Petting an "aggressive" tarantula (Acanthoscurria geniculata)

  • DISCLAIMER: This clip should demonstrate that this species is capable of learning that there are things in the world that move or/and live and are still not Acanthoscurria geniculata food. Too often, these gentle giants are just misunderstood and their enormous appetite is confused with aggression. If you try this on a "normal" Genic, I can almost guarantee you will get (mistaken for food and) seriously bitten!

      Since his 1st molt, so we DO know each other very well. :) Especially when he is freshly molted and/or hungry, he does give me threat poses when I approach him in a way that he doesn't recognize me. But as soon as he knows it's me, he is completely relaxed (towards the end you can see that the hairs on his abdomen are totally flat, at the slightest excitement they would stand up).

      Hi, they are a little too small for being petted like that, but as you can see in my other videos, my OBT's are just as tame, can be handled, hand-fed and live free-roaming. And they can be touched on their carapax, too. In an old video of mine I brush mites off an OBT sling's carapax with a cotton swab: m.czcams.com/video/c3S4ngcBm1k/video.html

    • @mikethespider8828
      @mikethespider8828  Před 2 lety +17

      On their abdomen: Clearly yes, depending on how "tame" they are. At least it's probably unpleasant for them. Every once in a while I still touch their abdomen, just so that they are used to it and don't panic in case of an emergency (molting problem, injury...), certainly not for a longer period of time like in this video.
      But on their carapax like in this video: For a "tame" spider like Hansiburli it seems to be neutral or maybe even pleasant! He can't clean himself on this spot, and for most animals, petting these spots feels pleasant. He doesn't show any signs of stress and is very relaxed (an A. geniculata does know perfectly how to defend themselves ;) ), so I don't think that he feels any discomfort, rather the opposite.
