  • In the history of the automotive world, Cadillac has always been different and known to bring extraordinary stuff. As a luxury automaker and a trendsetter, it always delivered some “first-ever’s” on the market. Cadillac was the first one to introduce a mass-produced V8 and then the first OHV V8, both setting new standards. The reputation as the “Standard of the World” had been received for a reason.

    I just love the low rpm torque of big American V8s. Especially the big blocks. You don't need to rev high when you can pull a stump out of the ground going uphill. In 3rd gear

      The limitation on stump pulling isn’t torque… it’s grip.
      The pony motor on a D2 Caterpillar will probably pull a stump out.

    My parents had a 1976 Cadillac Eldorado with the 500 V8 in it, and it was bulletproof as far as powetrain. My grandparents drove Lincolns exclusively and the 460 was smooth, quiet and powerful as well. For my money, the best of the GM big blocks was the Pontiac 455. Overall, the Chrysler 440 was probably the hardest to beat. Ford's 460 definitely held its own well.

      ah, you know what you are talking about. and the old 440 chryslers had a bad factory cylinder head design. aftermarket cylinder head added gobs of power.

    The Cadillac 472/500 cu in engine displacement was reduced to 425 cu in in 1977, displacement was reduced again in 1980 to 368 cu in. These smaller displacement engines were of the same engine family as the original 472. The last real big block Cadillac was the 1984 Fleetwood Limousin with 368 cu in engine...

      You're absolutely correct, especially about the commercial chassis lasting 3 years longer than the passenger cars. Unfortunately, by 1977 they were all gutless wonders due to the emissions controls, camshafts and tall axle ratios... I wish I could have driven an '84 limo to see if they came up with a better EGR valve & software for the mechanically robust V8-6-4.

    All the people saying it could make XYZ power but heads suck etc... they were made to have huge torque at very low (1500-3000) rpm. To make them "fast" defeats the purpose. I much prefer one of these beasts than any new whiny turbo engine. It's basically a truck engine in a very big car, awesome!

    My mom had a Bimini beige '77 Coupe de Ville with the 7.0 liter/425 cubic inch version of this engine. It couldn't get out of it's own way with only 180 hp on tap!
    By the way "Bimini beige" looks pink in bright sunlight; I used to hide behind the C pillar when I rode in that car so that none of the other kids would see me in it...

      Smog choked them out…..add some compression and remove all the smog equipment im sure that same motor will make 400+ hp with 10.5:1 compression minimum

      @@trentdawg2832 400+ gross horsepower, yes. You have to understand that what Cadillac was aiming for with this engine was...
      1. Bragging rights: You have the biggest engine in the neighborhood, and...
      2. Something that approximates an electric motor. Very smooth and lots of instant torque. It is rare for a traditional Cadillac engine to rev above 3500 rpm.
      I laugh when I see old Cadillacs with growling V8 exhausts; Cadillacs were SILENT. You weren't supposed to know it was even running. It just oozed down the road, kind of like a boat moving down a canal.
      Modifying one of these for performance gets VERY expensive very quick, if you can even find an aftermarket part.

    The Cadillac "Big Block " continued until 1984 in commercial and factory limosine service. The engine was reduced to 6L in 1980.

    A 1975 Eldorado convertible 500 cui was the first Cadillac I ever rode in, unforgettable sound & comfort ... the front seats swiveled a bit sideways to make rear entry easier

    At my engine shop, we did a lot of conversions of GM pickups and Suburbans from the 6.2 diesel to the 500-inch Cadillac engine.

      I’ll take the slug 6.2, my 85 suburban could barely do 70 and it took an afternoon to get there, but it got high teens low 20’s mpg. And it was a luxury barge, jet black paint and every option you could pay for, dual alternators, front and rear AC that got ice cold, I didn’t need to be in a hurry because the seats were softer than grandma’s couch. 😂

    If memory serves, I believe it was Cadillac who first used the pedal layout we all know now, with the clutch on the left, brake in the middle, and throttle on the right. Before that, pedals were like switches - in whatever order manufacturers decided to position them (a common layout before this was to have the throttle in the middle and the brake on the right.) Not sure exactly why other manufacturers copied this layout, but it soon became ubiquitous.

      @@captain1334 WHAT? No. You cannot build a Cadillac V8 to the same cubic inch or power as the Big Block Chevy for the same price. There are NO aftermarket blocks for the Cadillac. So other than a 0.060" over bore or 0.100" on an excellent block and maybe a custom crank your are not getting many more cubes out of the old Cadillac. You can easily make a 502 Chevy for cheap with a junkyard block. Or you can start with an 8100 (496ci) and throw a cam at it and make more power than a 1970 500ci Cadillac. It will also last longer and rev higher thanks to the far superior oiling system of the Big Block.
      Don't get me wrong though. I would much rather see Old Cadillac modified to make big power under the hood of a classic rather than a Big Block. But the reason Big Blocks and Small Blocks (LS/LT included) are so popular is because they are cheap, plentiful and well supported.

    The engine family featured here was sold well into the 1980s albeit with far less displacement. The 8-6-4 engine was a big block and a sad ending to a once mighty piece of automotive history

    Most reliable airboat engine is the 472\500, built 4 and once together,I have never had a mechanical problem. Direct drive the propeller, change the intake to an aluminum edelbrock , shorty headers. Side note. The 472\500 caddy is 50-75 lbs lighter than a Chevrolet 454, 100lbs lighter than a Ford 460 or Chrysler Corp 440..

    I like the heavy full sized car's. That's how an American car should be. But as time goes on styles change and it's easier to just add a supercharger or turbo in a smaller platform. GM did bring that engine back in the 3/4 & 1 ton trucks for people that need towing capacity, but didn't want a diesel engine.

    The huge caddy engines are awesome. They showed a glass of water sitting on the air cleaner. I had a 76 Oldsmobile Toronado with a 455 V8 in it that was smoother than the caddy engine. I did this test on my Olds and the water didn’t even ripple. My brother who was a long time mechanic said that was absolutely THE smoothest running engine he’d ever seen. He was a mechanic since the early 80s and he said this in the late 90s when I owned the Toronado.

    The 1960s and early 1970s was a different era long before fuel economy requirements. That was the time when an automobile manufacturer wanted more power and torque, they did not do 4 valves a cylinder and no overhead cams and no turbochargers or superchargers. Instead for more power and torque automobile manufacturers such as Cadillac used a huge displacement, gasoline thirsty V8 engine. And this V8 engine powered a large, heavy, land yacht car that gave a quiet, smooth and comfortable ride. Those days are long gone.

    Thanks again for your bringing back these memories of old and days passed. I will say that you hit the nail on the head with this one and I know that there is a V12 in a private collection of a Cadillac running prototype but it will never see the light of day unfortunately. I have worked and rode and a friend of mine ended up with a Elderado and the way it run was just like the video. Off the line up to 3800 RPM nothing else touched it once at the second gear 3000 mark the other faster revving car would pull away. I have found a 1970 Coupe DeVille with 39k on the clock original car, I am going to make the trip of 2.6 hrs to go see it 472 as you stated I hopefully can obtain it at the right price. Only rust is on the skirts edges around the inserts on the back quarters. Otherwise just a little bit of rust where the vinyl was . I will let you know what and how this goes.       Same here. I’ve had several 69-70 Coupe Deville 500s over the years before the values started going up. A lot of people don’t understand how powerful the early 500ci equipped cars are. Especially in the lighter Coupe Deville and Eldorado models. They definitely make low end torque, but they could also outrun a lot of muscle cars on the interstate back in their time. Its one of those cars that just keeps going once you get on it. Only thing to me that ever compared was the ‘69 Mercedes 300sel my mother owned when I was a kid. It had the big 6.3 fuel injected V8. I only ever rode in it but it felt similar in a lot of ways.

    I had a '70 Sedan DeVille with the 472 in it. It had an exhaust leak from a broken exhaust manifold bolt. Bought it for $500 cash and flipped it for $4000! Wish I kept it. 😥

    By american standards , the 472/500 cu inch Cadillac engine block , is a compact design externally. The design is much closer to being a small block in it's dimensional size , rather than a true big block, when measured next to any of it's contemporaries, i. e Lincoln 462, the Ford 385 series , or Chrysler 413/ 440 RB. Even the second generation AMC V8 , although a medium sized block , is in there. The really big (!) block's physically by sheer visual presence, would be the Mopar Hemi's and the 429 FoMoCo BOSS , thanks to their wide head assembly. By far the LARGEST engine block I've seen in any automobile, would be the Lincoln 430 , of the late 50's. It's just HUGE.

    I got '99 gm L18 old big block with modern heads , fuel injection.i put some aluminum heads and camshaft makes over 600hp and 800 lbs of torque on 95 octane

      Impressive; but where do you find 95 octane gas? I know in some states the have 93 at the pump. In CA we only have 91 octane.

    The Ford 351 Cleveland was the last big block developed (As far as "new" block designs). Largest displacement engine was the 510ci Chevy BB but it was only available as a crate engine.
    I think the Viper V10 was the first return of a "Big block" (Outside of truck applications) by any US mfg.

      The ford 7.3 Godzilla gas motor is the newest big block in decades, true old school pushrod design and 425hp. So glad to see a ford big block again with pushrods.

      Also. The viper was still based on the Chrysler LA series small block v8s from the 60’s that were in turn based on the heavier A series of the 50’s.

      The Cleveland 400m/351c was a medium size block, much like the FE series engines.

      @@_..-.._..-.._ If there was such a thing as a "Medium block" I would agree with you because the FE was very small for a big block (Physically not much larger than a SBC). The Cadillac 472 came out in '68 which was the same year as the 385 series ford block (429) so if anything the caddy engine was a tie for the last BB.
      Although I would think cylinder spacing and deck height would determine whether an engine is deemed a small or big block I've never seen any specific criteria published by an automotive society to reference to.

    I have put manually controlled 4-6-8 valve control gear on 500s a couple times. Throw a switch and it deactivates half the cylinders and then it only uses one half the carburetor. No computer at all. Just a toggle switch. Do you want to run on 4 cylinders or 8? Fine - select whichever you want !

      @@geoffmooregm Yes. I never had a back fire or pop, hesitation or anything. Realize that it was an enthusiast's engine, though. Absolutely tight rings valves head gaskets. Standard HEI distributor in flawless operating condition. Spark plugs new clean and gapped .060." NOS Quadrajet for 1970 Elorado. PCV valve only, no charcoal can, no delayed spark or converters, AIR pump or reactors. The TH425 automatic (reverse rotation for Eldorado driveline) had been rebuilt for higher shift points firmer shifts and the entire ensemble installed in an unassuming '66 Corvair. I was tempted a couple times to link the "4-8" switch to the throttle but decided against it. I feel it should be operated as an 8 full time and only switched it to 4 on the highway. I didn't want to mess up my shift points, how much vacuum the power brakes wanted etc etc etc. Couple times I pulled the trans into manual low and put it in 4-mode and creeped along in traffic jams. Seemed to run cooler and had adequate power for that.

      @@geoffmooregm Yes realize the intake manifolding of all ordinary classical V8 engines was "middle two cylinders on one bank plus outer two on other bank" connected up to one throat of a two barrel carburetor (or to one primary + one secondary barrel of a 4 barrel). So no airflow through left side of carb? No fuel gets pulled out those barrels.
      The distributor doesn't care that every other spark plug is dry and not lighting anything.
      Caddy's system fell down because it was paired with immature computer technology. Would have worked great on pre-smog engines. But gas was so cheap then that nobody wanted to buy a more expensive big engine to save some fuel.
      They just bought smaller engines - usually in smaller cars.
      Also - disconnecting the valves from the camshaft is easy with ("pushrod") Over Head Valve engines. It's pretty hard with Over Head Cam engines. And since gas got expensive nearly every thing is Over Head Cam now.
      Just in case you are interested I am thinking about how easy/hard it would be to adapt to Buick and Olds V8s. Looks easy !
      With some work I think it can be done to Pontiac V8s as well. MAYBE to a small block Chevy. It definitely can NOT be done to a big block chevy or chrysler Hemi.

      He’s speaking figuratively. The 500 was the end of the big block era of going bigger and more powerful. None of those other engines are over 500ci. The modern usage of big blocks was relegated to trucks and heavy duty fleet vehicles. Neither GM, Ford, or Mopar have offered a passenger car with a big block since the 70s. No manufacturer since Cadillac has offered anything larger than 500ci in production car, and never will for obvious reasons. That’s what he means by this being “the end of the old big blocks”. Just like the early 70s was the end of the muscle car. There have been later vehicles that you could call a muscle car, and there’s been a revival of big horsepower cars from manufacturers that attract a niche market, but the muscle car era itself ended decades ago.

    What about the 454 that was made well into the 90’s? It was a truck engine but that was considered big block. Also the vortec 8100 was its successor

      He means in a car sense, the end of an era of bigger and better cars with gigantic engines. The Ford 7.3 gas is indeed what I would call a big block, it’s a little bigger than a FE series motor, it smaller than a 385 series like a 460. Great motor btw, I drove one in a utility bed f350 and it was awesome, growled so nice and the power off the line was insane.

    Cadillac was not the first major automaker to offer an overhead valve V8. Chevrolet was first, with the 1917 Model D. Also, Ford was the first to offer a V8 with the block cast in a single piece, in 1932. Neat video, though.

    Umm in the custom engine building world they have already taken Cadillac 500 blocks, slapped ls9 heads onto them and have put down well over 1200 hp, 1500 foot pounds of torque. Back in the late '60s early 70s drag racers used to take these Cadillac 500s, drop them between the rails of an old model A or model T, port the heads out by hand or swap them for some Ford big block heads and they were running the quarter mile around the 11 second mark

    Chevy was the only company to use big/small block designations for their motors. everyone else just used CI. even tho most of the car community uses those terms. technicaly big block/ small block only applys to chevy engines

    i had a 1974 eldorado ragtop that i used to tow a 24' big block 454 baha boat with. the caddy was rated at something stupid ,like 180 hp. but i never felt the boat on the back when i was towing it, at low and high speeds. and it pulled boats up ramps with ease. i thing they were underrating these motors. and by the way, they were actually 501 cu. in. not 500.

    It was Ford which introduced the first mass-produced V8, the flathead (44 HP) in the early 30s. Mass production does not apply to unaffordable and low run luxury cars.

      Mass-produced is Mass-produced. Yes Ford produced WAY more V8 than Caddy or Olds V8, but that doesn't make them the first. Caddy & Olds DID mass-produce cars with V8 engines before Ford, just not as many.

      Not really. The Coupe Deville 500s would fly. My grandfather had one. It held its own at stop lights. From a roll on the interstate it would walk away from a lot of cars.

    Big Block equals big mass / weight . More power in a smaller engine is wisest . We went to V6 and now I4 dominate power and economy . Less parts consume less energy.

      also at the cost of reliability and drivability. A 300hp turbo 4 cylinder you're gonna be waiting for turbo spoolup for the torque to kick in, 300hp big block you have that power already on tap from idle. It's all a compromise

      They have turbo inline 4’s with 300hp that last 200,000 miles with 30mpg. What more do you want? Yes they don’t sound great, but they’re quiet and torquey off the line, turbo cars aren’t what they used to be, they have boost immediately now and plenty of top-end. Too many people miss the shitty old gas guzzlers. I love random and exciting engines too, but for practicality, you can not beat modern engines.
