There could be list of reasons,
Ego, putting someone down makes himself feel better about himself, if you say he was bullied, he may have low self esteem, bullying someone else he feels is weaker may increase his self esteem.
Jealousy and loneliness, his friend would rather spend time with someone else, so he is putting derek down, so Martin chills with him asif instead
He may be gay himself, and putting down derek may make people think he isn’t gay
He may have been taught that homosexuality is not ethical by family, tv, friends etc. And/Or not corrected by friends family, tv, friends it’s okay.

They should of bring Asif back especially that episode where Martin reunited with his school friends the episode when Ruby got raped it’s unfortunate because Asif seemed like a regular now he passed away Eastenders didn’t even pay tribute to him 🤷♂️
