Since first visiting Russia in 1982, John P. (Pat) Willerton's professional life has been focused on understanding Russian politics and the Russian society. An associate professor of Political Science in the School of Government and Public Policy at the University of Arizona, Tucson, he is a popular and award-winning teacher as well as the author of a book and roughly fifty articles and chapters on Russian politics. The first American to conduct a live, across-the Soviet Union, call-in radio discussion (Radio Youth) during the Gorbachev reform period, he is a frequent traveler to Russia.
Willerton never experienced Russia as an "evil empire," even granting the challenges of living and working in the authoritarian Soviet political setting. Energized all of his life by Russia's complex history, rich culture, and intriguing politics, he has a passion for breaking down political-cultural divides and making Russia and its people accessible to those who live outside its borders. He has engaged individuals and audiences on 'matters Russian' throughout the U.S. and in more than two dozen countries. Pat Willerton's "glass half full" assessment of Russia's 21st century political and socioeconomic prospects leaves him even more enthusiastic about sharing his experience and ideas with others.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Good luck in learning Russian, it is a quite difficult language, I don't know, but some people say that. The grammar ressembles Latin a little bit, but it's possible , I guess. If you will try to read Russian litterature ( I don't like it, because a bit depressive) I will advise "Master and Marguerite" by Bulgakov, Prishvin was writing about nature and beauty of the nature, his books are very warm, Lemontov and Pushkin were writing good novels.Good luck once again .

@@mrishka5 , фильм - это из другой оперы и отражает лишь сюжет, вся красота произведения в тексте и воображении читающего. Именно чтение развивает воображение, ведь один и тот же момент каждый увидит по своему. Поэтому то и отличается координально любая экранизация любого произведения, если её снимают разные люди, а особенно разные менталитеты.

I found this talk inspiring. A few years ago I started listening to Russian rock and roll and I immediately fell in love with the beauty of the poetry, which I feel reveals a part of the vast Russian soul. I came to the same conclusion: when I touched it, it touched me. I have made a few friends there, and they are the warmest, kindest people. The language is definitely the hardest to learn of the languages I speak. Я делаю небольшой прогресс каждый день. So thank you Dr. Willerton for this talk.
Great start, literature is the most important subject in our education and musicians use that experience to write their songs, so almost every R'n'R (or Rap) composition has the "author's message" in their lyrics based from literature exp.

I grew up in Russia, I lived there for 20 years. Yes, in old fashioned Russian language you would say to a person that you love , for example " My soul, how are you? " Душа моя, как ты? If the person is bad, we we will say, "you don't have a soul" (у тебя нет души). He is absolutely right about Russian soul. Love his speech!!!!
Toska - Russian word roughly translated as sadness, melancholia, lugubriousness.
"No single word in English renders all the shades of toska. At its deepest and most painful, it is a sensation of great spiritual anguish, often without any specific cause. At less morbid levels it is a dull ache of the soul, a longing with nothing to long for, a sick pining, a vague restlessness, mental throes, yearning. In particular cases it may be the desire for somebody of something specific, nostalgia, love-sickness. At the lowest level it grades into ennui, boredom.”

@@s1nister No, 'toska' is not a depression. There are 'депрессия' (depression) and 'тоска' in Russian that are not the same and cannot be used equally. One could use 'depression' as a translation for 'toska' in a certain text depending on the context. However, it's not going to be the exact and full transfer of the ideas that 'toska' contains. At least not with one word. Just like one cannot translate 'complacency' to Russian.

Тоже одно из любимых, и для меня самое значимое. Очень часто хочется что-то сказать, выразить мысль, или, особенно, если нужно кого-то морально поддержать, и в уме вроде бы созрела мысль, но представляю, что если я это выскажу, произнёсу, то это будет звучать как-то не так, как в душе, а как-то банально, или даже пафосно. И всегда вспоминаю строку "мысль изреченная - есть ложь"

Exactly. To my mind, Jack London is the best writer between foreign writers, and his style of writing I find so close to style of Tolstoy
Also we like science fiction: Ray Bradbury, Robert Heinlein, Roger Zelazny (not very science, still awesome fiction), Frank Herbert (so much more than just Dune!), Clifford Simak (can break your brain), Ursula Le Guin (strange and charming), Harry Harrison (good thing to kill some evenings, deathworld was continued by russians), Isaac Asimov (was born in Russia), Andre Norton (also strange and charming).
P.S. Not only Jack London, there is James Oliver Curwood and James Fenimore Cooper - favourite foreign writers of my childhood.
P.P.S. Many Russians just like to read books, even now.

Well, I have just realized how weird it was for me as for a russian to watch american people speaking about my country. But, on the second thought, it seems so meaningful. Dr. Willerton: Thank you for causing this lecture to be posted. It is relevant now, as it was when delivered. I think and feel much the same. We, as a country, have missed the wonderful opportunities available to us by partnering with our Russian neighbors. Unfortunately, the vast majority of United States citizens believe the self-serving propaganda of United States politicians and fail to avail themselves of the wonderful, rich and expansive experiences and opportunities we would know by improved relations with the citizens and government of Russia.

You are absolutely right. Even today, anti-Russian propaganda flourishes. In the Second World War we lost 27 million people, this is the very "suffering" that this professor is talking about. Every resident of Russia listened to the stories of grandparents about the atrocities that the Nazis committed on our territory.
And so, the United States arranges a coup in Ukraine in 2014, and people who support Ukrainian nationalism come to power. They put up monuments to those who destroyed the Soviet people and worked for the Nazis (Bandera, Shukhevych, Stetsko). Streets are named after them.
However, the south-east of Ukraine did not accept the policy of glorifying fascist henchmen and decided to secede, since people in the Donbass are ardent opponents of fascism. For 8 years, the nationalist battalions of Ukraine bombed people in the Donbas who simply said "We have no place in the country with those who glorify fascist collaborators." And the whole world was silent calling them "separatists".
And when Russia's patience snapped and in pain, Russia went to defend them, she was now accused of invading. A Westerner is not burdened with those ideals and sufferings as a Russian person (let me remind you of 27 million killed) and therefore does not understand why Russia went to Ukraine to conduct a special operation to "demilitarize" and "denazify" Ukraine. Russia will never allow nationalism to flourish on its borders and glorify those who worked for the Nazis.
Today, the Ukrainian authorities released several thousand criminals from prisons and gave them weapons. But the TV will never tell about it. "Russians are bad" is the main message of the West for its Westerner!

I am not Russian, but from my toe till my head I feel I am Russian and proud to tell that.I have a russian blood. And I am proud to have russian blood. The professor is brave and I respect his speech how he delivered to audience. Soviet Union won the Second World War and saved so many nations from genocide.
Clearly a mistake, all these nations are now openly cheering their local SS divisions as heroes. Russia saved and rebuilt them and now they only make excuses to commit genocide.
