especially when it had an awesome original score. the licensed music really took away from it
The DK rap though?
â@@zaczane Already existed specifically for DK.
He's wrong when he said there was no mario music though. There's a ton of it in the movie
@@amalgamfrostpink5030 BRO!!!! You think I donât know that? I was there when that game released! I was just enjoying its use.

It's an evil cartoon dog with a humanlike personnality...
I just hate how the dog looks like a rejected Secret Life of Pets design
Interestingly enough, the sequence where they fight Bowser using the invincible star was originally going to be set to Jump by Van Halen, instead of the track which ended up being used in the movie with the invincible star theme as the motif.
Apparently there seems to have been this clash between having licensed music and cinematic renditions of iconic themes from the games, which is just baffling to me. Literally every single one of those songs couldâve been replaced by the movieâs original score/game themes and it wouldâve been to the movieâs benefit.
Yeah, that was a problem and it would've ruined the scene. I'm glad they used the star theme.

It depends on the movie, not all animation is for kids, but some is. These aren't mutually exclusive
Yeah, I also dislike the idea that kids media has to be inherently dull or lacking plot. Kids honestly deserve better than half hearted attempts at entertainment
I mean... a medium can be art but that doesn't mean every piece of media from that medium has to be the next great entry in the English literary canon
Video games are art but that doesn't mean a game like Devil May Cry can't be a banger video game even though from a story perspective it kinda sucks balls
â@@lordlubu3029 That's too complicated for some folks to comprehend.
Good thing there's nothing to excuse for, I'm an adult who went with other adults and we all agreed the movie was a 9 or 10/10
NEVER agree with Voosh media takes, he's been given a curse where he exchanged being right about politics with being physically incapable of correctness about anything else
The beginning in Brooklyn establishes that everyone around Mario thinks very little of him except for Luigi. Once he gets to the Mushroom Kingdom he's talked down to and insulted by Peach calling him small, proceeds to get beat down training for a day straight just to end on another failed run, then heads out to get beat down by DK, a blue shell and Bowser before he gets the invinciblity star. The movie continually tells you that Mario's a loser and the through line is him finding a place where he can succeed. That place turned out to be the Mushroom Kingdom instead of with his old boss or failing to fix leaks as a plumber.
That is the character arc yes, but itâs not executed well. The only thing he really does on his own is beat Donkey Kong, but aside from that he requires help. Itâs not a bad thing, but it does hamper the arc. He didnât even finish the training course.
@@Kevo6492 That's sort of the point, is it not? Mario doesn't have his "becoming a hero" moment until he decides to stop hiding and letting everyone else fight and take on Bowser again. After that point he's never put down again
@@rizzardthewizard It canât organically build up to that moment if heâs mostly been helped until then. Like imagine if in the first Iron Man he didnât get out of the terrorist camp mostly on his own accord. He had help sure, but he was the driving force behind his own escape. Imagine if Nick Fury helped him the whole time. It doesnât really build his character.
@@Kevo6492 I see what you're saying, I see it more as him having to grow out of needing to be carried over the course of the movie. Tony Starl is already a billionaire genius inventor at the start of his movie and his arc is about correcting his past moral failures as a weapons dealer. He didn't need to get stronger and independent, he needed to become a better person
@@rizzardthewizard He did need to get independent. Sure, heâs intelligent at the start but heâs clearly being used by Obadiah and the other aspect of his personality at the start is living in the shadow of his father. Part of his moral arc in the first film is dropping Obadiah because of the bad influence he has on Tony. We really donât see Mario as independent at the end too compared to Tony. Sure he needed Pepperâs help at the end but he wouldnât even be there without the suit he created. Mario never did anything like that.
By far my biggest pet peeve from the movie was how one of Mario's family members asks them why they "wear those colored clothes" and they respond with something along the lines of "to make the brand stand out", but then later they show a scene where they're babies and have those same clothes??
that was weird
Baby clothes usually are colorful wtf you on about?
@@Yoshizuyuner the problem is they established those clothes as a new thing they were wearing for the brand, and later say "no nvm they've always worn this"

Edit for clarity đ
No, it was the white gloves.
You know, people say the movie is safe, but realizing that it is basically Wreck it Ralph 2 is the biggest plot twist in recent media.
bro you spelt wRalph rong
Wreck it rally 2 doesn't exist
And toy story 4 by doing nostalgic pandering try to distract from bad writing .
Fortunately there is no character assassination that happen in the mario movie compare to Ralph breaks the internet & Toy story 4
That is not even remotely comparable. Wreck it ralph 2 commits the worst example of character assassination I've ever seen. The mario movie is nowhere near that level.
@@torgal5088 True, but mario has no characters to assassinate, so we can't really compare them like that (maybe this is exaggerating, but beyond the rpgs no mario character compares to first movie Ralph). The similarity is that they are both a committee written nostalgia deluge of shoehorned references (to mario games and disney respectively) . The difference is that Wreck it Ralph 2 has a bad plot as a vehicle, with poorly written characters making dumb decisions, the mario movie has no plot, with cardboard cutouts going through the motions. It's the difference between a pie with no filling and a pie with spoiled filling.
My biggest problem with the Mario movie is that when you get down to it Mario is unimportant to the story, peach is shown to be so capable of every situation sheâs thrown into that the only thing Mario does that you could say is plot important is luring the bomber bill away from the castle and really thatâs about it. The platforming stuff, peach is shown to be better than him at. The fight against the entire wedding, she beat everyone there, she lost her ice power sure but she still beat them all. The fight against donkey Kong Mario had to do and that was purely because they knew that if they had her fight one on one with DK she couldnât walk away from it without getting hit at least once, and because we canât have peach getting hit, this allows Mario his only other chance to shine. Even the finale with the starman debatably she couldâve achieved getting the star and fighting everyone on her own with how capable sheâs shown to be in this movie. That was my biggest irritation looking back at it, that when you get down to it the title of the movie is a lie, it barely features Luigi as being a part of the plot and Mario is made to be pretty useless to the actual plot and story. Sorry to go on for so long but I had to get that off my chest. Am I alone in this thought?
No Youre not alone
Yeah they did Luigi dirty.

It's barely even a movie, more just a collection of references stitched together into the vague resemblance of one.
You can have references form a story. Mario as a franchise has a ton to work with and ways to form references together into a story. Saying you can't is kind of dumb, and the way it was done makes sense for Super Mario. I mean, what kind of proper Mario movie wouldn't have tons of references from the games?
Exactly.
â@@CyberAtlasX1the references are pointless fan service, the whole movie is just a long Disney trailer, it has no heart, sonic movie was much better

In other words, he just couldn't get away from the jackblack voice, so to me, i wasn't listening to Bowser sing, I was listening to the actual character Jack Black sing.

There's not much to criticize because it's just him semi-caustically spewing his opinion that the weak narrative and break pace of the movie makes it bad without much supporting reasoning.
Is he trying to pick a fight?

â@@dont_take_it_personalwhat do you mean? Power Stars, also referred to as Stars, are collectible items introduced in Super Mario 64 that can grant Mario access to more levels in-game, unlike the similar-looking Super Stars, which only give brief invincibility. Super Stars (also written as Superstars), alternatively referred to as Starmen, Star Bonuses, Invincible Starmen, Invincibility Stars, Stars, or Star-Men, are items used in many Mario games, including the Super Mario series and the Mario Kart series.

@@lordlubu3029 false dichotomy fallacy
â@@lordlubu3029 the movie sucked. He wanted a good movie
The biggest problem with the Mario movie is that it's poorly paced and also feels too short. It's a movie where you can tell that, behind the scenes, there is a large pile of ideas and numerous scrapped scenes left on the editing floor to get the movie down to an hour and thirty.
Not only that but there are several scenes which could have been cut entirely, but were left in the movie, like the plumbing gig scene. They could have skipped that scene entirely, but some execs or writers desperately wanted to get the little cameo in, so they kept it in, which was a mistake.
Overall I don't think it's bad, but rather it's just not as good as it should be. To me, I think it's just an average kids movie with a lot of references and subtext that adults can enjoy. But don't see it in theaters, wait for it to be discounted online and enjoy it then.
This is basically what I think. I really enjoyed the movie, but I know there could have been more. I think Nintendo was being incredibly conservative with the movie because of their past movie outings. I don't think they were willing to take the risk of doing anything out there, so they did everything by the book. That's not bad, but it's certainly not inventive or original. I still had a good time with it, though.
See I had free 3D tickets, ngl it looks great in 3D
Absolutely not, the plumbing gig scene was much better content than the overabundance of scenes in the Mushroom Kingdom where characters exposit at Mario. We get rules explanations *so far* into the movie, and it's all in service of staying faithful to the brand rather than because it improves the plot in any way. For example, remember that embarrassing moment where the writers felt the need to have 2 different characters explain to Mario why there are power-ups in the level that Donkey Kong isn't going to use? Thus killing all anticipation they had been building up before the fight scene. The plumbing gig is one of the few occasions where the events of the movie just get to unfold naturally.
I also disagree about it being too short. Even with its short run time, it clearly has very little to say or do aside from "Do you get this reference? How about this one?" At its current length, it's a fun dumb kids movie. If it were longer, it would become torturous.
It doesn't matter what anyone says now, the super Mario bros movie has already made more than a billion dollars and broke several office records. In time to come, no one is going to care about what people are going to say about this movie
This movie has the two things Vaush hates most. Blonde, blue eyed white women in a position of power and Italians.
How I would fix the Mario Movie:
1. Give Mario and Luigi more character development and chemistry.
2. Not have the dog attack scene in the film.
3. Make Bowser more menacing and less of a weirdo.
4. Have Bowser kidnap Peach and try to marry her instead of Luigi. (They both land in the Mushroom Kingdom.)
5. Not put the kongs or the mariokart scene in the film. Instead they should be in the sequel.
6. No licensed songs. Just Mario music.
7. Chris Pratt should actually try as Mario.
8. Mario and Luigi throw Bowser in lava instead of putting the mini mushroom in his mouth. (That's the right way to defeat Bowser.)
While I agree Mario and Luigi need more character development, they *already* have chemistry. They have a strong brotherly love.
Everything else aside from not having the dog attack scene... nah.
2.The scene was not bad
3.He's actually cruel but still being like in the games
4.bro, not everyone wants the same "kidnapping peach" story
5.kongs part was actually good and with some good jokes
6.the songs are still good for the movie

That said, even their worse movies are still marginally better than illumination's typical output post despicable me 1.
I guess I didn't expect much. Just two hours of "turn off your brain at the door"... exactly what I got.
It is not like Mario is liked for its amazing storytelling. Whenever they tried to do it, Miyamoto would stamp it out. They did the Rosalina plotline in Galaxy, Miyamoto took it out for the sequel. Justifying with: *"I've always felt that the Mario games themselves aren't particularly suited to having a very heavy story."*
Mind you, the Rosalina plotline is optional...

Vaush fighting with his audience over the movie was like the MeatCanyon mario video
Oh god, whyâd you have to bring that up? I had just repressed my memory from that disturbing video.
This movie really is like another perfect example of how willing Nintendo fanboys are to mindlessly gobble up safe corporate slop because it has the face of something they like on it, even if it has nothing innovative or interesting going on.
You'd think it wouldn't be this bad in leftist circles at least, but I guess bad media takes, especially when it comes to Nintendo, are a universal thing unaffected by political opinions.
At least we can ignore everything else they have to say.
Hoping at least that the next movie is not going to be made by Illumination, because the combo of them and Nintendo was as much as a nightmare scenario as expected.
And if a Zelda or Metroid movie is going to have a terrible story, I feel the defense of "What did you expect?" is no longer going to fly as well.
Play a game Iâm begging you any Mario game, there has always been a paper thin plot.
I hate to break this to you but Zelda and Metroid plots also tend to have very little going on, both in dialogue and actual plot beats. Metroid especially is praised more so for it atmosphere and environmental storytelling more than it's narrative.
To the people responding the first comment: original products with paper thin plots do not justify an adaptation with equally paper thin plot.
That is just a lazy excuse for a cash grab and only proves OP's point about Nintendo fanboys willing to gobble up safe corporate slop.
@@cormano64 I just think critiques of adaptions involving series with poor narrative shouldn't be so weighted in examining the narrative. If a Zelda adaptation didn't inspire a sense of adventure/showcase interesting problems for link to over come, or a Kirby adaptation didn't manage the balancing act of cutesy presentation with a lurking darkness/eldritch horror I'd be far more disappointed then if they had weak stories.

The dog scene was like the least offensive bad part of the movie.
Vaush was way too disproportionately upset about it lol
Along with Mario's dad being disappointed in him, that's like a perfectly fine conflict if it was just handled well.
The whole Brooklyn section was the part where I was still looking forward to the movie, before it ended up turning into shit quickly.
It's like at the start they at least tried to set up a movie, but once they got to the Mushroom Kingdom, they could go all into just moving from scene to scene and have people clap, because it's the thing they know from that game the one time.

Except it was worse because the master emerald was the entire focus of the plot and constantly built up. It had actually lore and mean for everyone involved. The star was just a maguffin copy, that had no meaning, no lore, and no logic even. The toad kingdom had no army. They beat the DK army without the star. There was literally no point to having it except to have Mario use it in the end. In the most illogical way possible might I add. Bowser had the star. He was right next to it. There was no fight for it. He practically gave it to them.
Miyamoto and Nintendo actively dislike stories and storytelling in games so it makes sense a movie with their input would be aggressively shallow.

Her other strengths are her intelligence. The two brothers interested me more as characters when they were in their own world. It should be the opposite.
Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, has stated that he has always imagined Princess Peach's personality to be the way it is in the movie, therefore, the movie's portrayal of her is accurate, and therefore, your entire comment is wrong.
@@CyberAtlasX1
Sure, but if Miyamoto really felt this way about it, then why has it taken over 35 years to have his vision fully realized?
Kinda contradicts his famous stance on storytelling...
I'm all for a competent, proactive Peach (never hyper-competent tho), but you can't call someone wrong for expecting what 3-4 decades of media has firmly established about a character.
@T J H "In the games, we kept Peach as a damsel in distress who is rescued by Mario for a while, but we wanted to make her a playable character and a more powerful princess", Miyamoto told Variety. "We pushed that even further for the movie". Apparently, Miyamoto had originally wanted Peach to be a strong, powerful princess right from the beginning, but the focus really was on Mario in the early Nintendo games while they had to keep things simple considering the limitations in place at that time.
Modern Mario games push this a lot further.
@@CyberAtlasX1
Well, that makes sense.
I guess...
@MoonPresence-zd4bj he did. He has made Princess Peach playable and worthy of kicking ass in several games, including 2 of the newest upcoming Mario games, one of them where Peach is the main character.
No offense but people who still believe that Hollywood can utilize Japanese products lack common sense. We have seen this so many times were Hollywood tries to utilize a Japanese product and it always fails. We've seen it with Super Mario Bros (1993), Street Fighter (1994), Godzilla (1998), Dragonball Evolution, Godzilla (2014), Detective Pikachu, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Alita: Battle Angel, Godzilla vs Kong and now this movie. Hollywood needs to stay far away from Japanese products because they're irresponsible with them. It's better that they learn from their mistakes and leave Japanese products alone. But knowing them, they're just going to keep milking them for the greed of money. Japan should've never trusted Hollywood to begin with.
I actually liked a some of the examples on your list. Alita battle Angel legitimately is a masterpiece and it has high reviews
Toho loved Godzilla 2014 that's why we got multiple movies afterwards they felt it dude him justice cause it was old school Godzilla for the most part, and detective Pikachu was decent solid 6 or 7 movie probably shouldn't be in theaters but if you saw it on Netflix you wouldn't be mad about it

The Mario movie is legit just cocomelon for adults.
I know itâs like a basic conceit of fiction but movies like these seriously overestimate what the average person can mentally handle. If a giant fire breathing humanoid turtle came out of a portal from another dimension and started trying to kill your two kids, Iâm convinced your mind would just literally break like in a lovecraft story. Thereâs a good chance youâd have an aneurism on the spot. And they just move on afterwards like nothing happened. If you were actually isekaiâd to a place like the mushroom kingdom with no content to frame your experience youâd spend like the first week having a mental breakdown.
And that concept you just said would have been a far more interesting movie than what we got
"Seth Rogen sounded like an impetuous teenager who's somehow the strongest warrior in the kingdom." That's literally Donkey Kong's character to a T. Still Rogen sucked because he wasn't DK, he was Seth Rogen.
Not liking the movie is perfectly a-okay as long as you donât shame people who do like the movie. The vise versa is also true, as in liking the movie is cool, but donât shame people who didnât like it. What Iâm trying to say is that I enjoyed the movie a lot, but I understand why Vaush didnât like it and respect his opinion.
Yeah, my problem with him isn't that didn't like it, this is targeted towards Mario fans first and foremost. My problem with him is insulting people for liking it. "Eat the slop, piggies." What a jerk.
But he's pointing out how lame movies are these day's and the people that like them are also lame. He's right, things are just a poorly thought out compilation of corporate committe approved packaging. He's great in the gameplay medium but doesn't understand the value or interest of Mario as a character. I'm not surprised he didn't push back he probably felt out of his domain.
On the other hand I've heard Nintendo had greater control over the design of the interactive elements in the Nintendo World section of Universal.

Theres actually an obscure Mario Movie from 1986 that was animated. Look it up.
Sonic actually set the bar quite high.
I donât intend to watch video game movies for kids, including the Shadow one (the latter mainly due to an unrelated boycott), but thereâs only so much you can do with a game character. Sonic just so happened to have enough ambiguity in the franchiseâs convoluted lord to make this work well for a live action/hybrid adaptation work.
Mario never had lore simply because âMarioâ is just âGeneric Player 1â. The MC they slap onto nearly EVERY game Nintendo makes that isnât part of an established franchise such as Zelda. I didnât think they would try to squeeze EVERY MARIO GAME into it, but from what the trailer shows me, they did.
Sonic set no bars high
Sonic and Mario movies are both trash.
This is a Mario Movie, not a Mario game. Every movie needs a cohesive plot to justify its existence. Demand more from multi-billion dollar corporations.
I really donât think itâs bad, but the flaws really show once you realize you can critique this movie by using straight up facts.
Like, for example
This movie is corporate: because it literally has a corporation, pointing a gun at another corporation to force them to do exactly what they want.
Or
Itâs soulless: because a story is the soul of a movie, and since this movie literally does not have a story, by definition, that means this movie is soulless.
Which is also crazy is how this film has made over $1 Billion worldwide and don't criticize the film, and you'll get viciously attacked.
Illumination gotta illumination. Their movies are pretty corporate and interchangeable. Plus this one was nostalgia bait.
This isn't just an illumination movie. Nintendo overlooked and heavily assisted with development every step of the way. And besides, by your logic any mario game is nostalgia bait for including mario elements.
@@CyberAtlasX1 i like Mario so I'm not even mad at the movie for including Mario references and easter eggs. It's the fact that it's only that. It's called the Super Mario Bros Movie but it's really just Super Mario Bros Easter Eggs.

The ammount of people going: "Just enjoy, bro. Its fun, bro" is insane to me.
Criticism of a piece of media is not trying to take sway that you enjoyed it dummy, enjoy it but know some people wont and they enjoy talking sbout it.
Thatâs because they have become the part of the media they love.
I always feel like the odd one out everywhere because I love ripping the shit out of things I enjoy. Even the things I should theoretically hold sacred I don't hold sacred, and then you see idiots getting bent out of shape over simple criticism.
The fact that that sounds insane to you makes you sound miserable and pessimistic :/ it's the most normal thing ever to consume media, enjoy it, then say you enjoyed even while talking over haters
I think the insane part is the people in the comment section talking about the Mario movie being kinda disappointing from a writing standpoint as some grave sin
Like somehow animation as a medium is fucked because one dumb fun movie was successful instead of being a piece of art we'd be debating the themes of for the decades or centuries to come
The problem is the high horse way he talks about is. Like, I'm willing to accept that this movie has your standard Illumination problems but at some point you just gotta see all the little background jokes, creative ideas at implementing the whole franchise into one etc.
