Do you like poetry? I’ve read ‘The Wasteland’ it’s wonderfully crazy. Read Donne as well

How has your experience with books that have been adapted to TV or film? Do u tend to read the book first or watch the movie and then hunt the book down?

Reading for pleasure is still underrated by a large group of people :) I have always identified myself as a reader even though there have been a few years when I haven't read one single book! So much of other things in life is going on and it will always have an impact on how much and what we read. This year I have read much more than ever but it doesn't really matter, for me being a reader means just loving to read :)

    1. What if you read only one book but that one book was Ulysses, Don Quixote, Moby Dick, Swann's Way? What if you annotated it, followed a reading companion and at the end had a clear idea of it?
    2. What if a person only read six books but they are all by Shakespeare and it was also this deep kind of reading?
    3. What if they read things that cannot be quantified on Goodreads? What if they read one screenplay or academic paper a week? What if they dip in and out of reference books to work on their knowledge of eighteenth century Eastern Europe or burial rites in the West, having an already vast knowledge on these things?

Why do we really care for being called "readers"? Our value is not in a label... We can be readers for others, but we can also be readers for ourselves, and no one can meddle in that. If I feel I am an artist, then I am an artist, even if I don't sell art! Haha Let's call ourselves whatever we want! Let's be whoever we want to be. 🙏

Long ago a friend of mine advised me to have a river book. That is a book that one could step into at any point and put down at any point. It should be a big fat book that is beautifully written. Throw in a book of poetry and then you are really set to go. I do this all the time now. A bit here and a bit there on a daily basis. I also read other books cover to cover and at the same time take a dip in my river books. I have three such books. It is like good friends visiting.

Your comment about Donna Tartt is 100% true - I still have to read The Little Friend, but I'm saving it for when I'm truly desperate for something new from her, and contenting myself with rereading The Secret History and The Goldfinch. Good luck on your reading challenge!

I find that the genre of books I read really matters. Reading classics will always take me a lot longer to read than a YA or historical fiction novel. I also had to change my reading goal part way through the year due to school and other life events, which I at first felt terrible about. It's always nice to be able to relate to other readers as we can get caught up purely in the quantity of books we consume when it really should be about quality and what we've learned from these texts. As a history major in the last year of my undergraduate studies, I read a lot of articles and parts of books to use for my papers, which counts as reading, yet not an entire book. This book culture obsesses over books being the only form of content you can count as reading when we consume so many other forms of writing, and can learn so much from them.

I’ve been in a reading slump for several years. I have stacks of unread books all over the house. My mind has been so restless due to illness and such. I did however move into acting. A different art form, yes, but not the same.

You are definitely a reader! Though, like many others on social media I was under the impression that you read far more books than myself. In fact, I have definitely looked at your instagram and had thoughts about how wonderful it would be to work in publishing, have free books just waiting for me at work, and spend tons of time in trendy bookstores in London. It's hard to get an accurate impression of people's lives through Instagram or Booktube, and it's very easy to idealize people. There are benefits to reading a ton of books, but it's far more important to be able to say something meaningful about what you have read (which you always do!) Good luck with your reading goal!! :)

Blatantly Bookish I do spend a lot of time in book shops that’s true 🤣 Social media is an odd one - I feel like my IG is very true to my life and I never really think too much about how I come across online but like everyone I’m not posting about the shit things going on behind the scenes. The reality of publishing is that I spend long hours working on lots of different books so by the time I get home I’m tired... but that hasn’t always been the case. This year has just been a tough year where I’ve nearly finished about 50 but just haven’t quite made it to the end. Here’s to next year!!

@@Claire_Fenby I'm glad that you do really spend a lot of time in cute bookshops! I hope next year isn't quite as tough for you and me both! Here's to next year! :)

Can totally relate to this. I barely read in 2019! I also think working in publishing can give you a sense of overwhelm when it comes to reading - so much to read and keep up with! Fab video Claire x

Thanks for sharing those answers. I always think that the label reader is something that the internet brought on for me. Before I joined the bookish online community I didn't reflect on my reading as much as I have done since then. Before reading was just simply something I did, like sports or watching TV. But now I am much more looking into the amount of books, whyt kind of books and the format I use and challenges and reading goals. Those were very limited before booktube.

I think a reader is anyone who is passionate about books and reads when they are able to and also buys books incessantly! Especially when they can't afford it! Lol

I 100% feel what you're saying in this video. I have read so much more this year because I've ser myself timers on my social media and make sure I read rather than go on instagram which makes me feel so so much better MH wise! Happy Christmas Claire! Xxxx

Also I definitely feel that after doing a Lit degree your attitude to reading and books can change so much - it's taken me a while to get back into just loving reading again and not tearing through books because I simply have to!

I don’t know whether you’ll have this where you live, but where I am the local library service has a thing called borrowbox where you can download free audiobooks through an app on your phone

Abby Mcmurdo They do but unfortunately the selection is not very good. Another reason why we need to fight for library funding.

Hi Claire. I hope you had a lovely New year's Eve. This was a really interesting video! I think that my reading changed dramatically when I discovered book tube and through it Good reads. Before either of these media's came into my life my reading was all over the place. I read vivaciously but in no way I could quantify. So I read magazine and newspaper articles, I would flit between short story collection but never finish the whole book. In fact I have three short story collections on my shelf all of which I have read and reread stories from and not other stories from. I would reread chunks of my favourite scenes from books that I loved. I would read sections of non fiction books almost like you do when you research and not read the whole book. I would indulge in some funny poetry or limericks. I would read letters from collections and antlogies. I would read comics and comic strips. Recipes, craft books etc etc. But hardly anything I read could I put down on what now is a Good read challenge because it only counts the full books you read and nothing else. So my reading changed. It became structured, organized, goal driven and about achievement. About doing something. I'm not sure if I really like it. At the end of the year you can look back and yes that sense of achievement feels nice. However I do feel like I've lost a huge part of my own personal reading identity for the sake of a number.

I loved this important video and valued your perspective. It's always reassuring when someone says they're experiencing reader-anxiety. But. I can't help being interested in that tantalizing bit at the end! If it's alright to ask, did you really come from a Catholic background/education /influence or is that just a joke? Also, I most certainly DO wish you luck in your reading goal! That's a clever choice.
