@@noorsnotes3467 I mean, he lives in miami. It's very easy to pick up accents, and it makes sense if he is surrounded by people who speak English with a spanish accent, that he would pick it up. Happens to people all the time. I know someone who moved to the Uk as an ADULT, and a few years later there is a note of brit in their accent now that only gets more intense with time. It's human nature to assimilate like that. He is an english native who worked damn hard to be fluent in spanish. Also, yes I know you're joking about him being dominican, but in case new people come, I want them to be able to know this

Créeme. Te entiendo que también pasó lo mismo conmigo, pero tienes que dejar de pensar así lo antes posible. Verás que las cosas cambian cuando pierdes el miedo y empiezas a esforzarte con confianza. Puedes hacerlo!

My wife is Dominican and she only speaks Spanish. When the Coronavirus hit I was stuck at home in the Dominican for 5 months with people that only spoke Spanish. So I learned alot. It was actually hard to speak English when I talked to my family from the states.
These are great tips!! I’m at the intermediate level, and my goal is to speak Spanish without switching to English. It’s definitely a clutch, especially when I know the person I’m talking to knows English. I do love how now when I listen to songs in Spanish, I can pick up lyrics. It’s an amazing feeling!!
I started practicing Spanish with a teacher after half a year if studying Spanish. We talk for 1,5-3 hours per week, and that has helped me a lot! Scary at First, but now We can talk a lot about different stuff. I still make mistakes, but that doesn’t matter

I've been learning Spanish for nearly 3 years. But I only started speaking it a year ago when I started lessons on italki. My level has skyrocketed since then. Don't make the same mistake I did by waiting.
It's scary at first, but it gets easier very quickly. Now I have 1 hour long conversations regularly with interesting people for around only $7 - 10.

Como Dominicano e hispano, me siento orgulloso de ver el progreso de nuestro idioma cómo ha crecido en los últimos años. Recuerdo cuando vine a vivir aquí a Estados Unidos a mediado de la década de los 90s como el francés era el segundo idioma más hablado y como posteriormente el español lo fue destituyendo al punto de desaparecerlo. Antes tu comprabas una licuadora o cualquier cosa y venía en inglés y francés 😂.
Hoy día el español es el segundo idioma más hablado y no solo aquí, si no en todo el mundo.

Yea it’s crazy. Before the pandemic was living in Ecuador and I had gotten my Spanish to an advanced level since moving back to the states I’ve definitely digressed a bit. Full immersion is definitely the key to learning a new language. Obviously you don’t have to move to a new country to do that. Finding ppl in your community or a nearby city to talk to. Reading books or the newspaper. Watching movies, and CZcams videos. Listening to music and podcast
"Talking around it" is one of the absolute best pieces of advice. Te ayuda a usar otro vocabulario y llegar a tener más confianza con el habla. También me dio mucha pena hablar con hispanohablantes por esta mera razón, pero cuando por fin me enteré en este "truco", ya no.
Rickie, estoy totalmente de acuerdo con usted. Tenía un gran amor por el idioma español y aproveché cada oportunidad para aprender tanto como pude. Estudiaba muy tarde en la noche y muy temprano por la mañana. Muchas veces me despertaba de mi sueño para estudiar porque quería dominar el idioma para poder comunicarme con los hablantes nativos. He cometido muchos errores mientras aprendía español, pero siempre hacía mis correcciones. Nunca tuve vergüenza cuando alguien me corrigió, o mejor dicho, nunca me avergonzé cuando alguien me corrigió. Nunca he renunciado aprender porque tengo una gran pasión por el idioma.
Aprendí Español hasta un nivel bien avanzado...pero dejaba de hablar por diez años y olvidé mucho. Es interesante para mi, porque sí entiendo mucho y todavía puedo mirar o leer medios en Español, ¡pero cuando hablo o escribo tengo muchos problemas! Creo que el consejo de quitarse el orgullo es importante para personas en mi situación - todavía pensamos que somos hablantes avanzados, pero no, tenemos que aceptar la verdad, repasar los fundamentos, y practicar mucho.

But seriously what you're saying is so true. I'm definitely that intermediate Spanish speaker who is frustrated that I've been stuck at a plateaus for forever, but doesn't put in consistent work to study. In my case its an ego thing because I find myself rationalizing WHY I don't need to go back and brush up on basic Spanish. "I know more Spanish than most people I know" and "I can hold a (somewhat) deep conversation to help in a workplace setting" have been my excuses. This video really put Spanish learning in perspective for me. I'm going to definitely be more consistent with self learning moving forward. Thank you for this video!

Hi! I’ll give you an advice as a native.
In Spanish most of the times when things end with “o” and “e” such as “teléfono” “peluche”, are masculine, so it would be “el teléfono” “los teléfonos” “el peluche 🧸 “ los peluches” etc...
Now, with female ones still simple. If it ends with the “a” vowel, it’s for sure is female, such as: “la casa 🏠 “ las casas”.
And that’s it, any question I’ll reply it

Thanks for this! Do you have any tips for people who remember this pretty well, but have trouble remembering the exceptions to the rule? Is there any sort of trend at all among those exceptions, or is it just a matter of memorizing each one? Do native spanish speakers ever get a little casual with those and use pronouns interchangeably with some words, in your experience?
@@ItsAsparageese Generally, most words that end with -ma are masculine, because these words derive from Greek and in Greek they are masculine I believe. Some examples include el tema, el aroma, el clima, el cisma, el diagrama, el diploma, etc. Be careful with words that have been shortened. For example, la foto, la moto. these words are shortened from motocicleta, fotografía, etc. Hope this helps a bit. To be honest, I just wanna be able to understand people and be understood, so if I make a little mistake with using the wrong article (el/la), I try not to worry about it as much. I also don't worry that much about my accent either cuz my accent is my accent. It's never gonna change. Once you reach adulthood it's impossible to change your accent. Ask any linguist. Look at Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sofía Vergara. One thing that gets me down is that native spanish speakers are so disgusted and look down on people with gringo accents, but if someone speaks English with a spanish accent that's perfectly fine. That's one thing I find so discouraging and wish that would change, but whatever. haha. sorry. Just venting...
Always feminine, pero existen "el agua" y "el problema." 😅😭 Lo amo, pero siempre hay excepciones en español. Por su puesto, el inglés es más difícil de muchas maneras pero es un alivio que los artículos no tener género.

Estoy completamente de acuerdo contigo y con tus puntos. Me costó muchísimo para alcanzar un nível avanzado y a veces creo que no lo tengo a pesar de lo que me dicen a mis tutores. Llevo casi un año y medio estudiando español y la única cosa que me ayudaba durante todo mi aprendizaje fue consistencia durante todo ese tiempo. El año pasado creo que gasté más tiempo hablando español que el inglés. Empecé una cuenta con Lingoda y tomé una clase al día desde enero a octubre. Luego creé una cuenta en iTalki porque quería y todavía quiero seguir mejorando mi nivel. Quiero que todo el mundo me entienda y quiero entender lo que dicen todas las personas que hablan español. Creo que he cumplido mi primera meta pero las segunda todavía me cuesta. De todas formas la cosa más importante es que no habría tenido este éxito si no hubiera sido tan consistente en mis estudios.

Never be ashamed nor afraid of being corrected by others. Always remember that no one is perfect. Every the native speakers of English and Spanish make errors from time to time. Recently, I was listening to a Colombian Spanish teacher on CZcams whose name is María. She was speaking in Spanish. I understood everything she was saying and I agreed with her. The point she was making was this: as an English student who used to do so well, she thought that there was not English that was too hard for her to understand because she had studied the language at university and did well. It was not until she went to sail on cruise ship she found that she could not understand that type of English that was spoke by those working on ship. Nevertheless, she did not make that keep her down. María decided that she must learn that type of English that was not taught to her at high school and university. I am proud of her.
This definitely helps me. I'm guilty of cruising pass stuff i haven't quite mastered and over whelming myself with new learning material. further more being hesitant to spanish with people i do know just because I'm self conscious.
Listening to this video made me realize just how complicated learning Spanish can be. Seems like there are so many different layers to it.

Shop at Mexican market, go to Iglasia, go to latin dances, musica de los latinos, travel (when we can again, in addition to studying. These are the things I do as well as talking to my dog in Spanish and everything I want to say in normal everyday life I think through how to say it in Spanish and If I dont know, I look it up, I use Pimsler cds in car Every time I drive, Every isle in lowes or any where I scan for people to engage in Spanish with.... so by now youve figured I am just as much of a geek about it as you are jaja. Oh and date solo latinos, no otras:)

si usted tá hablando así... creo que estás avanzado más o menos. Asumo que ya tienes acento español o algo así. si no, usted debe practicar
Puedes ver la lista de calificaciones que te dicen que significa ser de nivel A1, A2, B1, B2 etc. Si puedes hablar de todos los temas de una sección, significa que ya has alcanzado ese nivel. También considera tomando una prueba de competencia.

My biggest mistake is doing too much passive learning (eg: just watching Spanish with subtitles) and thinking that I'm studying! I have a tutor that I talk too now once a week and it really helps and motivates me to learn so I can speak conversationally.

Son muy buenos consejos. Sin embargo, cuando se trata de hablantes de nivel intermedio, creo que este video debería haberse hecho en español. Estudiantes de nivel intermedio han alcanzado un nivel lo suficientemente alto como para que se les enseñe en el idioma que están aprendiendo. Llevo 20 años aprendiendo español y mi consejo para los estudiantes de nivel intermedio es que vean videos en español. Dudo que este comentario me gane un corazoncito rojo, pero creo que vale la pena mencionar.

It you only study or practice once a week or very occasionally you may as well not study at all.. Needs to be daily exercise and 20 minutes is fine if that's all you have.
Okay so my question is what is the best way to learn in chunks? a certain app? listening to music? Watching TV? I've just been on Hellotalk, having conversations, and doing Duolingo. If there is a more effective way, I would love to know. Thanks guys!

Le dije que estoy estudiando español para mi especialización. Me habló en español y le entendí, pero ojalá que dije más que solamente “claro.” Basado en todo eso, me siento que tengo bastante motivación para mover al próximo lado de español...especialmente considerando que en esa situation, pensaba en español aunque no respondí con pila de palabras. Estoy en un nivel en el que puedo tener una conversación con fluidez. PERO, a veces me cuesta unas palabras/artículos y pienso “aaaa que pena jajaja ya debería saber eso!”🤣
Es raro porque todo mis amigos hablan espanol y cuando hablan es desmasiado rapido no puedo síguela. So i get discourage i should try to do more 1 on 1 but i feel like its too time consuming which is ironic because i was there when one of my friend was learning english helping him, answering his question. But when i ask questions its like idk man it just goes like that.
Quick question do some of the Dominicans ever give you a problem about rocking the hat etc since you aren’t Dominican? I ask because I’m from here like you and when I’m trying to “pick” which Spanish to learn I just don’t want it to come across as me trying to be something I’m not. Do they(Latinos) see it this way? For example, in the States when you have a white person who tries to sound ghetto or vice versa, and how that can be offensive to some. Are there any similarities with that in Latin culture or no?

Habla con un nativo, y dile que te corrija en lo fallas y tomas apuntes para ver donde esta debil
Solo es demasiado si te deja agotado y gastado por el esfuerzo. Si sigues disfrutandolo y teniendo la curiosidad no hay problema. Al menos lo creo así.
Ademas tienes que recordar que el tiempo entre principiante y intermedio es 1000% mas pequeño que intermedio al avanzado. Entonces lo mas probable estas mejorando aun si no te sientes que sí.
No es posible estudiar demasiado. Cuándo empecé, leía el diccionario en vez de leer mis novelas jaja. No te preocupes tanto por el tiempo. Solo estudia, y practica. Hay nivleles así que asegúrate de centrarte en lo que estás aprendiendo y domina eso primero y después avanza.

Hola, Im a Latina teenager who grew up with a Hispanic family. They never taught me anything. I grew up mostly around Salvadorans, Mexicans, and Belizean’s. I’m struggling to learn Spanish. I want to be able to talk to my family. Is there any tips you could give me?
@ allyson’s Journal Same here! I’m Latino and my family barely put in effort into helping me knowing Spanish. It’s even more embarrassing when you go to the mother land to visit family with them and you can’t really communicate because all you know is Hola, cómo está, y adiós, and they end up making fun of you for not knowing how to speak. I’m trying to learn and practice right now by myself but it’s going to take some time. Good luck!
Hola! YES! You have an advantage that many of us don't have. USE YOUR FAMILY as much as possible to help you. You have the best teachers around you and it's never too late. Put in the effort to study and demand that they only speak to you in Spanish. besides that, the advice is the same as everyone else.
@allyson's journal- If you're a teenager you have a lot of time to learn. You have all the time to learn perfect Spanish. Just start listening music in Spanish, there are a lot of classes here on CZcams, you can take courses. This football player from France learned Spanish in 2 years of living in Mexico, He speaks perfect Spanish. His name is Andre Pier Gicnac. By the time you become 20 you'll speak perfect Spanish. Just don't waste your time and be entertained in things that's not going to help you.

I have a few questions if you don’t mind answering them . 1) which specific grammar books did you use with which specific vocabulary books? 2) did you like use all your books together instead of 1 vocab and 1 grammar book together? 3) if so, when learning some grammar did you use the same vocab more than once for a different section?
