George Hurley Interview here.. • CORONA, Minutemen STOR...
If you are really interested in the Minutemen ,Google "A Wailing of a Town" by Craig Ibarra for their true Pedro history. I finished it recently and am very impressed. I thought I knew everything. Good luck finding it.
NOTES JUNE 2, 2015
NEW- The complete footage from the same daÿ. Watch around 20 minutes of footage never seen before. Uploaded September 1, 2022 and is here- • Minutemen in Concert a... Enjoy
D. Boons last Pedro gig ever on was Nov. 16, 1985. Corona is used with permission via drummer George Hurley who co-wrote the music (still un-credited) with the late guitarist . It's about the contrast of 2 neighboring countries, US and Mexico and really the huge contrasting inherited economic differences between the North and South American continents. D Boone was inspired to write the lyrics when the band visited La Salinas beach south of Tijuana due that nights Black Flag gig had been interrupted by the Federalie's pointing machine guns and such... so at the beach for a few days, a woman with torn up shoes was spotted trash digging for bottles to return for the deposit. George and D Boone called her over and gave her a couple cases of empty Coronas. The songs meaning is defined by the last few lines,
"I could see it in her eyes"
"I only had a Corona"
" Five cent deposit" .
If you actually read them yourself, you can see that the song has nothing in common with Jackasses or drunken pranks. It's a political song.
What they could see in her eyes refers to what George described to me as a permanent kind of sadness. Obvious before, and still there after she got enough corona empties to overflow the tote bag she was carrying. "That kind of permanent sadness doesn't go away". and "How proud can you be when you are living off of foreigners trash"? he also said.
The Jackass franchise has grossed $490 million so far. That's almost half a billion dollars as of today. June 2, 2015.
Coronas signature countrified opening guitar lick is still (over) used by MTV as the Jackass theme lick intro. George had not seen dime one from Corona or any other minutemen song until very recently (25 years later) I'm happy to report, even though for many, many years SST Records had been selling greatest hits CD's and T' shirts online from Texas.
This Video was shot on 3/4" tape by Bob Hicks (moi) and S. Kirk Nelson for a local cable access show, "Sounds of South Bay" that aired in 1985. The Minutemen segment was never used.
They had just got back from a successful southern tour opening (and doing the final encores) for REM. They were on their way.....
" Minutemen" was also an insider comic term referring to the bands sexual stamina.
D. Boone died sick and asleep, ejected from the back of his own van his girlfriend Linda Kite was driving to Arizona in to see her Mom for Christmas on Dec. 22 1985, about 5 weeks after this video was shot.
CORONA LYRICS
The people will survive
In their environment
The dirt, scarcity, and the emptiness
Of our South
The injustice of our greed
The practice we inherit
The dirt, scarcity and the emptiness
Of our South
I could see it in her eyes
There on the beach
I only had a Corona
Five cent deposit - Hudba
I hear that opening riff right before I'm about to make any stupid decision
Haha I like you
No you don’t
Jeff Panetta stfu kid
Telling you dont be a jackass 😂
Jeff Panetta come on man it’s a jackass reference. This is the theme song
the perfect band. just 3 talented normal guys that deserved success.
normal?
They didn't want it
Benjamin Bennett They left their mark on culture in a way few can or will, what a thing to aspire to-day!?
They didn’t want success. They were just 3 dudes who loved making music.
Pretty sure they held down full time jobs too
I wish normal was these guys
Damn he's a beast guitarist, he makes the guitar look effortless to play
Jumping around like that? No doubt. Talented. RIP Boone.
Jumpin around...right hand locked in
Surely, it's not "shred a thousand notes", but that rhythm guitar is full of swing and a lot said "shredders" can't even get something close to that.
songs pretty easy to play, 2 fingers up and down neck, fills a lil harder though.
It doesn't take much effort. Easy to play.
I was at this show. So amazing. I was lucky enough to be living right across the street from Angel's Gate. Long live D. Long live The Minutemen.
Christian Moreno what happened to d boon always knew watt n minutemen but like i just realized this was king of the hill .was a thrasher n hip hop bug i always would hear d boon this n that seems like a legend im smoking one for ol D!
You were definitely watching legends.
Where is the rest of this set!?!?!
I took the set list from this show.
@@Tucko1 You're not a real person.
one of the greatest punk songs: short, classic riff, political.
This show was on November 16, 1985 at Angels Gate Amphitheater in San Pedro, CA. The Minutemen's last show ever was on December 13, 1985 in Charlotte, NC, on the REM tour. D. Boon died on December 22, 1985. RIP D. BOON.
Thank you.
I was only 3.
Ah... the minutemen. One of the most underrated punk bands out there. They combined folk elements with alternative, and funk. RIP D Boon.
I love watching D Boon floating across the stage like some mondo caffeinated cherub.
I wasn't around for the Minutemen, but watching their live videos makes it seem like D Boon isn't even dead. So much satisfaction and expression. I absolutely love this fucking band.

I was there that day. Boon said it was the only set they've ever finished in Pedro without the cops showing up. Aside from this show, I saw them a few other times within weeks, including an amazingly long set at a Cal State LB noontime bar gig. Good times.
I only played live once. The police were there from the beginning. Didn't stop people from throwing cans at me though.
Was that at The Nugget at CSULB?
@@Menig Yes, it was at the Nugget. I swear they played for over 2 hours. Great show.
Why did the cops showed up at Minutemen's gig? Were they harassed by them like Black Flag?
In 2000 Watt, as administrator of the band's publishing, allowed the automaker Volvo to use the Boon instrumental "Love Dance" (from Double Nickels) in a car ad. Boon's royalties were paid to his father, who was suffering from emphysema. Watt simply refers to the decision as a way for Boon to help his father from beyond the grave.[10] wikipedia
I believe Mike used alot of is Jackass money to help Boons dad as well.
Or so I read some time back.
Everson Zoio's theme song
Minuteman was highly underrated and deserves more recognition than they get
They’re not underrated at all. This comment is ludicrous
@@jeff7764 you’re entitled to your wrong opinion 🥰
@@TheBatwave please explain to me how they’re underrated? Year after year, decade after decade they are constantly on every major publications greatest lists
@@jeff7764 I think there is a difference between people already in the know praising them versus the general public not knowing who they are. Not saying green day isn't good, but more people would be less hesitant to say green day is amazing than they would the minutemen
In 2013 I had dreams about D. Boon still playing gigs.
We jam econo. Minutemen forever.
we are all here for the same reason
jackass forever in september 2021
Watching The Minutemen play live is totally inspiring. Seeing three guys who live, eat, breath and drink their music and you can tell watching them live that they love it and don't give a shit what anybody else thinks...that's the true definition of what punk rock is to me.
I am in process of reading Craig Ibarra's book, A Wailing of a Town... Got it at a celebration of D. Boon's birthday at The Sardine in Pedro on April 1st (2024). It was a fascinating era of music. D. Boon, I didn't know you but wish I had. ❤🙏
R.I.P D Boon
Amen
Love The Minutemen. D. Boone could certainly cut some moves whilst playing. Legend.
Been listening to them since I was 14 but was 42 when I found out this is great song to play, If you can get a tele and turn up the treble all the way, bass and mids down its not hard to slide away at that intro.. D's energy says the it all.
There is a german youtuber called "drachenlord" which basicly means "dragonlord" (lord of dragons) which looks exactly like the guy at the beginning who's jumping around like he's having a bunch of fun (which certainly is the opposite of the youtubers life)
I've loved this band for longed than I've known about dragon Lord... By godd u r right I can't look at d the same again haha (well when he has long hair at least)
IT DOES LOOK LIKE HIM
meddl loide
We're lucky to live in a time when men like him paved the way for the rest of us.
Where did you go on that road these men paved?
@@RidgeRunner-lz5ko ... that's a long and personal fuckin' story bud 🤘
I like how the bass player seems to be amused by the singer's dancing moves, like it was the first time he ever saw it
Coronavirus brought me here. HBD Boon!
Bagui é hardcore

Hi I'm minutemen and this is "corona virus"
RIP D. Boon, a great band :(
I knew parts of this story but in tears reading your moving recount. Beautifully written and so important to remember, thank you!
for a bigger guy, D Boon had a lot of energy. Sad that he left us way too soon.
I saw them at the Circle A ranch in Dallas. D Boon was jumping around so much the stage was shaking. Billy Bragg was supposed to open up but didn't make it through customs. He's on the T-shirt but it wasn't at the show.
D Boon is so incredibly talented. It's almost hard to watch these videos.
Hi I’m Johnny Knoxville…and this is 80s styles
I'm a huge fan of Minutemen and post-punk in general, and I thought Jackass's use of this was very fitting and brought them to a wider audience.
Thanks for the video. I believe I read an interview with Mike Watt in which he specifically notes that D. Boon died in a Dodge van, not an Econoline.
I've always loved this song and now I know a bit more about the band. I love these kind of surprises. You learn something new every day. Well, I try to anway.

One of my favorite bands ever. Meat puppets too
Definition of an underrated band.
D Boon was the fuckin man
from Brazil very good son
Thank you for this. Excellent video. Great description in the narrative.
Great job, putting this online. The best of the best...I didn't know him, but I loved their music, and their heads. In my mind, I still see them at Al's Bar.
I wish I'd met D Boon. The nearest I got was listening to Mike Watt talk to Ed Crawford about D. in my kitchen, saying how much D. would love touring around Europe, when fIREHOSE were supporting Sonic Youth. Getting them to sign all my Minutemen records just brought it home how much he was missed.
Austin Lucas
Hmm, don't know of any Camper/Crawford or Nirvana connection I have to say, apart from my own connection of having bootlegged all those bands back in the Eighties, and Nirvana having covered my brother's ex-girlfriends songs!
Austin Lucas
Just shows you what you can do if you take the initiative!
Austin Lucas
Not just yours, mine have vanished too on occasion.
+terrypussypower I met Boon and the others many times over the years, and was at this show too. He was every bit as cool as you would imagine. All the Minutemen are stand-up dudes.
really fantastic notes and context in here, thanks Bob!
I grew up listening to them.. Thanks for posting
So much energy, really having fun
Thank you so much for sharing this video and your background information about it. 🙏
this is a prophetic song
I smile watching D Boon bounce around the stage.
Wow soo bad ass boons energy is just un matched. And all to his his own to forever own . such a brilliant player writer human... R.i.p.
They may well my favorite band, ever. Love the energy.
Good song, lots of positive energy, especially the late D Boon jumping around. Well done.

I love u D Boon! Shine on D! Minutemen music added fun to my teenage years. And now 😻😁🎯💯🎼🎶☄️🍪❄️🍍👏🐐🤘🏼❣️❤️❤️
Yeah it's amazing how he moves about and still is able to play and sing.
I assumed this band were a one hit wonder, a country band with a little ditty that got used on the Jackass shows. I slept on this band for the longest time. The Minutemen are AMAZING seek out their music and the documentar(ies) on them
I was at their last show....they opened for REM in Charlotte NC Dec. 13 1985...D. died a few days later.
Beautiful song!!! 🥂🎉🥳🎈🎊🍾👯♀️
