, least we not forget Tom Brumley with that bunch.
Well said

Great performance by Ray Price and Buddy Emmons! Ray looked like he was really enjoying singing the song! Marvelous!
And there once was real music!!!
No autotune or computer overdubbing.

It was an insiders joke. I think both of them new Buddy's last solo was way out(wtf) there and had a good laugh about it.
The album Night Life was one of the greatest Country albums ever recorded. RBC
Now theres a show!! what a band and Ray Price was the best

Willie is still alive and kicking in March 2024

Great combination of players!
RIP Buddy Emmons.
Good God! Emmons on the steel, Price on the vocal. Hallelujah!
Buddy tickled Ray with that lick and then kept cheesing at him so he'd keep laughing. Man, I love Buddy's playing and his vibe.

Thank you, brings back good memories. More importantly, reminds me of how much my Mom likes this singer.
Ray, Patsy and Marty Robbins are my idea of country music!
The Best!! Could listen to this all night, every night!!!
Mr. Buddy Emmons. Truly a legend.
No words are adiquite!!!❤ 🎼🎵🎶 Beyond categorisation !!! Sure miss these guys ! 😓
This is soulful.
Yeah , some great blues fo sho.
Ray sang this so good ..Buddy's style of steel is one of a kind.
The best of the best!
Damn! Incredible....and the section including Carroll and Ora Mae Hubbard. Carroll was an incredible musician in his own right.
Thank you for the post; I love Ray and Buddy.
True class, not to mention the great band and buddy
Great track love Ray and Buddy never heard it played this fast
So good they should have played twice. The slow tempo at beginning of show and this as the closer.
Year was around 1980. Kenny Sears (fiddle, left side) was with Mel Tillis '77-'88, but took a year off in the middle and played for Ray.
mdhsabh Dawn Sears' husband? From the Time Jumpers?
He appeared on Willie Nelson's new album.
Faye Hoggard Yep!
@@fayehoggard2017Kenny is a Time Jumper as well.
damn. unbelievable
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Gee, Marcel, many thanks for sharing this one. Buddy is awesome on this video (as in all the other video's of course).
The best steel ever, The big E From Tennessee 🙏
Actually from Michawaka, Indiana.
Priceless! (no pun intended)
What a legend.
Legends!!!
Marcel my friend, You made my day
Love you Ray...RIP
Seen Ray shows at Turtle Lake casino many times
❤❤❤
Towards the end of the song, Buddy broke up Ray with his playing.
Go, Buddy, Go!
listen at 2:31 the end of buddy's solo, the low register sound, and just after ray laugh
"he dared to make it"
the greats
Great singing and playing..Could someone tell me who bass player is ? He looks so familiar.
Ernie Rowel
Cool
Excellent, I wish there was a whole video of this performance, Ray was really "energetic" in this performance!!! Excellent performance!! Any idea of the year on this? Thanks for posting it.
1981 I'm pretty sure.
The reason Ray was grinning so much at the end was because Buddy stumbled for a moment and Ray knew it . Buddy grinned at him because Ray was on the verge of laughing but the show must go on . Great recovery though , as Danny Gatton would say " no charge for mistakes " .
Not true at all....Ray was laughing and so were the band because of that wild chromatic lick that Buddy played that he is famous for playing...
Buddy can't be touched. Ray neither, Ernie ain't no slack either. Love that fat --- chord.
Love the woman fiddler as part of the band-no big deal.
2:56 Here it comes!!!!
Excellent ol' Country. Not like the Mix/match garbage they are putting out today. Country has gone "Rap" as what I heard today. That's Hideous.............. get rid of these new artists and bring back ol' Haggard and Jones

Unlike a lot of people in his era that couldn’t really sing well (Ernest Tubb), Ray Price actually could sing.
Yeah Tubb was horrible.
Cash and Jennings sucked the worst of all
Buddy Emmons should have increased the volume pedal every time he pressed the boo-ah pedal. It is a very dramatic part of the song.
Is that Ernie Rowell on bass?
It is... I went to high school with Ernie's younger brother, Tim... I knew Ernie when he was touring with Stonewall Jackson, back in the early 1970s
Dick Vernon also was a nasty steel player
buddy
Buddy.. still the baddest bitch on the block!!!!
The tempo is too fast. This happens when people are excited over a live performance. The drummer should have clicked off the tempo on his drum sticks to get the performers synched. Too fast deprives this song of the emotion. It makes it happy when fast. Most songs are written alone, in a reflective mood.
Ray wanted the faster tempo in this era
The band leader is/was the piano player. He sets the speed. I guarantee you it’s not fast. Maybe for your taste, but you are here in a comment board and they are there making it happen and not a single person in that crowd thought it was too fast.
I agree with you. I like the slow version. It's about a guy stuck in a place he can't get out of, so he makes the best of it.
The band is too loud.
The band is way too loud.
Turn your volume down......Problem Solved
