I love that the Pointer Sister's had hits that allowed each of them to shine as lead singer.
They were for sure one of the greatest music groups ever created.
That's right. All was gifted like that
🔥🔥🔥
That’s the deepest contralto voice I’ve ever heard.
Ruth is a legend.
I can't believe Automatic was initially considered a reject. So glad Ruth and her sisters rescued it and made it the incredible hit song it became!
Well that's how Jackie Wilson's "Lifting Me Higher" was saved. His manager threw the demo in the trash after hearing it and he pick it out of the trash and the rest is history.
@@amazing50000 Ah, had no idea. Thanks for that little nugget of info.
It’s so sad that so many potential songs, rhythms and beats suffer the reject fate. It’s difficult when they have to look at so many options
@@traceyk4531 Another reject was "Kiss From a Rose" by SEAL. He wrote it years before he was famous and thought it was too "mushy & corny". He said he was ashamed of it until his Producer Trevor Horn (of the Buggles fame) heard it and had him record it. It became SEAL's first #1 Song in the US!
And the well deserved Grammy for best vocal arrangement.
That song fit Ruth’s voice perfectly. Some things are just meant to be.
Thanks Ruth for making "Automatic" a hit for the ages🥳.
Ruth made that record a classic we loved her low voice.
“We liked it. We knew we could do it. So we did it.”
Well said Ruth, well said.
I’m only 27 years old and it’s my favorite song by The Pointer Sisters! I actually learned of it from “GTA Vice City”!! 😂
X2!
I love this song and I love "Neutron Dance" and I especially love "Dare Me"
That game gta vice city brought them new fans
Same here. Great game 🎮
Yea, I was so happy to see the song was in GTA Vice City. It was nice to see a new generation enjoy it just as much as I did
I love her low deep voice , it made the song as it is
Iconic
Her deep tone and voice is so dope!
What a nice story! "Automatic" is truly one of the best tracks from the '80s. It's one of those songs that can lift your mood in a second!
Bro she dope as hell
Thank god they snatched it. This is one of the baddest funk jams for any get down. It slaps...
These are the people who made the 80s the 80s
Amazing talent back then
Man, she is so right about everyone thinking that it was STEVIE WONDER !😂😂😂💯
I didn't think it was Stevie, but now I can't un-hear it!
I thought it was the Debarge family myself.
@@TdT2211 100%! I remember arguing w my older sister when she told me this was a Pointer Sisters song. I remember telling her it was El or James Debarge singing. 🤣
@@TMZahida226 life without a search engine was so tough!
So many good PS songs but Automatic is one I could listen to on replay for half an hour.
Takes me back to 1984!!
This Song is a classic
The lady is a genius , for me , best vocal performance ever. She shocked everyone. Brilliant Brilliant lady . Good job Ruth , you are loved 🙏
So glad they made it their own . One of the very best songs that define the eighties for me. Still love it.
I get the same excitement as when a male sings high as I do when a women sing low like this. It’s so sultry and smooth the way Ruth sang this.
Big respect.
Everyone is sick of me playing this song and Ruth's voice is like up there so funky so deep and very futuristic.
I think I will be automatic forever ❤️
I play this song every day
Love this song
Love You My Ruthie. Icon. Pop, Rock, Soul, Gospel, Jazz, Country. The Pointer Sisters did it all. Come Through Rock Hall Of Fame
It's crazy because I'm 46 years old and I never knew or thought that this song was by the Pointer Sisters. Classic!!!
Omgosh!!! When I first heard this song in the 80's-I thought it was Stevie Wonder. It made me smile when I heard Ruth say the same thing 😆👍🏾
Brilliant! I love Ruth’s deep voice ❤️ And one of my favourite songs ever!
Read the whole interview! Well done! I've always loved Ruth's humour. Every time she tells a story, I'm either smiling from ear to ear or laughing out loud. Love this beautiful woman. ❤️
Me too...😁
Ruth really knocked Automatic out of this world with her low keys, junior in highschool..., 🎉 !!!
What a CLASSIC R&B song. That groove is a killer, the vocals are out of this world (as they always are with the Pointer Sisters...), the melody is instantly memorable, the production still sounds fresh after all these years... A perfect 10.
I remember walking around the World's Fair in New Orleans in 1985 looking for my crew I was hanging with. Automatic was playing on the park speakers. I felt the power of the music and her voice going through my bones; so intoxicating! When I found out it was the Pointer Sisters, I was happy it was the group that sung "He's so Shy". I loved that song so much. I felt a connection with them forever since. Music is so powerful!
My experience as well. My family and I were sitting as a pool show, and the performers danced to this song. Her voice scared me a little at first.😄
Her voice is amazing
I'm glad Pointer Sisters took this song. It's an amazing songs, definitely one of my fav songs ever.
This is their best song
I love Mrs Ruthie. Her spirit is fun! I can tell
The Pointer Sisters music is classic, timeless. Good music has no gender or classification; and these ladies put out nothing but good music. I remember the first time I heard Yes We Can; I was at an underground dance club in the East Village in NYC. The beat was out of kilter with the songs we were dancing to at the time. We didn’t GAF!! The beat was infectious. We made up dance steps to go with the beat. It was too funky for words!! Same story wit Automatic; beat was out of kilter with the standard Disco music of the day. We couldn’t get on the dance floor fast enough!!! Luv these ladies!!!
Yes as a kid I thought it was a man singing, but was So Excited to learn it was The Pointer Sisters!!!!
Took me a while to believe that deep "Automatic" part was all her too. Had to actually watch her sing it to believe it.
Automatic was slept on, one of MANY pointer sister hits!
Talented to be able to sing low like that
I remember first discovering the pointer sisters through my mom. She used to listen to the pointer sisters, Linda ronstadt, ronnie milsap... but I remember falling in love with this song from the pointer sisters, my favorite song of their entire catalog. Who would have thought that the song was buried in a bunch of tapes tossed to the side? I always loved Ruth's lower register and the production on this song is excellent.
She sounds great on it, it's an awesome song, not until recent years I found out it was The Pointer Sisters who sang it, I had only heard it on the radio for years thinking it was a male lead singer like one of the twins from The Whispers, I was blown away when I found out it was The Pointer Sisters when I bought a greatest hits collection.
When I heard it in 84'- I thought it was Prince!!!
He had another song titled "Automatic" released in 1982, I love both songs!
Truly, this is one of the all time great songs
I was a little Preschooler when this song came out. 🪩🪩🪩🪩 Still my favorite song.
Great job!!! And looks amazing! And I'm the guitarist for The Pointer Sisters for the last 12 years! Love the perspective so people can hear the bts of what brought about these incredible moments in music history! Once again, great job
You weren’t there in their heyday.
@@mediaguy4037 over the last 12 years there has been plenty of “hey”. Aside from last year we traveled on average to at least 8 or 12 countries per year not to mention the whole of the United States. All the guitarist that have played the gig are good friends of mine as well so I haven’t been with them forever. Not certain what your comment means but I’m very much apart of the history of this group as well as many other legendary groups and artists. It’s been my day job for 40 plus years. Not to mention I own a Entertainment and Film company now as a result of it.
@@indyflyghtentertainment Oh no I wasn't insulting you or anything. I'm 30 years old and I really like their music. It was a totally unique sound they had back in the 80's, almost like an electro funk pop style.
Our Own West Oakland.CA Ruth Pointer Of The Amazing The Pointer Sisters 🎵😀🎵
I love love how deep her voice is!!! That’s me in the flesh. I’m a lot younger so I grew up singing Toni Braxton.
Love you Ruth your the bomb.
Her laugh is intoxicating
Legend, and one of the best songs of the 80s.
My favorite song by them. Loved this song and then it came out on vice city. It’s funny I won’t hear it for years then it’ll pop up somewhere and I have it stuck on repeat for weeks.
I love you Mrs. Ruthie ❤❤❤❤
I am one of the ones, who thought it was Stevie Wonder. Even after I found out it was the Pointer Sisters, I had to remember it wasn't Stevie. Great Song.
Ultimate 80s one of my favorite songs
I bet she enjoys all the trolling she's doing with this song up to this day. She definitely owns this song.
I remember when this song came out when I was a kid. Didn't realize it was the Pointer Sisters until a few years later 😅. Didn't think it was Stevie though 😆.
This and Neutron Dance are tied as my favorite PS songs.
RIP to them ❤️
They had such a great, unique sound and so much talent!
My favorite song! She killed it at that time some were like wow! Is that a man ! Not at all. It was Ruth using her lower register.
Love the Pointer Sisters. Such a great song.
I still love them.
Ruth is so beautiful!
Love that song and her deep vocals!
I have to admit, I always thought it was a dude singing those parts. What an amazing talent!
Thank you Ruth and Pointer Sisters ^_^ I really love this musical gem !_!
One of my fav songs ever!
AUTOMATIC - THE POINTER SISTERS
A great song to 💃 dance to. I love her voice when she sings!!💝😍💝🙌
Not me! I knew it was Ruthie there! And she does it so well! Singing low that is. Btw I was born in 1982. Lol!
wpghi5 me too...I was in the 10th grade when this came out.
This woman's voice is unique and women who have that deep sound speaks authority. You go girl! ❤
"Everyone thought it was Stevie Wonder!" Laughs
Beautiful ladies 🎶💕🎵
ON MY PLAYLIST AND I JAM TO IT
Great song and singers.
One of my all time favorite songs! Such a intricate production and ingenious lyrics!
The way she said “Everyone thought it was Stevie wonder!!” Lol😂… Dead ass I thought it was him toooooooooo!!! Years ago
I absolutely love them and this song
Great song. That early 80s sync sound mixed with Ruth’s voice.
One of my favorites
Such a fun song!
Iconic.
MAKES ME WONDER WHAT ARE SOME OF THE GREATES SONGS THAT WERE AT FIRST REJECTED FOR WHATEVER REASON,BUT LATER TURNED OUT TO BE A BIG HIT DOWN THE ROAD
Jackie Wilson's 'Lifting Me Higher' was one of them.
This was my first body-poppin' n' lockin' tune! 😎
That's my jam
Was introduce to this amazing song from Vice city.
Wow that's one of their most popular songs.
Love ya Ruth Pointer.its automatic.
My favorite song by them NGL I thought it was dude when I first heard it too! 😊
I have a deep voice and I love to sing, it's very hard to find deep singing girl voices to mimic.
The pointer sisters are something to mimic.
OMGoodness it is you Ruth? Wow Blessed you are. Oh and Denise Williams use to be Stevie Wonder’s. Background session singer. Oh and look up Denise Williams the time she met Prince(The Purple Rain Prince). Y’all keep blessed
I'm going to keep it a buck ! I always thought it was a guy singing this song. I was wrong , it was Ruth Pointer.
Ruth Pointer reminds me of Christine McVie 💜
That's my song!
Alright now 💯🙏🏾
Of course Ruth could sing that low part. 😉
Because she’s a man.
Now i can tell it's Ruth singing the deep part on Automatic ..But when I first heard Automatic as a kid I thought it was the Pointer sisters featuring a male artist ..
So disrespectful to the BEST contralto ever, you’re ignorance is gross. Ruth has 5 kids, and something called vocal range, I know it’s something you’re not used to with today’s “music”, so maybe you should go back to mumble rap.
@@NavOps33 just like your mama!!!
I know Ruth loves women too❤!! We love you too Ruth #ageaintnothingbutanumber
#ruthpointer
#bi
Pointer sisters fucking rock
No wonder this song was very popular except for the voice. We thought is a male but it was a female who sang this song. It was very popular also in the Philippines back in the ’80s
The last one standing.
GTA Vice City introduced me to this song and I'm just now learning that the lead singer was Ruth and not some dude from the 80s 🤯
At least its not that Milli Vanilli dubsmashing it's really her. Some think its a guy singing the first verse on the background....
But its not, just rare for women to have a contralto range type. Talented huh!?
This my shit
