      @davidofhasbro You must not have listened to the studio version on Creatures Of The Night. The bass guitar is much heavier on the studio version and Paul Stanley does not hold the final notes at the end. KISS is a fantastic far different animal live. This is just one of many examples of how much their songs change, often for the better, live.

  • @ericwalker8636
    @ericwalker8636 Před 3 lety +57

    They started in the early 70s and the reason they went with the wild look and the makeup is that they wanted to put together a show that would blow everybody's mind. Then in the 80s, as they evolved, they decided to drop all that and perform as a straight ahead rock band. This was the MTV Unplugged special that spearheaded Paul's and Gene's reunion with original members Ace and Peter (lead guitar and drums, respectively). The reunion brought back the costumes and makeup which they've kept ever since, despite Ace and Peter leaving the band a second time. They've had a few turkeys, but for the most part they've put out a lot of phenomenal music over the years. They definitely have A LOT more talent than some people give them credit for.

      Pauls vocals were pre recorded for the farewell tour, all their recent tours. He lost his trademark range, by 2000. Any kiss fan can tell that, hell. Paul admits it now. Its why he isnt doing new kiss material, but his soul music. One of the best voices in rock, but, in his 70s, he cant sing like he did in his 20s-40s. This unplugged performance was the mecca for fans. It was the reunion and everyone was at their best.

In 2000 he still had most of his range and still sounded great. He had some issues on some dates of the 2004 Rock The Nation tour, and he pushed through it - something he would continue to do over the next several years, absolutely shredding his voice.

That note he holds...and he is sitting down..that is extreme vocal and diaphragm control.. not many these days could do this. Also, he is completely deaf in his right ear. this was from an MTV concert, and at the end, brought back two original members to play, Ace and Peter. this was a great time in their career. back in 1988 my high school had a lip sync and my three friend did KISS Detroit rock City in make up, we came in second place, the following semester, they had again but with the second high school in our town. we were asked by the teacher in charge to do the same act again. we wanted to do different song, since it was two day event, one for fun, one for voting, they let us pick second song for the fun night. we picked I love it loud, the teacher said it wasnt good enough? so we were slow to give new song, we took beginning of Beth, and at pause in song went into Love gun.. the guy on drums was on top of a stage piece that was part of the stage craft class.. he came walking down lip singing Beth, tossed two roses out to audience (one to the VP of school) then got back to his drums right when the break between happened, and into love gun... crowd went crazy!! sorry reliving my glory days... I wish we had video of this day...

    When you tour as relentlessly as they did, year in, year out, you get VERY good at what you do. One thing to consider-he is playing rhythm guitar as well as singing like that. In 1999 Paul played one of the last Phantoms of the Opera. No one sounds like Paul Stanley.

    One of, if not THE best MTV Unplugged performances ever. With some people, Kiss can't win ... when they were in their 70s heyday everyone said "they can't play, it's all about the makeup and costumes" but when they took it off in 1983 those same people said "they're like any other hair band ... they need to go back to the costumes & big show" LOL But hey, these guys know what they're doing and can hold their own against any band to this day. They are more versatile than most people think and have done everything from very heavy rock to ballads; "I Still Love You' is one of the few that has somewhat of an R&B vibe (as you guys mentioned); another track that has a bit of that without being a straight ballad is "Sure Know Something." Might want to check it out.

    This was back when Paul's voice was at its peak. They had Bruce Kulick on guitar and in my opinion, the best guitarist they ever had. Eric Singer on drums who is only second to Eric Carr...a very close second. Gene...is just Gene. Gene is what people think all rockers should be. The 80s and early 90s they put out their best music. One of the biggest complaints about KISS is they 'sold out.' Somehow these KISS haters think KISS was supposed to be in it for the adulation? Anyone that thinks a band is only in it for the admiration and not the money is fooling themselves. KISS never said they were anything other than a rock band and they wanted to make it big. They wanted to blow up the rock scene with their outrageous look, their hard playing and energetic performance. And they did. Many older fans took Criss and Frehley leaving personally. They felt betrayed. But you can't keep going when certain members do not have the heart for the business. Personal demons entered the mix and were dealt with accordingly. KISS grew, became better. The music was better, Stanley learned that he didn't have to yell constantly and people finally heard his beautiful voice... new fans loved it. New fans loved their shows. Some older fans did too. Music was written and performed by a band that has never had an equal in the business. Paul Stanley may be considered as one of the best frontmen in rock history. His only real competition would be David Lee Roth and Freddie Mercury. And as for longevity, they've lasted longer than any of the newer bands by decades. They're right up there with the likes of Led Zepplin and The Stones. When they retire, it will be sad and an empty space will be left in rock, but it will be a well deserved retirement. A life of music that will be remembered for an eternity! ROCK ON!!!!

      You've articulated it very well, the band's best music was the entire 80's and early 90's. Paul's voice really came into its own, especially delivering such melodic material.
      I trace this shift in their sound, and Paul's vocal approach to his awesome 1978 solo album. You can hear it starting.
      This reaction was so sincere and articulate, really enjoyed listening to this through their ears.

    You're not the only one that thinks Paul had a good voice... in the mid 90s, relatively close to when this show was taped, he did a 6 month stint as the phantom of the ooera in Toronto. This version of i still love you is from 1996, when Paul and gene were 45 and 47 yrs old, and 14 yrs after it appeared on its original album, I've always been impressed by it
