Which Wagner started doing. There is a whole lot of composers who has done this for a long long time before this. Also, Tony Ling. What is "best" is really subjective. I don't find many leitmotif in Shore's scores very strong in character. John Williams, Wagner, is better at this, which is also subjective, but in a analytic view one can shade off the subjective-matter in this context.
What Shore has done in this serie is not really memorable. Take the Two Towers for instance - the leitmotif for Sarumann is not strong. It is weak in character. Take in comparison how much more memorable and stronger the Empire's Theme in Star Wars is. If any of you have strong arguments and descriptions of good leitmotifs in LOTR / Hobbit, let me know. 😀

I personally think Hans Zimmer and John Williams are a step above Howard Shore overall, buthis score for Lotr is the best score I hace ever experienced. It's just not Middle Sarth without that beautiful music. That scene alone, when the Fellowship is walking up that cliff gives me goosebumps every single time!

Cheese Prime Are you a little twelve year old upset that your mother isn’t giving you attention? Because that’s what you’re acting like. Thomas Newman is a good composer, no question. However, Howard Shore created such a diverse musical world, it’s truly a work of art.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy original composition, as a whole, is without a doubt the greatest musical achievement in cinematic history. Songs like Foundations of stone, lighting of the beacons & The bridge of Kazad dum, each alone, technically and emotively demolish everything Hans Zimmer has ever written.
