All of these stories resonated with me. I recently was ghosted by all my friends and some family. It all started going massively downhill with Trump election. One friend would always state - no religitics. Yet she came to camp out with a huge Trump/Pence sign in their camper window. When I expressed my dismay at how could they support this man, they fired back with take us off your list. Family did the same thing. I never felt so alone and torn. They told my children I was going to hell. My daughter was nine and her grandma told her this, to which I replied “ tell grandma *** that I’ll see her there. We were able to continue family ties but incredibly different and inauthentic. . Then, gradually they all started talking politics and praying in a circle over hotdogs.and we were forced to sit and listen to how he was given to us by god. They were sending me a message loud and clear. We pray before we eat! ( after 25 years of not praying before we eat). I was easy to get shun. I sometimes regret coming out. Until Trump we were able to co- exist mostly until this 2024 campaign began. Before Trump I couldn’t have told you how anybody voted, nor did I care. They are Christian nationalists and my attempts to tell them we do not want to be a theocracy resulted in my 2nd shunning. This time I am sure it is permanent. I’ve never seen anything like this. What is that line- divide and conquer. As a big camper for all my life, I have never seen political signs enveloping any campsite. Before 2020 election I stopped and asked one camper if they have always put political signs in their campsite. His reply was that no one has been worthy before. So I asked him what happens should he win, will you stop putting up political signs at your campsite? His reply was “ he’s going to win a third term. I followed up with what happens after this third term, to which he replied Jesus is coming back and all the Christians will be taken to heaven. I asked what happens to people who are not Christians. Eternal death in hell. I rode off in the sunset on my bike trying to enjoy the outdoors while I still could- you know I’m delivered to hell, or they kill me and my freedom to not be a Christian. There is no changing this persons mindset and they will feel justified in killing this infidel. I’ve gone silent, with no friends or family. It is heartbreaking to know that there is no fixing this. The pain this has caused is like loosing your entire world. I think I’ll just wear a big cross around my neck and put a Trump Won sign in my yard. Someone asked me once what I would do if someone came to me and said “ convert or die. My response was “. Pull the trigger, because I don’t want to live in that world.

When I bring up any of the many terrible things Trump has done, he gets angry and says that it is "fake news." It is like he is in a cult and brainwashed. Of course all he does is listen to Fox News. I honestly don't know if I will ever break Trump's grip on him.

I come from a Pentecostal Fundamentalist background. It took a long time for me to de-program, and I have been an atheist for 14 years now. Unfortunately, my whole family is still religious, and I have not spoken to them in years. It is really difficult because I want a relationship with them, but it always goes right back to religion...."You are going to hell and how could you do this to our family"...stuff like that. I wish they could get past it, but I can't control that. When I confront them, it never seems to come out right. I have zero issues speaking to anyone else about it, but family is always much more difficult.

I never did get the gibberish many there spouted and acted like that was even "speaking in tongues" which supposedly anyone hearing should be able to understand what that person is saying no matter what according to the bible(.at least get it right if you are going to make something the focal point of a religious doctrine.). If something is true , it will hold up to any amount of questioning by children or adults. Haven't run into any arguments by christians or other religions that actually make sense but hey maybe it's my faulty mind that can handle calculus but not loop de loop false logic that only believers who have been indoctrinated most of their lives can buy into. But then most of those people give their money and give up their personal power to these con leaders.. So follow the money and power as to why it keeps getting pushed on everyone. trying to force everyone to be on board for beliefs that aren't even good for them. if they actually look at what they believe without question.

I'm so happy to hear your story about Gracie! I know first hand the feeling of showing an animal a better life after a previous traumatic one. We had a sweet, wonderful cat who was 4yo when we got him. Whenever we reached toward him to pet him, he cowered like he expected us to hit him. We were (and are) convinced he was punished by his previous owners for peeing around their newborn baby's bed (territorial intrusion response, natural for a cat in those circumstances). That cowering went away over the first 2yrs, as he realized he was safe with us! He and we had 8 happy years together, and btw, he never peed in inappropriate places for us! I wish Gracie many happy years, too!

True, but there's actually a black atheist group on line. I simply don't tell black people I am, not for me but for them. I listen to all the church stories. Top me they are just stories about people being people, meaning self centered, selfish, jealous, the whole nine yards. I once had a black coworker show me a picture of someone she dated briefly and then whisper, he's an atheist, with a shudder. I just smiled.
People really believe this crap, so I find it a kindness. I let people pray over me at the hospital and will attend a church if invited. I've enjoyed a sermon or too. You don't have to be a believer to do so. Was once watching a talk show and this girl was in real distress over homosexuality.
My coworker, knowing me thought I'd mock the girl and I didn't. She looked at me so surprised. I responded, look at her, she really believes this stuff. She's in real distress. I feel sorry for her.
I'm a humanist. I don't particularly like people. I think we suck and ruining the earth, but I have empathy 🤷🏽‍♀️
Anyway, I'm an introvert and prefer animals to people. I know all of it was crap at the age of 7.
I get it - life is hard, death is scary, so many things we don't understand, and our daddies didn't love us enough, so believing in a sky daddy is comforting. But I'm an adult and thought like an adult even as a child. I just can't believe in nonsensical nonsense 🤷🏽‍♀️

I wish they had more interest in discussing it. The first book I bought was Losing Faith in Faith by Dan Barker, but I have a large library, since. Allow the obvious. You actually = were born an atheist. All humans are born lacking innate knowledge of "God" or religions. These things = must be taught to them - further evidence of their human origin. So you actually "broke your conditioning" at 40 to return to your "default" state as a human. Adherence to theism is as alluded to actually a conditioned behavior construct. Typically people starting as children are systematically inculcated into religious belief by the adults around them - who they instinctively trust. It is tantamount to Pavlovian conditioning. 🤨

Our civilization is reaching a nexus. Those who cling to theism increasingly find themselves unable to adapt to the inevitable - and inexorable - change which occurs with every culture over time. Consequently they are beginning to lash out at society agitating more and more for what could prove to be conflict. Unable to live in peace with others and clinging to their anachronistic dogmatic worldview they move towards what might be viewed as a modern form of the Crusades viewing all others as "infidels" as they desire to supplant the existing culture with their own.
Moral of the story: it is ironic in that people always feared nuclear weapons as destroying the world eventually when the real threat was always right in front of us........... 🤨

One of the oldest extant bibles is a manuscript written in Ancient Hebrew from the 5th or 6th century. The word that was used to describe the Hebrew slaves in Egypt was “Ebet.” When describing slavery in Exodus 21, Leviticus 25, etc., they used the same word, Ebet. So there is no doubt they were talking about slavery, not simply servitude or servants.

Seth, if any Christian actually says "spare the rod, spoil the child" to you, point out that they are not quoting the bible, but a very bawdy poem.
Proverbs 13:24 says "He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes." But "spare the rod and spoil the child" comes from Hudibras, a Samuel Butler poem that mocks Puritanism.
"The child," in this case, is Cupid, Eros, love itself! And that section of the poem is all about BDSM.

Reminds me of an episode of _Tales from the Crypt,_ where Uncle Ezra, the owner of a funeral home, thought that "a penny saved is a penny earned" came from the Bible.

I love hearing stories with great heartfelt, heartwarming moments without someone saying afterwards "Glory to God!", "Halelluer!", or "Praise Jesus!"
If you happen to even nod your head to someone who happens to close out situations like that. The next thing they try to do is witness, preach, or whatever to ya. I'm like "Get behind me Satan!" Lol😂

In addition to the monuments in DC, there's a bunch of free Smithsonian Museums and the Zoo there. You can also tour the Capitol, and of course there is Arlington National Cemetery bordering DC.

And it won't be super chilly in October. A sweater, light jacket, or hoodie should be enough for morning and evening, and it warms up pretty well during the day.

My parents are in their 70’s and they are in the place where they won’t change thier mind on god.
My mom is emotional my dad is a one way thinker, his way or no way.

A daughter who thinks violence is ok is a sad thing over a challenge to her belief. Kind of proves she is wavering deep down inside. You need to press charges though because that's not acceptable behavior no matter who it is.

Actually you were born "an atheist" - since no human is born with innate knowledge of "God" and religions. Those things = must be taught to you. Thus atheism is actually the default for man. Hence you mean to say you rejected your conditioned beliefs which were likely foisted upon you by your parents as is usually the case - just as religion was pushed onto them by your grandparents. The perpetuation of theism is a pure Pavlovian conditioning paradigm - typically beginning at an early age.
