  • I challenge people to connect to the deeper story, the part that frightens them to share. I also try to lead by example. It’s been over 10 years since I managed to overcome my addiction to class-A drugs
So what does drug addiction have to do with ADHD??
Astella, my wife explains it like this:
It isn’t rare to find someone with ADHD to have some form of addiction (alcohol, drugs, sex, adventure junkies) because it’s all about chasing stimulus. When your brain has a dopamine deficiency, it becomes a natural response as part of stimulus-seeking behavior to feel “normal”.
Rainer Maria Rilke's poem The Panther sums up the emotional disconnection that I have, until now, felt my whole life
His vision, from the constantly passing bars, has grown so weary that it cannot hold anything else. It seems to him there are a thousand bars; and behind the bars, no world.
As he paces in cramped circles, over and over, the movement of his powerful soft strides is like a ritual dance around a center in which a mighty will stands paralyzed.
Only at times, the curtain of the pupils lifts, quietly. An image enters in, rushes down through the tensed, arrested muscles, plunges into the heart and is gone.
**It can be frustrating, so give yourself a break, you’ve been struggling all your life, you have been living with one hand tied behind your back, get diagnosed. Find your thing, find your superpower and dive deep down into it, become a master of it!!
Find your tribe, you will eventually discover that your tribe are your avid supporters, because they understand how you feel
Keep going, loads of people I know who are incredibly successful have ADHD, they have taken control of it and make it work for them, not against them
Help your children, I wish I had been diagnosed early, it would have made a huge difference in my life and my belief about myself during my most important developmental years
Be compassionate to others, If you don’t have ADHD, then it can be difficult to understand why people like me struggle with some of what you might consider the more basic things in life, and that's why we think we should hide it
It can be easy to make flippant statements around your thoughts on how it all works from your perspective. And that's one of the biggest issues we have, only seeing things from our perspective. As a species and a society, we have to evolve
Our prisons are full of people who might not have needed to end up there, I’ve seen such wasted talent when I worked in them
There are many issues that stem from us living in a world where we only show the glossy and positive side of our lives
Back then I never saw other people like me suffering, so I felt even more alone, it’s time to change this, we can help others by sharing our stories and our experiences
The world is not black and white, or right and wrong
It’s different needs for different people
And that’s all about basic respect for our fellow humans
