  • When is a tomatillo ripe? you can check with 2 different methods
    1) when the fruit (in the husk) is pushing thru the husk (see video) like the incredible hulk bursting through his shirt
    2) when the husk turns yellow
    let's look at both of these in this short video. Let me know if you have any questions!

    Thank you for going over picking them at any time. I have 6 plants with small to medium fruit but frost is here. I’ve kept them covered but feel I just need to harvest. Thank you!

    Thank you for this information - we were not sure when to pick them. But like tomatoes, we found out that if they were plucked a little early, we can let them sit and they continue ripening - especially in the sun

    Our plants went through a couple of nights of frost. Some are squishy, some firm. All smaller than yours. Probably safe to eat? Going to try them.

    • @OldSchoolPrepper
      @OldSchoolPrepper  Před 10 měsíci +1

      yes, they are safe to eat. The squishy and the firm will still make great sauce... you can even freeze them to make them into something later if you want. If you do that then they will get super squishy when thawed (the cell walls will burst and when thawed they collapse)...so they aren't great for chunky things but a salsa verde (I have a recipe for that) and/or a roasted tomatoe/tomatillo salsa (recipe for that too) are still quite good. Good luck!

      generally in Mexican cooking. You've heard of Salsa Verde? (green sauce) it's what makes enchilada sauce green and is part of the green stuff in some salsas....they taste like a green tomato with lemon. very good. once roasted they get sweet and still have the lemon taste.

      @OldSchoolPrepper  Před 4 lety

      anything you can do with a green tomato you can do with a tomatillo. they are smaller, largest are golf ball size...they have a sour/sweet lemon flavor. I love them. Mostly Salsa Verde and regular salsas.... they caramelize well too

    Can you tell me why my tomatillo plant that’s been so large and Beautiful with lots of fruit, All of a sudden the leafs are turning yellow and limp?

    • @OldSchoolPrepper
      @OldSchoolPrepper  Před 18 dny +1

      yellow and limp but not burned or crunchy (so NOT sunburned) ok so either the bushes are getting too much water or not enough...or they have been over fertilized or are lacking nutrients. Some leaves will turn yellow and fall off because the leaves don't last forever but this is usually a bottom up thing...old leaves turn yellow and die off from the oldest to the newest. I had several plants get droopy and lots of yellow leaves so I went from watering once a day to twice a day (and cut the time from 30 mintues to 15 minutes) and that cured my issue. how often are you watering? how are you watering (by hand/drip system etc) and are you fertilizng if yes how often and with what. If you have good water and just need to fertilize I can walk you through how to do that too.

    • @JuliePresler

      @@OldSchoolPrepper We water every other day, I fertilized with granulated vegetable fertilizer, Can’t remember the name right off hand, Then my husband turned around a week later and put Chicken Manure on it. So I’m wondering if that’s why the leaves are turning yellow. Definitely not sunburned or crunchy. Just yellowing a limpy
