  • Apparently, our home country of Singapore has been recently named the 6th Blue Zone! At first, we thought it was fake news 😅 but when we realized it wasn’t, we were intrigued. So, we watched the new Netflix docuseries Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones, read Dan Buettner’s new book (particularly the chapter on Singapore), and here are our thoughts.
Does Singapore deserve to be called a Blue Zone? What’s our secret? Are Singaporeans actually healthy and happy? Watch on to find out!

More than a month since our last upload, did you miss us?! 😉 Two questions today:
Q1. Where are you from, and what’s the life expectancy of your country?
Q2. How do you like this new animated style??
P.S. here's an accompanying article with additional info: medium.com/@thoughtworthyco/sg-blue-zone-dc309e227d25

Great to see a new video and ya'll!
The new animated style is cool and definitely unique for sure (at least I haven't seen many videos like this). Have to admit though, not really "used" to it yet and would need some time to warm up to it. I do enjoy the b-rolls as usual. :)

I already knew this and I am so excited that I will be coming to Singapore for Christmas. I have been a supporter of yours since the beginning so it will be amazing to see the country where you produce such excellently thought out content. I completely agree with everything you have said and in fact, Okinawa is probably no longer going to be considered a Blue Zone as its literally gone in the opposite direction due to the influx of fast food facilities I think mainly to do with the American Airforce Base and all that it brings with it. However, although your points are pretty accurate, compared to other countries, you are the best of the bunch. You have done the best with what you have an in fact, excelled so with the very sad possibility of modern life encroaching on all the Blue Zones, the model of Singapore is the new way forward so that is a main reason I think. Q1 England. 80.9 years Q2 I prefer to see you guys but for this type of content where its more factual, it is a good choice.

True, we're definitely grateful for what our country has done right. In the end it's all about finding a balance and we think a better balance can still be found; there's always room for improvement! Thanks for sharing, we hope you enjoy your time in Singapore 🙌❤️

This is reductive for the USA though. That averrage is drastically lower some places. You may also be looking at inaccurate averages.
It's best to get the numbers from multiple sources and take a mean average due to this.

Our Singapore obesity ranking by country is ranked 147 out of 200 countries in the world behind countries like Malaysia, Thailand and even China. This means that developed countries despite being richer and having more options doesn’t only mean choosing the option to gorge ourselves silly, but also have the means to eat modestly and choose healthier costlier options.

Nice animation stile and critique. How is the lifestyle of those above 70 years old in Singapore? How does it compare with the lifestyle of those who are now in their 30-50s? I felt you were talking about the "modern lifestyle" but they designated it a blue zone because of the older cohorts and not people who are younger. I'm assuming not many 70-90 year olds order food delivery for instance. It seems like it is a confluence of good healthcare in the last decades and good lifestyle for those who are now old. The points you made might explain if life expectancy gets lower in the future (see the USA, where life expectancy is currently declining).

    • @ThoughtworthyCo
      @ThoughtworthyCo  Před 9 měsíci

Good points. From our understanding, Singapore was designated a Blue Zone more so due to plans we’ve enacted and policies we’ve implemented rather than anything lifestyle-related. They’re essentially saying we’re the “future” of what a Blue Zone should/would look like. We do have many good initiatives that promote health and well-being, but effectively, it’s not substantial enough (in our opinion) to overshadow the fact we just have good healthcare, and that citizens can afford it.
Actually, barely anything was mentioned about our people’s lifestyles in the new book and Netflix series, perhaps because there are no meaningful patterns. All in all, it’s probably down to good timing. Our life expectancy isn't that much different from say, South Korea or Hong Kong, but the rapid increase in our life expectancy coinciding with the rapid rise of our economy, may have given the illusion that we’ve found the secret to aging well. (We haven't. At least, not yet!)

Life expectancy here in Canada is 83. But we're not healthy: 70% are overweight (BMI >25) and 29% are obese. My plan for living to a ripe old age is to 1) avoid hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance, and 2) avoid chronic inflammation by not exposing myself to the usual suspects of inflammation triggers. I'll let you know in 50 years how it goes. :)
The animation is fine, but the stock footage is better.

That the runway seems to be, or is on average long or longer is fairly irrelevant as you guys conclude. While there is a difference in tone, I sense there’s an agreement that something is not quite right, that something is perhaps even sick in society. IMO there’s a legacy and perhaps even debt from generations of unreconciled trauma. Passed one to another. In all that time eyes are averted to materialism, consumerism, a hamster wheel of anxiety (which I sense your videos speak to in contrasting to the idea of ‘Minimalism’). The culture does not support individuals to develop and mature emotionally. Itself brings up a point that getting biologically older does not equate that one is also maturing.
Throwing money at problems is a privilege and a crutch. The latter has tilted towards a gap in true leadership. Perhaps excellent managers yes but not leadership.
An individual’s health is intricately tied in to the broader environment. The health of that broader environment rests on leadership. The problem isn’t a shortage on resources and managers. It’s leadership at all levels and in all capacities to see the crux of the matter and to lead.

The concept of blue zones was used as antimeat propaganda, because of that some would be zones were left out because they supported meat heavy diets. In any case, no part of the world (except perhaps Antarctica? lol) is immune from the unhealthy and sedentary way of modern life. We all have to make a conscious effort to fight those ill effects.

@therealjenniferr - Inuit living a traditional (meat-based, no carb diet): “Life expectancy at age 1 for the Inuit household population was 70.0 years for Inuit males and 76.1 years for Inuit females, which is 11.4 (95% CI 9.2; 13.6) and 11.2 (95% CI 8.3; 14.2) years shorter than for the non-Indigenous population.””

@therealjenniferr - Maasai people’s life expectancy: Maasai Diet - Evidently, this causes them to be the People with the lowest life expectancy in the whole world. The average male lives to the age of 42, whilst the women live until the age of just 44.

@@patnewson6908 you are spouting the propaganda you have been trained to spout - I recommend consuming sources of information that are not YOUR typical source. I can't defend that because you are going to believe the information you already consumed. A human flaw. I don't have the time or bandwidth to argue with someone who has their mind made up. It's also not my responsibility to do your homework. If you want to read a good source about why meat was demonized incorrectly please read Nina Teicholz's "The Big Fat Surprise." Have a good one.
