What is Chael going on about? If you're talking about his ranking within the division, he's still ranked as the number one contender. If you're just talking about "who is Adesanya fighting next?", then it's Strickland next, and Du Plessis if he's ready by the time the winner of that fight is ready for their next fight will be next after Strickland.
The simple fact is, Du Plessis is out for medical reasons right now. Adesanya still wants to fight him, and if he defends his belt, he'll fight Du Plessis next. As for UFC 293, Adesanya needed someone to fight on that card, he wasn't going to skip it, who else would headline? That's the reason why Strickland got called out, because Adesanya knew that Strickland would be up for it, and would sell the card.
Chris Weidman was in the exact same situation years ago. He was number 1 contender to fight Luke Rockhold for the title. Two weeks before the fight, got injured and Bisping stepped in on short notice became the first UK champion in history and Chris never got his title shot back.
The exact same situation can happen for DDP. He didn’t take the fight when it was offered. Sure he’s the #1 contender but before he fights again Costa & Khamzat are gonna be fighting. Either one of those guys could easily skip over DDP for a title shot with a finish. Khamzat for the star power in a massive super fight against Adesanya and Costa because if he upsets Khamzat everybody will be screaming for a rematch with Izzy.
The right contenders don’t always get title shots. Look at Tony Ferguson, Belal Muhammad & Beniel Dariush to name a few. 12 fight winning streak. No title shot. 9 fight winning streak. No title shot. 8 fight winning streak. No title shot
DDP is a complete fuckin moron for not accepting the fight. Injured or not. By the time he comes back the UFC could easily have him fight again before getting a title shot.
I fully expect Alex vs. Jiri to be announced before the end of this year for the vacant LHW. If Alex wins, and Izzy wins I can 100% see a scenario where izzy fights the trilogy at 205. Then they do an interim of Khamzat/costa vs. DDP.
If anything I could see them trying to have izzy vs Alex 3 at UFC 300.

People love to say that fight was boring, and that’s fair, but man I loved it. Adesanya is usually pretty boring no matter what, because his opponents agree to play his game. Romero refused to play Adesanya’s game, and Izzy couldn’t do much about it. Romero even came super close to knocking Izzy TF out. Sure, there may not have been a ton of action, but I thought tension of Yoel Romero’s was really exciting.

Tough night at the office for Sean - happy that he gets the shot at the champ - but, Dricus v Izzy is a much better fight as stylistically and by physicality Dricus is a much bigger threat.
If I had to guess I reckon in Izzy’s mind he would like to fight Sean, then Dricus, then winner of Khamzat vs Costa, and if Alex beats Jiri then he will have a trilogy with Alex at 205. If all goes to plan of course.
