Portland and Indy combo is just the common go-to for newcomers when dealing with higher worlds like 9-12. With a repair kit and decent weapons, they will help a lot in higher levels below World 12.
Yall newcomers can get them pretty much easily before World 6 or even earlier. Use them, grow em, and let them bulldoze those levels until it deemed impossible without ships with specific stats like Extra shields, HP Toughness, AA, and ASWs.

Yeah, I used Indy and Portland with Laffey for the longest time. They were the first of my vanguard to hit level 120 and then 125.
They also shouldn't forget phoenix. She's by far best ship on low cost fleet. She's quite tanky for a CL ..well..i mean she has self heal. She's good at mob fleets

for new player, dont neglect meta ships... for vets, they might not be that useful, but for new player, they are rather power ship that you get for free... when i just started, fusou meta carried me =D
in fact, in my operation siren fleet, gneisenau meta is in my mod fleet.
same here, memphis mea, whilst one of the weakest ships of the meta tier, she hard carried me throughout the early game, which did end up her being my first oath

Kimo, you need to consider how easy or difficult to acquire the ships you are suggesting. Nachi is chapter 8 main champaign.
My early game vanguard was Portland-Indy-Laffey. The second fleet I would take on the map has Shropshire, Fortune, and Achillies. I basically used those six ships almost exclusively until they hit level 120 at which point I started grinding up other ships to eventually replace them.
Spot on comment. I didn't get Nachi until much later in the game, so most newer players will not have her until you can get her to drop from Chapter 8. Portland (and to a lesser extent Indy) are the ships newer players should build up early in the game. On one account, I took Portland and Indy all the way up to level 125 and used them almost everywhere. Used Shropshire a lot as well. This was before unique Augments came and if I remember correctly, before Nachi had a retrofit so Nachi wasn't quite as good without retrofit.
Anyway, I think as they added more retrofits and unique augments for Vanguard ships over time, it allows for newer players to use a greater variety of ships - Shropshire, Nachi, Suffolk, Minne, Houston, Algerie, London are decent options since they all have augments and/or retrofits that boost their performance.
Kimo is a little out of touch with early game.
@@kennynguyen5248 I use the early game levels to initially grind out newly acquired ships. Some players don't want to bother with that and use the exp packets to skip ahead.
I generally try to be strategic and frugal with my resources, hence why after two years I only have 4 rainbow BB guns, only 2 rainbow aircraft, 2 rainbow torps, and just one rainbow anti-air gun.
My tip for new players would be:
It's allright to level your favorites first and beef them up as much as you want. 125, best equipment and of course with an oath ring, because they deserve it.
See how far then can take you, you'd be surprised. Even chapter 13 normal is doable on auto with a bunch of random ships if you equip them right.
And if they struggle, swapping out one backliner of the mob fleet for a healer may just be all it takes to win.
And if even that isn't enough, level up and retrofit San Diego. Whatever fleet she's in becomes functionally immune to Airstrike damage.
And maybe you are only somewhat interested in gameplay, enough to watch this video anyway, but you still prioritize waifu over meta if possible. Maybe you're like me, half competitve but mostly here to see my shipgirls happy. That's fine as well. For me, AL engame gameplay was always a scondary thought.
It's all about collctiong as many shipgirls and beefing up and oathing those I like most. I've been playing for many years and I only just beat 13-4 recently, and am still unable to beat 13-4 hard.
Definitely get Unicorn from 4-4 and Helena from 5-1, these ships are insanely useful even in the hardest content. You can clear 12-4 with a fleet like Tirpitz, Unicorn, Helena and Z23 (or any starter) as long as they are leveled up, tho in this setup Helena is going to take a lot of damage. Throwing in something like Roon or Portland and Enterprise to get a full fleet should give easy time in chapter 12. Enterprise is also very good for 13-4 boss fight.
And even if ur lazy you can jus use guild shop to get unicorn and helena
Funny how when I started I did the opposite, I hard focused on my vanguard because if all of them die then it's gameover but also because they are the one exposed to continuous damage. Meanwhile my backline was kinda whatever. My Laffey and Ayanami carried me through the first 10-11 chapter although the closer you are to chapter 10 the more you'll feel the need for tanky ship. At the time I did Leander retrofit and Cygnet retrofit because cheap unit and to be fair, they arent that bad if you're looking for some cheap option (more Leander than Cygnet tbh ).
Laffey also carried me to chapter 11 and now that she got her upgrade in the form of a class change she continues to carry me beyond.
Portland as your vanguard anchor will carry you through to the endgame. You will have better options by then. PR has many amazing vanguard ships.

I'd say its better to force new players to buy roon m in the core data shop rather than levelling up those purple CAs
It would take new players a while to get 1500 core points. Personally, I'd buy 3 black and white shells, 3 snorkels, 3 pressure resistant hulls, 3 homing beacons, 3 FuMOs, then nothing but cog arrays. Cog arrays will always be needed. That's if I was a newbie of course.
I guess it takes 25 days of chapter 8 hard mode to get Roon mu, so probably a month and a half of getting used to the game while grinding daily hard mode. This is assuming you get enough oil as a new player to grind ship levels to beat chapter 8.
@@klmnts Yes, that's correct unless they have a 2x or 3x core event which makes it go a little faster. If I recall, that doesn't happen often.

I was very lucky to start playing just before the Atelier Ryza event, which gave me a full fleet of extremely solid ships that carried me for most of the game. They're still probably my best general mobbing fleet too. They've got a permanent spot in OpSi for sure.
The sentiment is good. DDs are not tanks, I've suffered a lot trying to do an all DD vanguard. They generally didn't work for me unless I was vastly outleveled for the area.
Started less htan 3 weeks ago with Laffey then got Takao really early so she became my tank then got An Shan who finalized my first real vanguard ^^
Now I've two vanguards : Takao/Helena/Yuudachi for bosses and Yat Sen/An Shan/Chang Chun for mobbing (this one is insane with their sinergy and pretty easy to get rn since An Shan is free from her event and Chang Chun is only 800 guild tokens). All 3 have retrofits and they're crushing everything on their way with Unicorn as healer ngl
my old fleet was:
main - enterprise, nagato (newer-Nelson Ret) and i dont rememder (newer-Unicorn Ret)
vanguard - Laffay Ret, Ayanami Ret & Voroshilov
New planned:
main (done) - Enterprise, Unicorn Ret & Kearsarge
vanguard (leveling up) - Ägir, Laffey2 & probably Guam, maybe someone else like shimikaze.
Lazy question, but are there ANY other vanguard ships besides Agir with Heavy armor?

The only ship I have still out dpsing my Golden Hind/Sao Martin combo is Shimakaze. Is it viable for me to just throw all of my URs into formation?

I love love love vanguards. I have Sara retro and Perseus at 125, and a couple 120s there, but backliner skill interactions are just not as fun as vanguards. I'm grinding a bunch of them to 120. Currently, I'm grinding Yuudachi retro, Noshiro, Jintsuu retro, Laffey II, Guam, and Saint Louis. TBH destroyers are my favorite. My boss vanguard for campaign is a 105 Guam, 115 Sandy, and 125 Hatsuzuki, but that's just for the anti-air. My PVP vanguard has 115 Laffey II, that 125 Hatsuzuki, and a 120 Ingraham with like level 5 skills. I think I hit rank 7 the other day for my server. Having Laffey II and Ingraham on the same team goes HARD but my favorite thing about it is honestly the cool art for their skills. I want a third ship with that same skill art. I think it's so cool seeing my screen light up with those giant blue barrages. It works in campai😅gn, too, but I don't want to use 120+ ships in my mob fleet. Destroyers rock and are my favorite class. I'm not on chapter 15 yet, but I haven't had any issues with survivability with destroyer vanguards so far, even before the recent Laffey II event. For backliners, I'm just training Richelieu and supports.
I'm sure this video may not be the right to ask this, but whatever. I'm trying to beat CH14, but I've already had struggles in CH13.
My mob fleet consists of Victorious, Unicorn, and Suruga, Guam, Laffey II, and Unzen. My boss fleet is AvP, Friedrich der Grosse, and Tirpitz, Roon, Portland, and San Diego. (I play in Auto since my phone sucks ass) I tried to do 14-1 by switching out Unzen with Shimikaze, but after 4 fights their health was depleted. They're very under leveled (100-ish) so, that's probably why that happened, but I'm still not sure. Right now, I'm working on leveling up my mob fleet's vanguard, since Laffey and Guam are around only level 100, and to get Helena for my boss fleet, and that should hopefully fix the problem I've had in CH13 with the boss fights. But I'm still wondering if my fleet composition is alright?
Grind 12-4 until the ships that you want to use in later worlds are at least 120 and check the ACV value of each stage to make sure you have air supremacy.
The moment i realized Kimo has 2 Nachis leveled up!
I think he forgot that Nachi is actually late in the main campaign (chapter 8). I really wish he would consider that when he recommends ships for new players.
to me its not about dps its about xp gain..my main tank are amazon and yuubari both at lv120 and they perfectly carry 11-1 without any healer ship..even at max level they can still contribute to others xp and running without healer i can grind more for fleet tech..unless you wanna run higher maps

Am I the only one who just grinded up almost exclusively whatever super rare ship drop I got from the gachas? I really paid for it later when all my ships were level 70 and I was scrambling for SR Bulins lol

Imho don't recommend PR1 ships they pretty weak, better buy all PR2-3 ships. From Elite ships i can recommend: Helena, Unicorn, Ark Royal, Independence. Also Unicorn such imbalanced atm so you can use her with both fleets (2 ships i mean). Also avoid rare ships (unless PR) coz you will struggle with lack of bullins at start.
There is a reason, Beginner Rewards.
PR1 rewards can be completed twice, also the rewards for PR2 and PR3 (and I assume PR4) have to be unlocked in sequence, you need to complete PR1 missions for PR2 missions to unlock and PR1 and PR2 for PR3 missions to unlock. Eventually you need to do at least one PR1 ship so you might as well get that out of the way when the rewards matter more that later.
Also even if they arent that great anymore, Saint Louis is still a good option just because of sad state of Iris is in relation to vanguard along with the mess that the Libre/Dominion split creates in relation to fleet building in even if its just in case you need Iris Combat XP for a later potential Iris PR ship, Ibuki that isnt bad either as a torpedo heavy cruiser as she gets two torpedo launchers with the rest being of more dubious use, they also arent that hard to get since its not that hard to get a SE vanguard for Ibuki XP and Saint Louis is even easier as being old she needs Eagle Union XP.

That's something that's natural to me in many games. Naturally I will and do move on to using the Beefy and very Beefy ships with more HP as they will last longer in battle. I only use my first fleet to do events until the ships for my new main fleet is ready because my starter fleet I'm aware won't go really far and will struggle as I have seen from the SK event that I couldn't do T4 but now I'm completing events ad doing hard mode now too, not yet SP. Nachi I don't have yet but I did see her stats not to long ago and yeah she be really good to have, very Beefy in HP :D
