12:25 Red August (1966) gives me nightmares. Middle school and highschool students murdered their teachers and their families in their homes. They also turned on each other as stated in the video. Can you imagine a mob of 13~15 year old kids storming your house, and you try to reason with them, but everything you say is just more evidence of your guilt to them. They ransack your house and eventually rip you and your family to pieces - remember that it was common to have three generations of people living under one roof, so they would kill everyone from your grandparents to your children and then you. No wonder so many committed suicide - imagine seeing this happen to your country, and the only solution is to do to them exactly what they are doing to you. You would have to kill off two generations (mainly those same kids and their parents) to weed out Communist ideology and preserve your culture and country. Horrifying

I used to have the same reaction until I realized & accepted the truth of the matter. the ruling class doesn't think like we do; sociopaths really do rule the world. now it makes perfect sense, no longer amazing...simple cause & effect. what shocks me is what the average citizen is capable of....a handful of leaders can't slaughter millions of "counter revolutionaries".
Not surpised by this, I am however, very surprised when leaders actually care about their populace. We have always existed for the sole purpose of being taxed and used, with lowest common denominator leading the mob. There is not much care for the plebians of the world.
I'm constantly amazed by the people themselves. I know most people are dumb, but dumb to the point of torture and homicide on behalf of someone like Mao... That's freezing temperature IQ.

The story of what happened to Lin Biao who led the so called Great Cultural Revolution is not mentioned and could be the subject of a separate video. He was killed in a 1970 plane crash in Mongolia in the aftermath of what may have been a coup attempt against Mao. The aircraft involved was a British built Trident that apparently ran out of fuel after a hurried departure. Mao’s exploitation of the raging hormones of teenagers was a stroke of genius. The worst effect of the GPCR was the destruction of China’s moral compass. It also resulted in the greatest destruction of cultural artifacts in history.

One of effects of the Cultural Revolution not mentioned was the fundamental purpose of the People's Liberation Army changing from the biggest war machine in the Far East to a political apparatus dedicated to keeping the CCP in power. The generals who were seasoned veterans of the Long March, Second Sino-Japanese War, Revolution and the Great Leap Forward were all executed and replaced with high ranking CCP hacks with no combat training or military experience whatsoever. This is why the People's Liberation Army's only military success they enjoyed since the Korean War was the Tienanmen Square Massacre.
From the point of view of Chinese interests, the Korean War, the Sino-Indian War, and the Sino-Vietnamese War are all victories for China, but they are not important anymore. Since the military reform, China has modernized to act in the interests of the party and the state, no longer a revolutionary army。

Odd, but I did. When they showed the picture the children, I actually looked for Winnie the Pooh. Perhaps because I have seen other such stories. There are African countries where soldiers steal children and teach them to hate and kill the people they came from. A child being told their parents are criminals, and deprived of contact with those parents, can end up being taught lots of crazy beliefs.
Born and raised in China. I didn’t like mao as the elder generations did because of the Culture revolution. However, the failure of this revolution is not “CHINA DOESNT WANT YOU TO KNOW”. China learnt from that failure and moved on to find our own way to develop the country without much help from others. Lots of the red guards are not CCP members, and they got away from punishment. When the society is in chaos, it’s impossible to do that. BTW, fangfang, the author of the was a red guard. China has a tradition which is called “intergenarational historiography”. It’s impossible to be objective if all the stakeholders and their family is still active. Writing history that is recent, usually is for the ongoing politics.
It amazes me how governments can sew division and form factions to create tribalistic movements and then come in and "save the day" after all the culture has been erased or irreparably broken.
It’s baffles my mind when you see people on Instagram that worship mao and have pages about him. The real kicker is how many people follow these pages and agree

Horrifying

I remember Mao was one of them and at 13 I’d never heard of him but I remember him being described as “revolutionary” and “a man of the people”. His accomplishment was uniting China. I am constantly amazed by what leaders are capable of doing to the people they are supposed to represent and protect. It is sickening that so many people died at the hands of their countrymen due to hysteria supported by the government.
Not trying to be rude, but have you EVER read up on history?
I mean it does have something to do with Mao being a extremely lucky, borderline retarded peasant (kill all the birds as a prime example), absolutely no grasp on the effects and consequences of their actions and quite likely couldn't even imagine the scale of suffering his policies enacted.

Don't you mean the Korean War, not the Great Leap Forward?
I don't think the military gained much valuable experience from the Great Leap Forward...
Even I’ve noticed the PLA was weak after that event. Thankfully Deng fixed everything. One of the qualities I admire from him.
From the point of view of Chinese interests, the Korean War, the Sino-Indian War, and the Sino-Vietnamese War are all victories for China, but they are not important anymore. Since the military reform, China has modernized to act in the interests of the party and the state, no longer a revolutionary army。
