      Given they were calling a vacation home they'd only owned for a couple of months, sentimental. I am pretty sure there is more to the story that the OP is not sharing, ie a recently deceased grandparent of the OP's at the time the OP was in his last year of highschool who had previously owned the house. There is definitely some information missing, as there are lots of little details that explanations could change my opinion on, especially as it feels the OP is intentionally leaving the information out, suggesting they believe that given the whole story fewer people would be on their side.
      Either ways, the parents should have communicated with their child long before they did about what was going on, and let him know there was no longer a college fund. They also should not have shared the information with him on his birthday. They are idiots for both of those things, but I'm personally withholding judgment on whether the parents were being hypocritical because I'm 98% sure the OP has intentionally left out important information.

    People in the comments aren’t understanding why he’s upset. He upset because they didn’t tell him in advance that they wouldn’t pay for his college. When you tell someone you’re going to pay for someone’s college for their whole life, you should really tell them a good few months in advance so they can prepare properly, that’s where OP’s parents messed up. I feel this kne. My mom swore to me if i stayed at home, she'd pay for ny college. So i stayed, worked part time, and attended college....for two semesters. Then she abruptly cut off paying for my school because "its too expensive" when i applied for school loans, i was denied, because ny mom aimed me on her yaxes, despite me paying for rent and my own bills. She screwed me iver entirely, and didn't care when i confronted her.

    I would 100% not want those parents around my kids.
    They started by lying to OP about the fund they saved, yes it's a lie cause it was used for something they completely didn't need.
    Then they got angry at him for being upset they screwed him over by both not paying cause they didn't want to give up their luxury they have using money they promised him and left him in the wind by not letting him know in any sort of timely manner leaving him with very few choices.
    They then leave all contact up to OP for 10 years blaming him solely for it, only to inform him his mother has been diagnosed with a condition he might also have years later and still holding him solely responsible for everything.
    OP had to put in 80% of the work to make it happen, that is a horrible thing to subject your children to.

    They couldn't afford to help their only child with college despite both having jobs but they can afford to splurge on themselves? Make that make sense. They should have told op sooner so he could have gotten time to work hard and get scholarships or a part time job. They suck for blindsiding op like that on the day he turned 18. The hypocrisy of claiming op only cares about when they sacrificed their son's education money to keep up their lifestyle lol. Ngl I fully expected op's parents to contact their son for money. That's usually how these stories turn out.

    I stumbled upon this reddit videos recently and I enjoy them from time to time, but I don't understand something.
    I am from Europe, Albania in particular, and I will never understand why there are so many people in USA that lack empathy towards their parents, siblings and relatives. (I know USA is a huge country with 300M inhabitants and there are black sheep everywhere btw)
    It's like you don't even understand the struggle and most of you don't value relationships. 90% of people can't even think of paying college and buying a vacation home in this world. The family could have done both and still they managed to somehow choose the worst path possible. Bothe the parents for lying to their son, prioritizing a house instead of their offspring (I am pretty sure they could have bought the house 5 years later) and the son for totally not caring about his parent for 10 years (I understand his feelings, I also wanted to leave my parents damn even when I was 15,16 but not talking to them for 10 years? Just invite them to the wedding and if their refuse it's their problem, you acted as a good son.)

    Unpopular opinion: they only called u cuz ur mom was dying. If she was healthy they would have continued on pretending u didn't exist for the next few decades. Let them go reconnect with their vacation house in cabo. It was clearly more important to them than their only child's education and future.

  • @sarahbaker1176
    @sarahbaker1176 Před měsícem +1

    The parents knew what they were doing. Who the heck waits until someones birthday to give them bad news. They'd had the information for months. The could have told him months earlier, or even the day after, earlier obviously better.There is however some information obviously missing from the story.
    In example, I do wonder if there was ever actually a college fund, or if both parents were in the middle of a midlife crisis when their son was 18, because its abnormal for people who have the forethought to create and maintain a college fund for almost two decades, to think it reasonable to spend the whole thing a few months before it would be used on non essentials. Otherwise, was there some type of argument or family tragedy that explains it (one potential example being it was a recently, at the time, deceased grandparents vacation / home that had left it to multiple children, one wanting to sell and OP's parents wanting to keep it so buying out their siblings share, which would explain why the parents described something that they had owned for a very brief period of time as sentimental.)
    This is one I would be interested in the parents side of the story, but the OP is not the AH for being upset with his parents choosing not to communicate properly. They may have been for other things, depending on the full backstory, and I would guess there is an element of it from what's not been said.

    I don‘t know how I came to that thought but if you really think about it. The reason that problem came into being is the supidly exspensive education. I mean why should it be that expensive to be educated? In my country College or what it is called is almost free. Except a few hundred bucks per semester for some things. But we also habe „expensive“ ones but they are all still affordable in comparison to like US collage. I mean up to a good yearly salary in my country per year for collage? why the f?
