The Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award is a lifetime honor awarded no more than 6 times every 10 years by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) to no more than one living writer of fantasy or science fiction.
There have been 25 awards given out so far to vintage sci-fi authors and of course, today’s author, Ray Bradbury is one of the 25. I just discovered a new to me Bradbury short story from 1948, read it and will be narrating it soon. Not sure when it will find its way to the podcast but I think you will love it when you hear it.
Bradbury was born in Waukegan, Illinois, in 1920, and grew up in a small town where he spent much of his childhood reading books from the local library. He was particularly drawn to the works of Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, and Edgar Allan Poe. At the age of twelve, Bradbury had a life-changing experience that would set him on the path to becoming a writer.
One day, Bradbury attended a carnival where a magician named Mr. Electrico performed a show. During the performance, Mr. Electrico touched Bradbury on the forehead with an electrified sword and shouted, "Live forever!" The experience left Bradbury feeling invigorated and inspired.
After the show, Bradbury went home and began writing stories in his notebook. He spent countless hours writing, and by the time he was a teenager, he had written dozens of short stories. Bradbury credited Mr. Electrico with sparking his love for storytelling and inspiring him to pursue a career as a writer.
In his own words this is what Ray Bradbury had to say about this life changing event, “The next day, even while attending an uncle’s funeral, I could not forget Mr. Electrico. As our car headed home for the family’s post-funeral wake, to my parents’ consternation I leaped out and raced down the hill to the carnival. I carried with me a ball-in-vase trick I had ordered through the mail from Johnson Smith & Co. as an excuse to see Mr. Electrico. I had to find out just how to “Live forever!”
In later years, Bradbury would often speak about the impact that Mr. Electrico had on his life. He believed that the experience taught him that writing was a way to "live forever" by creating works that would endure long after he was gone.
That is so cool! From the pages of Planet Stories Magazine in 1947 comes a terrific tale from Grand Master Ray Bradbury. Our story begins on page 44, Rocket Summer by Ray Bradbury …
Next week on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, Shaan made the longest crawl in history-to avoid crawling before tyrants!... The Martian Shore written by Charles L. Fontenay.

Surprisingly depressing for such an optimistic sf writer 😂

Isn't it kind of ironic that SciFi from 70-80 years back can rarely be dated by a casual read?
Are we not progressing in Science as quick as we should?
Or are these authors just Genius?
(I wrote that before listening to this story....... which is obviously a exception... what wih us having been to the Moon... but my point persists).

    • @VintageSciFiAudiobooks

Personally I believe these authors are genius. There are stories I'm getting ready to record that blow my mind with things they wrote about 70, 80 and even 90 years ago that are happening or are on the verge of happening now.

I accidentally walked through a sinister indoor market today, on the way to find a snack.. it turns out, that they are deleting the beautiful old market ...
I thought it was totally closed... me n the ol lady walked through the shuttered up cubes.... and saw a sign saying, " to fund more great retailers, continue this way"..
I thought we were going to end up in a metal shuttered cage of dystopian misery...
but.. seriously, (this actually literally really happened this afternoon, in Derby )
there were a few surviving market stalls in the old Eagle Centre Market ...
There was this Book Stall... it occupied about 5 or 7 of these small Market cubicles..
I saw a BATMAN book (it was a collectors thing for an overpriced version of the Console game)... which peaked my interest
      ...
So I kept looking and I only went and laid my next eyeballs on a ...
DAMON KNIGHT (never heard of him) 1965 - (there was a first print boast on the cover - true though... but probably irrelevant due to annual compilations being printed annually!? lOl,
Honestly, the very next thing I looked at in this area of possibly 10,000 books....
was a NEBULA SCI FI BOOK!
I thought.. "50p" but... nope.. £3.00... (I am broke as F%&£) but I bought it in a heartbeat..
Very sad... I met the lady that runs the amazing stall and her father too..
they are being kicked out but positively HAVE found a high street shop....but sadly.. not remotely big enough to house all of their stock!
Paper is King! Especially Orangey, Yellow paper!

It is nice to hold in your hand old vintage sci-fi. Some of these paperbacks and hardbacks will eventually be lost forever. Sad.
